First of all let me say that i love the Final Fantasy series and I can't wait to get this game today! I hear that you need a party to level and i love that. I have a few questions though
1.What is the most populated server/which server do you recommend?
2.Is there an actual storyline like in the Final Fantasy games?
3.Do i need to buy the wings of goddess expansion or can i just get the 2007 Vana'Diel package?
Thanks for the help and if anyone wants to help/play with me in game just post here or message me!

no i got the 07 package without wotg expansion and im fine. it will be good for u actually since your a new player so dont worry about getting that expanasion for now the 2007 collection will do just fine. and play on the server asura its noob friendly has a great community and has good pop for high and low lvl players.
Thank you man! Thank god that i dont need to dish out 50 bucks . Maybe I will meet you online sometime.
Yes there is a story line, there is one for each City, the main game, and each expansion. If you are looking for meaningful story, you picked the right place.
You will want to get WoTG if you stick with the game. No point getting it right now b/c you really wont need it until later lvls. (however 08' collection is coming out the 15th this month, including WoTG)
Some helpful links-
Get to know this website, it will help you out so much ^^ www.wiki.ffxiclopedia.org
and a good camp list and directions to find places to lvl up at: http://campsitarus.blogspot.com/
You might want to pick Windy as your starting city too, its the best one for new players imo. Easy to make money there.

Dangit Korvix stole all the good stuff. Welcome and enjoy is all I can say now I guess. Oh and another thing about the stories I find this to be my favorite because it has 7 storylines all together and they all seem to intertwine in one way or another. Ive only completed bastok, zilart, CoP, and ToAU. They were all great and I loved them. WoTG hasn't been completed yet but I'm current on that and it seems to be shaping up into a great storyline can't wait for more content on that guy.
Well anyways good luck and welcome to Vana'Diel.
Thanks guys. I hope that the community in game will be as nice as you. Oh and thanks for the links they are helping me alot!
Edit:I just got the game (I love the smell of a new game O.o) and I'm installing it now. I'll tell you what i think of it later... this might take a while
It will be a good bit....the install is not as bad as it used to be. They started updating the disks with a lot of the old patches already. So you should only have to patch any new data from the last time they updated the disks. Think it took me 3 hours to patch and install everything. Re-started a few weeks back so you are prolly looking at something in that time frame as well.
Oh people running around with (M) next to their name (will look like a gem with a M in it) are flaged as a mentor and they should be more than willing to help you out.
also if you are using a Keyboard, to use WASD, open the menu (i use middle mouse)> over (right arrow)> scroll down to Config> Enter> Keyboard>Enter>go down to Compact Keyboard and select that.
Also, make sure you configure the game before you go in. There will be a config tool under the start menu or in the directory you installed too.
3 Hours and 20 minutes to update... this is bull... i geuss im not gonna be able to play much today
Sorry for posting twice in a row but i have another question . Can someone explain to me what skill chaining is/how to do it? I've been searching for a good explanation but i can't find any. Thanks
Sorry for not answering your immediate question but Ive played the game for about 2 weeks now. Originally I was frustrated with the features but i quickly learned how to optimize the game to fit my playing styles. I offer this advice.
1. CHANGE THE GRAPHICS. Man those settings they start you out with are terribad. You can change the video settings by going to the final fantasy xi config.
2. GET A USB CONTROLLER. I was trying to use the numberpad the first day and it ended in such great disappointment and failure that I was ready to uninstall the game on the spot. I took the helpful advice from other forum members here and got a controller. The difference is night and day.
And....thats about it heh. The game is very different from ever mmo i have ever played. It feels much more like playing a classic final fantasy game with other people around rather then your classic mmorpg. Goodluck
You want to get to know that site very well ^^.
Thanks for all the help guys. That ffxi wiki website has helped me alot. So far the game is pretty confusing though . I haven't killed anything yet (I've played for 2 hours) and this guide says i should buy the level 1 equipment but i don't know how to get the money for that. Also, It's pretty hard to find out where all the missions/quests are.. when i look on that ffxi wiki site it says K-10 or something like that after a NPC name. I geuss those are the coordinates or something. I know when i look at the map it says a letter and then a number after it but I don't know which direction to go to get to the place i need.
I'm going to keep playing this game until i learn the ropes.. hopefully it won't be as confusing.
