First if you didn't look at screenshots to know what you were downloading to begin with you are what I like to call an Rtard. Second 15 minutes to immerse yourself in one of the last and only True sandbox style games is hardly enough to get a feel for it other then the training area. Most likely you didn't even get out of the training dungeon. In 15 minutes you didn't even get to see the role your skills and stats play out on your character, how pumping your jump skill to 300 will allow you to jump onto buildings, how you can't hit that Lugian at all untill your attack skill hits 120. Or how just looking at the map you can decide, "Hey I want to see what those dots are?" and you go for a 3 hour run. Overall 15 minutes was never enough to get a feel for AC, take some advice try it out for a week of play time, unless your someone that needs each quest handed to you with a gold ring, or gold exclamation point. If that is the case go back to LOTRO or WOW, and play a very limited game. The rest of us will continue to love a game that was far far ahead of its time, and hope that the devs finally figure out that remaking it would be benificial for the entire MMO community.

ok so 15 minutes was dramatic i played more for like 5 hours . most of which was trying to find the npc the game told me i should go see after geting out of the training. the concept of the game is good dont get me wrong. but so much wrong with the game its not even funny. graphics and the ui could use a major ove haul. mobs shouldnt be 2 hit wonders and should be closer together. and be worth more xp. i tryed LOTR's online too much quests involved. WoW is ok quests could be more fullfilling. atleast in wow and eq you dont have to depend on quests to lvl. in lotro you have to do quests or you dont get anywhere. and in this you cant even find the first non tutorial quest without checking out every single hut which is a bit harsh.

What do you expect from a game back in 1999. AC1 is one of the greatest MMO's ever and im sorry you cant see that. Why dont you go back to your cookie cut WoW and emo yourself.
You should of read up on Asherons call first, its an older mmo and is nothing like current day mmos. -then maybe you would be less dissapointed if you knew what you were playing and what you werent-
Quests arent given from npcs with exclamation marks over their heads, nor are quests easily laid out to find =you would require a site like http://www.thejackcat.com/ to even begin with questing for some items or experiences in the game=
-Normally you would rely on the town criers, who would for a bit of pyreals give you some current information depending on the month (how patches work), youd get hints toward where the game is story wise/time wise. as well you could find things like parchments and other items that hint you toward a path to a quest, or visit a towns tavern for some information at a price.-
=Theres no journal either, and your progress towards anything is only what you know you've done=
-Asherons call is a game of exploration, theres no hand holding at all, once your out of the training dungeon its off to kill rabbits/drudges/wasps and anything else to level up and proceed
Your level is also nothing more than a testament to how much experience you have, and experience means nothing unless you use it to raise your skills.
===
In the end Asherons call is really a grinding/monster murdering game, but you can take ample amounts of monsters at one time given you have the skills/items and possibly buffs, and loot is plentiful and maybe the best part of the game -even at the low levels youll be switching equipment around like clockwork as you kill things either finding whats best in terms of dmg/armor or in terms of looks

I miss AC (*sadface*).
if u didint play it 10 years ago u wouldnt understand what AC is about. it sucks that AC sucks. but yes, they need to just end it!
Asheron's Call will always be in my memories!
I agree, making pre-ToD free to play is the only option for AC to survive. For some reason though Turbine doesn't want to do it.

lol emo myself. very funny any yeah it might have been made back in 1999 but everquest was made before that or around that time and was much better graphics wise mob placement was alot better etc etc so i stand by what i said they should just kill it
I could go on and on, page after page as to why Asheron's call (imo) is a far superior game than any of those that you mentioned thus far, but given your "held by the hand" impatient mentality, it would be a waste of my time. This is coming from someone who's played countless MMO's (my first being EQ) and critiquing every single aspect of each game. Everquest may have been my first, and although it was a very pretty and impressive game, it has nothing on AC - not by a long shot. Graphics don't mean anything if the game has no depth to it.
I'll just say this; if you can't see why AC has been and still is the most amazing, free-form and indepth MMO of all time, then I feel sorry for you.
It truly is sad that AC is just this to all the masses who decide to try it today.
Asheron's Call is definitely the best mmo ever produced. It wasn't my first. UO was. Then EQ. I guess the third was the charm for me. I have played UO, EQ, EQ 2, WoW, Eve, Dark Age of Camelot, Lineage, Lineage 2, D&D Online, Anarchy Online, COH, D&L, Fury, Guild Wars, Horizons, MapleStory, Saga of Ryzom, Star Wars Galaxies, Second Life, Vanguard, and about 100 other free mmos to date.
And easily, the best 3 ever in my opinion (in order of best to 3rd best) is 1) Asherons Call 2) Ultima Online (Pre-Trammel) and 3) Dark Age of Camelot
World of Warcraft would probably be a distant 4th, with EQ being a close 5th.
Asheron's Call has so much depth and lore to it, it was sooooo fun to explore, OMG. I miss the days of AC the first 3 to 4 years after it was released so much.
I could go on and on about this game.
But I have already promised myself that if I ever strike it rich in some lottery or and win like 200 million bucks, that one of the first things I will do is either pay Turbine to remake AC1 with an overhauled engine and new servers and rules preventing all the 3rd party cheats and applications. If Turbine won't remake it, or sell me the rights to remake it, then I'd just have to invent a whole new game with exactly the things that made AC so great with current day graphics, but yesteryears elements stolen from the pages of Asherons Call.
Might be fun to dream up some all new crazy monsters the world has never seen anyhow. Damn, I remember how crazy and exciting that was to see my first "Rust Gromie" back then and how much damage it did with it's breath and how determined I was to kill that damn thing out on those desert hills. I remember fighting so many of those crazy unique monsters back then and how damn much fun it was to explore a world full of monsters so different then the common dwarves, ettins, and trolls you'd see so much of in other games.
Perhaps if "AC: Reborn" was ever to come to life with todays graphics and a superb online engine, and the game was actually advertised and put onto store shelves like all the other Turbine games have had, then people would finally start to really understand WHY no mmo or game can really compare to good ol' Asherons Call and WHY it was so damn great back in its day.

If you win the lottery and create "Asheron's Call: Reborn," I'll be the first to sign up.
^ Amen to that ^_^

Zantax, you brought back memories of what was some of my very very best times in any mmo. I was also surprised to see in your profile that I actually work where you like. RD, AB. small world
Do you still play? I used to play on WintersEbb....*sigh*....those were some great times.
I played when the mana pools meant something and when they did not. When the subway was "THE SUBWAY" and the market place became the haven.
I miss that game.....maybe I will give it a try again.
(wish they would move mansions into town tho)
I have said this before... Asheron's Call, by not marketing itself, ruined MMORPGs for a decade or more to come. EverQuest is now the benchmark... the slot-car style characters, simplistic skills, forced skill trees, hand holding, the sequential quests, the little arrows lighting the way to your next free injection of XP...
Ewwww
Everyone falls all over themselves about how WoW is a revolutionary game, it isn't. It is an EQ Clone. The OP proves that snadbox games are dead for anyone that didn't start in Asheron's Call. The freedom, the openness, the ability to take risks balanced by the ability to make mistakes are beyond his understanding in games. He simply doesn't get it (and never will)
The little kiddies from EQ/WoW are brainwashed in to running from glowie to glowie. They become confused and frustrated if they have to do something on their own... heck, they likely are living in games because they are making that exact same mistake in their lives too.
I just left a game called Tabula Rasa... perhaps the most sequential-forced-slotcar-spoonfed MMO I have ever come across. If I was raised on EQ or WoW I wouldn't have noticed what was missing. Freedom.
PS - unfortunately, this desire for the spoon feeding and sense of protections from limited choices is why America is turning more and more toward Socialist Marxism. A large portion of our population is afraid of making choices on their own, and they are so jealous of others that they want to limit your choices as well. Freedom is a concept that is frightening to many people wether in a game or in an economy.
Asheron's Call is dead, but what it was at its time was so much more than has ever been seen in a game since.
"The reality of the poor in America isn't the difference between The Haves and The Have Nots, it is the difference between The Haves and The Have Lots."
