Mini Review Request

Heya :)

Im VERY curious about PotBS ive been waiting ages for a good pirate MMO to come out and this seems to be the best one atm.

I tend to play fantasy MMO's such as LOTRO and GW, but i am very tempted to get PotBS, so i was wandering if anyone could tell me what its like compared to the other MMO's and is it worth buying?

Cheers :)

Heh, this is the mmorpg.com forums. Don't you know that every game that ever launched is the worst MMO of all time?

The trick with PotBS is to not have a thin skin. If getting sunk will make you flip out, then it's not an ideal choice. You also need to be reasonably social as I can't imagine playing this game without joining a society. Finally, the smaller the faction you join, the more involved you can be in RvR - but you'll also lose more often.

Might as well wait a couple months, the are "promising" some fixes to a lot things that people like the least, and, by then the price might be down $10 for the box, at least. A lot of copies hanging around that have not sold.

If you like ganking and griefing then PotBS is for you. The devs not only condone it but encourage it.

If, on the other hand, you aren't a sociopath griefer then this is just another crappy station pass game.

Well, I played the game for the trial period plus 14 days for using a friends number and decided to quit. Here are my reasons:

    1. Although ship combat was actually interesting, I found that missions were way to hard for beginners. For example, several of the beginner missions were 6 ships against me. WTF? This happened more often than I care to count too. Now admittedly, I tend to be an idiot;however, many of the missions were just too damn hard to solo.

    2. Manual combat, especially combat after boarding, was absurd. You would get a lot of dumbfire crews fighting the other crew where it was almost impossible to determine who was who. They absolutely should have adopted Sid Meir's approach in Pirates where there is a duel with the opposing captain. That was both clean and fun.

    3. PVP isn't totally avoidable. There are about 90 or so ports. ONly about 4 are PVP free. Even if you don't flag yourself for PVP, you can go to a port and ,due to it suddenly being in contention, you can get caught in PVP. It really isn't totally avoidable as with other PVP game such as Eve.

    4. The tutorial for both game play and for the economy really can use improvement. Honestly, there is a strong learning curve to this game ,which has its pros and cons. Having a super good tutorial would have been really important. Sadly, the tutorial is horrible.

5.The game isn't that solo friendly: You REALLY need to join a society if you want to progress in the game.

    6. Lag was a real problem despite having a 2.4 ghz computer with 2 gigs of Ram and a very recently upgraded video card.

Overall, I really wanted something different from the usual dungeons and dragons, hack and slash type of game. This game is different. I will give it that. However, due to the problems that I have mentioned, I quit the game. It's too bad because I really, really wanted to like this game.

I am not going into details here but if you like GW and LOTRO chances are you will not like POTBS.

Just to give you an illustration - POTBS has no exploration whatsoever outside sailing your ship on the sea (no random encounters or anything like that) and entering small zoned cities. You cannot just go and explore Cuba for example, islands and land are nothing more then game's (in)visible walls.

There is no endgame except flawed RvR system, AI is horrible dumb, economy is borked and game still cotnains a number of bugs and glitches.

The only good thing is ship to ship combat however that becomes stale and boring quite quickly.

Game is also not friendly to casuals, PvErs, econ players, soloers.

Proceed at your own risk, I strongly suggest getting a trial version/buddy key before jumping in.
