What is up with guild wars??

SylviusSylvius Member Posts: 8

At this moment there are 3 guild wars titles in the top rated MMO's.

I don't really understand what this game has more than any other? I understand the other titles in the list: Lotro is big, nice lore, nice graphics,... Even though i find it a bit high rated.

the same counts for Everquest II and EVE.

But guildwars??? Except that it is free, and on its own a good game, I don't understand why its so high rated. In my eyes its not even an mmo. So what is the main reason that peope seem to like it a lot???

Because it's f2p and has good PVP.

If you want some hard numbers, as of around October 07 it had 12.6% of the entire MMO market share, which accounted to around 4.5 million subscriptions.

By comparison, EQ2 had 185k and EVE had 195k subscriptions.

I guess what people like so much is that, even if it's 90% instanced, its a good pve game with some, again instanced, nice pvp. All this easy willy with no grind.

I have purchased GW (prophecy) more than 1 year ago. Played for about 2 weeks and left early at lvl 17. I couldn't finish it, I didn't like the instanced game play. Huge open worlds are so much better.

Anyway, I still have the game lying around in a drawer. Can someone tell me if the game updates have changed/improved the game during the past 2 years, or is it still the same ?

I really don't get the whole it's not an MMO argument. It is. It's Massive (sure it's not seamless) its Multiplayer and its Online. It passes all three initials so it is an MMO just not the typical one that you are used to. It's is basically the best Free to Play MMO out there with Great PVP and decent PVE. PVE could be better but that's what GW2 is for. It's a popular game and it's numbers keep rising...

The game play is comletely instanced. You select your team members in the cities, and then when you go out into the world you are completely alone with your team. It's impossible to meet someone else when you are playing in the game world.

It's not an MMO. It's a multi player game.

2 biggest reasons this game is successful?   no monthly fee and no grind.

without a monthly fee, you don't feel forced to play.  without the grind you don't have to waste tons of time building a character to enjoy pvp.

All games today are so desperate to keep players logged in that they create this huge world full of so many things to accomplish, that one can literally spend the rest of their freaking lives trying to do so.   Ya great life.

Guildwars on the other hand is all end game content.  You don't spend all your time leveling, you get to max level quickly then you can do whatever you want.  If you want the high end armour, go for it.  It's optional and has the same stats as your regular easy to obtain max armour it just looks cooler.

Bottom line, it's a game you can pick up and play whenever you feel like it, no pressure attached.

The PvP is good, so is the PvE. It's large, long and deep. It requires you to use your brain. You can't mindlessly just throw on your skills and charge in. It's a good game considering it's B2P (Buy to Play). To name a few of the reasons why it's good.

The people who made Guild Wars really thought the game out. The character classes are numerous yet balanced. The design is very detailed and pleasing to look at. They made sure inflation doesn't go out of hand by controlling what you can or cannot buy from other players, for example you can only buy armor from NPCs. The game itself also takes a very long time to finish and has alot of choices and variation. Plus it's constantly supported with holiday events and game updates.

In simple - the developers worked very hard on creating a world that has all angles covered right from the beginning. They heavily built up lore and thought things out to very minor details in that department. As such their storylines, though not necessarily amazing, far exceed the quality of many other MMOs out there. Apart from that, they kept things simple. The interface is clean and refined, players are told exactly where to go when they are questing and instant map travel was included instead of another means.

Also, one should note that Guild Wars is a very polished titled, and is updated regularly. The team hosts events every week, with parties and a festivals being a common sight. Updates are also usually applied at least on a weekly basis. Not to mention it looks darn beautiful too!

So in summary, it offers what many other MMOs out there offer, but in a much easier-to-play offering along with no monthly fee. It screams win.

agree 100% with what everyone said about guild wars (only the good parts). awesome balanced pvp, good pve with plenty of dungeons, deep story, nice graphics, f2p.

what more would you want in an mmo... except less instancing...

    well

the best word describes gw i can think of is "Unique"

and most of people plays it because of that, it simply offers a unique game play for both pvp and pve

gw is one of the few games that has growing number of players with time, most of mmo's reach a peak then starts to decay and go into oblivion

While I can't speak for everyone.. I think the thing that keeps me into GW is the combat almost feels more tactical and forces you to think about your approach. Sure there's several ways to beat a boss but what way works with the build you've brought to the battlefield? Also combat is blazingly fast.. it's not easy playing other MMO's now cause things seem to happen so terribly slowly.

secondly, GW fits around my schedule. You have no idea how many times I've had to get up and go do something for hours at a time, so if I'm deep into a quest or mission and the time isn't a factor, I'll just leave myself logged in and my team standing there.. so far Olias and Mhenlo have yet to complain, Cynn does a little but she gets over it fast. If I don't have time to group with other players I can still progress through PVE quite well... I have a few friends in game and we get together when we can, but if they're not on it's ok.

    >_> <_< ^_^

    < < < agrees with  everyone here

i havent found anything bad in the game that'll make me even think of leaving it. people mainly complain abt skill nerfs but i have learned to adapt. nice to hear a lot of positive responses in this thread.

What people like so much about Guildwars imo is the fact you don't have to pay for it. Many players would choose WoW instead of GW if they were willing to pay for it but to me it seems that GW is the F2p version of WoW for many gamers. I personnaly love GW, because there is absolutly no grinding in game and that is something really great. The gw-community rocks aswell. Many nice players who are always willing to help you. So that why GW became so popular.

I have played and still play on occasion all the major MMOs out there(wow,eq2,eve,lotro,etc) but i always find myself back in the GuildWars universe.  IMO if GuildWars was a p2p MMO they would still have the population of eve or eq2. It is just a well designed and beautiful game world that can keep you entertained for hours on end.

Well, I can't really respond with anything that hasn't already been mentioned...but I can't resist putting my two cents in.  I think GW is a great MMO (and, yes, it is a MMO).  I play almost every evening.

Actually no, I dont like WoW for different reasons. Main reason is that it doesnt have a mentoring system like EQ2/CoH. High max lvl without mentoring system, means I cannot play with my friends most of the time. Although I liked EQ2 at start because it has nice solutions to things that I normally hate in gearbased MMO's, I eventually got bored with having to replace my armor every tier.

I guess I just dont like gearbased MMO's.

GW simply has a low max lvl and lets you play endgame most of the time. Different areas need different solutions (skillsets) and mobs behave like teams. It is more about tactics then plain gear. This is a different approach then in EQ2/WoW kind of games.

WoW have 10 millions subscribers (at least someone say so) What is WoW more than any other? I can say GW is best in any aspect that WoW is fine and do not have features where WoW sux. In addition its FREE. The best feature in WoW is PvP Arena. I have played WoW for a year and have top ranked 2v2 and 3v3 Priest and can say GW has much better and balanced PvP. Hope this answer is enought.
