Blizzard's marketing is great and this was their way to hype the game...now it is the most wanted game of 2004.
Yes interesting idea...not discounting it just want proof. More than likely Blizzard needed to gather evidence and/OR give fair warning to these servers before shutting them down. You can't just rush in without build in a case. It does not mean they "allowed" the servers, just took time to get the lawsuit together. Blizzard does not need these servers for advertising of any sort I'm sure, the game is already huge without them.
Yeah it takes time to build cases and get things processed in court. Especially with this kind of thing considereing its online. They gotta do investigations to find out the who exacly the culprits are then deside what actions to take. They gave warnings...some were ignored... so they took action... and the end result we see is what happend with gotwow.net. Now the gotwow community is staying away from anything to do with the hacked servers for fear of legal action.
I highly doubt blizzard let the servers go like they have to "Hype" up the game... if anything it would deter people who dont know what the game is like from it cuz the hacked servers were shit. WoW is hyped up enough with out the hacked servers. No one needs them.
"look: Stormcraft Servers were a good and cheap advertisement for Blizzard"
That is incorrect. They were an advertisement for blizzard/WoW, but they were also misrepresenting the game without properly informing the idiots that what they were playing was in no way shape or form equal to what they would see on the real servers. If there was a huge, clear disclaimer stating that the servers were just proof of concept and were not properly demonstrating the game, then that might be considered ok. But no such thing was done. So the idiots would log in, find a completely incomplete world/game, and then get the wrong impression. I know that for a fact because ive dealt with many of these idiots. Ive spent countless hours trying to explain to them why there are no quests, why mobs dont attack you, why you dont have any skills/talents, why there is no loot etc etc on these damn servers.
I am not against stormcraft emulating the WoW servers. I am against them making no effort to educate those using their servers that what they are experiencing is NOT the game but instead just the engine and a partially functioning world.

you got all infos and the servers are down cause of new coding i don t think many ppl were such idiots like u discribed cause there were info pages like this: http://scupdates.stormcraft.nl/index.htm I visit these servers and IRC and i didn't like them but nobody was there who thought that it will be like that at release but i think they should stop now cause the beta will start now in europe, too.
so it is good that thea are down and they should stay down but i also thing that it was a good and cheap way to hype the game.
Um, you can't really stop people from trying to or succeeding in hacking or cracking a game. The more popular the game, the more people will want to break it. Everyone knows this. This is just a PR tactic for Blizzard to say "oh please don't hack us too fast"

Yes, but what can be hacked can be un-hacked...it doesnt change the fact what they did was wrong...and PR tactic...whatever....the whole industry, movies. radio, and entertainment industry are tired of losing customers...and yes money to hackers and such...if it's PR why hasn't Blizzard posted anything about it on their website to get more than a small part of their community involved in this...because its BAD PR to have hackers come after your game...it my be obvious to some that hackers are able to infiltrate you game...but why advertise...PR tactic...please...proof if you got it...

As a WoW irc channel operator ive had to deal with countless dozens of idiots who would after playing on those servers complain how much the game sucks because "there are no quests yet" and "why are there no aggro mobs" etc etc not realizing that the emulated servers were VERY partially emulating the real deal and werent by any stretch of the imagination complete. From my point of view the only thing the emulated servers have accomplished is given the wrong idea/information about the game to many idiots out there. -------------------------------------- Played: AC1, DAoC, E&B, SWG Tested: AC1, AC2, DAoC, Eve, Planetside, Rubies, Lineage 2, MU Online
You guys can complain as long as you like, your opinions dont effect me at all. And for you guys that bash me, I would like to see you do what we did ? you cant because you spend all your free time as forum trolls other then doing something productive.

Mess with the best, Burn like the rest..
Thats the dumbest thing Ive ever heard... and having a hacker community is something productive? God pull your head out of your ass and wake up. Theres no difference between someone who posts on a forum or a person who runs a forum. The person who runs the forums "Trolls" post to delete inapproprate posts. If youre talking about the hacked servers being productive thats more like misplacing ones energies into something illegal or stupid just like people go around breaking windows and having "Roman Candle" fights and video taping them for shits n giggles.
Go play with your shitty hacked servers no one wants them anymore seriously. Its over...you lost... deal with it...move on. *pats you on the head*

thats what i like on blizzard.. they can handle things like hackers...
unlike others...
Oh well, it was kind of fun to play on for a little bit. The grphons were cool to ride. Sucked only having one spell though.
It was good just to see the world see the mobs and get a little more familair with WoW.
