I've been playing for awhile now, but most of my characters are casters. I want to create a melee character and I like the idea of an assassin, but I would like more armor. Is it possible to create a warrior/assassin or paragon/assassin, but play him more like an assassin? If so, can anybody give me some hints as to how to do this effectively (especially energy management)? Thanks for any help.

PvE or PvP?
PvE
Sure you can, if you wish to trade critical strike for leadership. Also you might want to bring along a battery. Personally I never liked the idea of playing a paragon with anything but chants and spear or a W weapon, because of leadership. Assassins aren't great at shouts and you'd gimp your energy too much, prolly.
Anything is doable tho', but as a P/A you might want to bring along a battery. Same thing goes for W/A, while strength might be more useful than leadership if you do not plan on shouting.
Everything is possible ofc, but I'd strongly advise you not to. Not only would you manage to cripple your own effectiveness extremely much by not having critical strikes and not being able to have runes, but you would also be unable to play it at higher levels. If you want to play a Assassin then play one, and don't tank. If you play a Paragon you'll be asked to play as a Imbagon (which truly is imba) and if you play a warrior you'll be asked to play a more traditional one.
Most of all you won't be able to handle energy very well, due to lack of critical strikes, this will cripple you and make you unable to output equal damage should you've been a primary assassin. When you play an Assassin you shouldn't need armor due to you avoiding becoming the target.
To be honest...the armor bonus isn't really worth it. Remember, assassins were made the way they are for a reason. Sure, there are other professions out there that may own as secondary assassins, but I'd be very wary of creating a character that could get nerfed any time soon.
hey thanks for the advice, i think i'm just gonna play an assassin. any advice on assassin secondary's would be appreciated. see you in factions!
Assassins really do not need a secondary so anything you choose is fine really.
And that's why you read the stickies first, see here.
The build I use is an Assassin/Dervish ctitrical strikes build
Pick whatever 3 attacks you like the other 5 goes like this:
Way of the assassin (elite) - about +30% or so critical hit can be kept up permanently
Critical Defenses - 75% to block for about 9-10 seconds, renews every crit.
Critical Agility (sunspear rank PvE only) - 33% attackl rate and 25 armor, last 5 seconds renews on crit.
Mystic regeneration - +2-3 regen per enchantment
and fill in the last with whatever critical eye or another enchantment or an attack.
This gives you somewhere on the order of 66% crit rate + 33% attack rate. It gives you +6-9 regen and about 95 armor and 75% block. You will crit once a second at least so as long as you attack you will keep your armor and block rate up.
Its a crazy good build. You never run out of energy, incredibly hard to kill, and tons of damage. I had Zenmai tank Shiro with a variation that didn't have critical agility and she owned him. It destroys melee and even has decent degen resist.
OF course if you play asssassin it also a good idea to get used to using shadow step style builds as well.
Would just like to drop by and mention that for some reason this seems to be the most commonly made build - ever. A few of the weaknesses in this build is 1. In PvE it doesn't compare in damage or anything to any other sin build. 2. You got a overkill of critical strike chance, it works equally good without the elite and using Way of the Master. 3. If you're going to run this you need to switch around the skills a bit to utilize it truly. 4. It's mainly useful in PvP.
Okay you've come this far now please keep on reading before making a hasty reply saying I'm wrong. Compare the damage of a MS/DB spammer and this build and you will find that the MS/DB spammer deal more AoE damage as well as got a easy way to inflict Deep Wound.
Now this is getting slightly off topic considering he just asked for a decent secondary profession, and that I've tried to cover fairly well in my guide (which is stickied). However to finish off I would say that if you're going to run a sin in PvE then use some of these two builds, for PvE that is.
Should you feel like further going on with this debate I would suggest you to either post a new thread or send me a PM. The reason why I replied to this was just to clarify a few things regarding the build as well as try to show that this isn't exactly one of the best builds to run.
Nice.. those are some solid builds.. my sin' isn't far enough in nightfall to get shattering assult, but that build using Moebisu strike is great and that elite is an *easy* capture.. I know what I'll be doing tonight. ^_^
>_> <_< ^_^

Um there is no debate. Further going on with a debate would require two people. I simply posted a very survivable assassin build I like to do because its easy and extremely tough. The Moebius Strike/ Death blossom route is perfectly fine. There is a great monk version of that too:

I like having the high criticals with that build as I can be sure of things renewing even when I get a little blocked. Never said it was necesarry or optimized. But it should point him in the right direction.
Do whatever you like there are like 10 or more variations on it.
I agree lol. There's no point in starting out with the "best" build. The best way to learn is by making "mistakes."
However it tends to be a good idea to have a basic understanding of what makes the "best" build "best". Otherwise you will have a much steeper learning curve.
