I was thinking of which MMORPG game I should get. I was thinking along the lines of Everquest, Anarchy Online, or FFXI. I have never played a MMORPG before, and I was wondering which one you guys would suggest. I am also looking for one that is updated often with new quests and stuff.
Thanks

well seeing as it would be your FIRST MMORPG i would suggest either EQ or UO... they seem to be the popular choices for 1st MMORPG... but maybe thats just because they're 2 of the 1st big name North American MMORPG's...
well how about this... tell me what you want and dont want from an MMORPG...
how do you feel about PvP (player VS player)...
would you prefer a skill based (where the more you do something I.E. Fishing, the better you get at it) or a level based system (much like 99% of the single player RPG's out there I.E. Final Fantasy)...
are you all about pretty 3D graphics or could you deal with something less... pretty?...

and oldie but goody, AC1, monthly updates for quests, content, etc. Infact, one today!
Not the eye candy of those currently out however. So, if that is wht you want, tht would not be the game for you.
Truthfully, check out the links to games here on this site, get a feel for what they offer, then JUMP IN and have a great time, whichever one you go to!

hmm this is hard
Everquest....ehh, I wouldnt get that. Just too many reasons why. Anarchy Online is ok, but the same type of missions will drive ya nutz, and FFXI is ok but you want a game that is updated often with new quests. I dont think FFXI had ever been updated with newer quests since release in the U.S.
If I were u ..go play a sp RPG until some of the bigger mmorpgs come out in late quarter 2004

just make sure you pick a good one, because "this type of thing only happens for the 1st time once"...
i remember my 1st MMORPG ^^... Lineage: The Blood Pledge (a.k.a. Lineage 1)... those were the days ^^ never did i have so much fun in an MMORPG...

I would say DaoC only because it is more competitive.
Or wait for WoW in 6 months or however long it is coming out.
i know people are gonna hate me for this one but, if you REALLY enjoy PvP you might want to take a look at Lineage 2... its pretty much the new PvP'ers playground in the world of MMORPG's... its pretty much an open PvP system which allows killing another player anytime, anywhere, HOWEVER... PK'ing (player Killing) will give you "Karma" which allows other players to kill you free of penalty... you can duel other players all you want though without gaining karma...
overall its a pretty descent game... the only complaint i really have about it is the lack of customer service (the reason i quit)... great graphics, great music, fun PvP (which includes LARGE scale castle sieges and clan wars), raisable and ridable dragons... so ya... give it a look www.lineage2.com

well, most people will say AO is better mostly due to the fact that Lineage 2 relies alot on grinding (a.k.a. hunting monsters for hours on end to gain levels/money)... both Lineage 1 and Lineage 2 are the biggest games in the world due to Koreans (mostly) because they dont mind the grinding, however they didnt do quite as well in North America because most people here are used to skill based systems and casual leveling...
not to say Lineage 2 is not populated though, in fact its doing pretty damn well in North America... as for which one (L2 or AO) has the most players im not sure... (although i can try to find out and post back...)
Lineage 2 is really more for the hardcore levelers and such while AO seems to be slightly more for the casual gamer...
so really, what kind of gamer do you see yourself being?... casual or powerleveler?

do not play L2....just don't. lol worst lvl grind ever. the economy is the worst ive seen. and ive played almost all of them.
if it is your first mmo, make it something epic. EQ was my first and 7years later. still my favorite.
i mean play it if u really think it looks like fun. but dont say i didnt warn u.

DAMNIT!!!... i had just finished typing up a huge page on what i think the subscription count would be and now i gotta retype it all over again thanks to the crappy auto-log out >_<;;
ANYWAYS... i'll try this again...
OKAY, so i just checked out the subscription sources for Anarchy Online and Lineage 2 and heres what i got from it (remember this is all a COMPLETE guess so i could be off quite a bit here...)
okay so for Anarchy Online, last they reported back in late 03 was that they had just under 50,000 subscribers (around 40,000 i would say)... now now the question is what has happeend since then... well my guess would be anywhere between 30,000 to 50,000 today (with the free-trials and upcoming expansion)... remember, thats a complete guess...
now as for Lineage 2, NCSoft (the makers of Lineage 1, and Lineage 2) stated very rescently that they had sold 86,000 Lineage 2 boxes... so now the question is whats happened since... well in the time i as playing, the number of players leaving and players coming in was roughly the same so i cant really say to much about that... also Chronicle 1 has been released soooo... if i had to guess i would say anywhere between 50,000 to 80,000...
so ya... there you go...
[edit] btw, i couldnt tell you which game i think is personally better because i havnt played AO myself (although i personally know a few people who do)... i can however vouche that Lineage 2 isnt a bad game as long as you can deal with grinding... its bassically a love it or hate it type of game... if you can deal with a grind and love PvP you will probably love it, if you hate PvP and cant stand grinding then you will hate it...

You have no idea how the grinding is.
Lets just give you an example: The max level is 75. It took 2 koreans sharing the same account 24/52 (yes 24 hours for 52 days) just to get from level 70-75.

and there's more bad stuff about Lineage 2 than grinding....grinding is the best thing going for it lol

AO is a fun game, you can do missions to get xp or kill monsters. Its easy to get a group once you know where people are hanging out to lvl, which was in the shadowlands when I was playing. I would start in jobe research area.
Lineage2 was just way to hard to get levels for me and most people wanted to solo so groups were hard to come by. Money was hard to but got a little easier as you leveled. L2 has alot better graphics than AO. I was wanting to play a certain class like dark avenger but never got to because the lvling grind was to bad for me.
If you dont mind spending hours and hours to get a lvl and want pvp I would play L2.
If you want to group and lvling is easy I would pick AO. I didnt see much pvp when I was playing but I wasnt looking for it .

its in Korean but im pretty sure you get the idea ^^... you want huge teams ganging up on giant monsters?
just a little comparison...
apparently the Koreans beat him... crazy koreans

Ya, Lineage 2 would be the ticket, if it's pvp you're looking for. Just remember the 'karma' aspect: what goes around really does come back around to bite you in your arse! Definitely worth checking out, though, if pvp's your thing.
Anarchy Online is awesome! I'm currently playing both, & a couple others. Anarchy's got a cool pvp system, & you don't always have to be in pvp watchmode. The graphics, sounds, & ongoing player options will keep you busy. Anarchy's great at keeping current with what the players want~their Alien Invasion expansion is gonna rock! All that being said, keep in mind that Anarchy's got a steep learning curve. So it might not be cool for your 1st mmorpg. But worth keeping in mind, for after you get your mmorpg feet wet. Wherever you end up, always remember that if it's not the game for you, just move on. There's lots of great games to explore, so you won't have to 'settle'.
Good luck in your hunt!
Seeing as this is your first MMORPG, I would highly suggest against playing an open PvP game such as Lineage 2. It could possibly become irrative and drive you away from MMORPGs in general.
IMHO, I would suggest Anarchy Online as one of the best beginning games out there. It has a well rounded mix of PvE and PvP(arena style). The community is still very strong, and the game is easy enough to learn, but hard enough to make you feel accomplished. In general, it opens both solo and team-based gameplay, as well as raiding when you are level 150+. The grind is average, however the level cap is fairly high. I think this is good for a beginner, letting them feel as they are moving at all times. The last point worth mentioning is the very customizeable character progression, through the system of Leveling/Skillpoints tied together. Although, without some reading or common sense you could gimp yourself fairly easy.

IMHO stay wawy from Lineage 2 until the chinese bots are gone as well as the delicate "easy to hack" client
Anarchy online....or just dont buy any until later hehe

Well thanks for all of your suggestions. I went to gamestop and the guys there really suggested that I get FFXI. So I do so. They said pretty much all the things you guys have said about Lineage 2. And they say AO is getting old and showing its age. And there are many hackers on there. The only problem with FFXI though is that there is no PvP.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
EQ would be a great choice, but at this point and time, i would personally wait for EQ2. whats another 3months.
So as my original post said. FFXI is a good starter mmo. has alot of what other games have and much more. The biggest reason that it is my suggestion to u though is that it is an easy game to get into. very simple.

i would say go with AO its got alot of content and its easier then ever to start from scratch ive known plenty of peeps who got their start with ao, its a good building block to start with
