Mark (WAR Dev) speaks on stealth

Folks,

I'll comment more when appropriate on this issue but for now what I'm willing to say is simply this. The stealth that we had in DAoC or that can be found in WoW and/or other games is not in WAR now and I still have no intention of allowing it into the game. As some people have commented here and in other places, what they have seen is a system that allows for two of the lightly armored classes to close quickly with a target. There will be no combination of stealth + long-range damage dealing in the game. Two quick FYIs for ya. Some of the leaks regarding stealth have been, quite frankly, BS. During our last phase of testing there were some bugs in the implementation ("Gee, really Mr. Wizard, you had bugs in a Beta Test? I'm surprised!") of the classes closing/survival ability. Second, as our beta testers know, I have said that I will take out any system or sub-system that I believe is a net negative in terms of RvR enjoyment. And this is one of those sub-systems that would certainly be looked at amazingly carefully before we committed to it. One of the best parts of beta is the ability to iterate on existing systems as well to try other systems to see what works and what doesn't work.

The FYIs are the big reason I don't want to go into any more depth regarding what we are doing with this system. It is subject to change based on what I see over the next few weeks. Considering that we are about to begin a couple of major RvR test cycles, nobody should get worked up about what we have, don't have, might have regarding this issue, it's truly pointless.

Bump to spread the info if you haven't gotten over to the IGN Forums.

The post reveals that they seem to be considering this mechanic as a way for DPS to close-distance, like the Marauder tentacle.

Although I thought we saw a Witch Hunter shooting his gun from stealth in one video but that's likely one of the things they're looking into as well as the host of other issues in PvE and PvP that will need to be balanced if they use this as the closing mechanic for WH and WEs.

At least now the rationale behind the mechanic is more clear.

    The Second Day Vet

Closed beta...time for squashing bugs and changing things that looked GREAT on paper but didn't work so well out in the game world :P

Time to apply that "mud" term again...not written in stone til after release.  hehe

I remember DAOC and stealthers,  danged Lurikeens...couldn't see them  ..well back in the day near release I am talking.    "Sometimes" you might see a small shadow on the snow..out in the forest, but they were basically invisible.

By the time my poor little Dwarf Runemaster knew for sure they were there, she was stunned ( paralyzed? forgive my memory was awhile ago), poisoned and well on her way to dead.  :P

Hopefully this time around ..there will be a way to fight back and not just sit there helplessly and die.  :D

Thats all I had to say.......

OH and keep up the good work guys...I can't wait!!

    Cend

Bah! I knew it... I didn't even bother to get into the fray of that post or others from other forums.

I actually don't intend to ever go to a discussion when one part or the two are argueing about facts that are unknown or very dubious.

Anyway thanks for the info and links Vmoped - One more cheers to you my friend!

(pitty the colour you choose thought - haha - but then again I imedialty know it's you!)

I never really agreed with the rogue "disappearing into nowhere" mechaninc that MMOs tend to use.  Hiding in shadows is one thing.  Disappearing in the face of an army of enemies under full light with nary a bit of cover about is ... absurd, really, in my opinion.

And mostly.... I appreciate a developer with a spine.

Stealth as it is in wow is absurd. and im glad they are not adding that to WAR. but tbh, i wouldnt mind if they made an ability that lasts 10-15 sec that made the player semi-transparent, hiding their name, so that they are harder to see, but still visible. would be great for when a group goes for a flag, so that they dont attract to much attention compared to lets say a blackguard.

And I feel wholey better now about taking my stance of wait and see...of course its still a wait and see scenario to how it plays out in the end.   I'm glad Mark said something he could of just ignored the chaos that has ensued since that video.  (btw the guy who played that witch hunter should be beaten with a stupidity stick for wasting our time with a video of him acting like a dummy and running up to the biggest baddest most armored toon to try and kill lol).

Wow, and here it was I thought all these "stealth in War" posts were actually not breaking "NDA", just wow.

On a note, they will implement some form of phasing in and out,but as Mark said "will be warily approached and looked at in the process". I don't think folks "even if it is in the game (trying not to break NDA here) should pull out the "lynching" ropes for developers yet.

    Thanks for the post :)

I appreciate them coming forward to discuss the topic to eliminate the speculation - but i am still irritated by people not being able to accept the fact that they know nothing before working themselves up resulting in devs having to make comments at all.

Even though I got tooled on more than one occasion by a stealther in DAOC and WOW, I like the concept of stealth/ambush.  It adds some dynamic flavor to the game.

Who knows, maybe WAR will be the first MMO to get it just right.

I really wish they had used this philosophy with DAoC.

The infamous "ToA will not affect RVR" statement.. I wonder if it was Mark who made that statement.  Then if you want to talk about things that make RvR unenjoyable... wow that list would be so long even I wouldn't want to read it.

I suppose I'm bitter because DAoC used to be a great game.

Then again I'm in WAR beta and was playing DAoC until 2 days ago when I hit cancel and deleted.. so maybe I'm bitter for some other reason.. gee Mr. Wizard.. I don't know what to say.

Well we can always hope they learned a few things from DAoC .. especially the stupid changes they are still making... we can.. hope at least..

The problem comes when players think they know whats best, when really all they are looking to do is make their class/playstyle more enjoyable regaurdless of how it effects others. Some people just comprehend the other side of the story so its stupid to them. Some people can't see passed what they want. Others can't see passed what other games have done. Everyone gets that tunnel vision that blocks out things they don't want to hear. You can only hope you have a trustworthy team or circle of friends to explain why your ideas wont work.

People make mistakes and learn from them. However there are still mistakes that people make over and over regaurdless of learning from the. I sm sure more than a few people on these forums have had hangovers and sworn to not drink that much again until the next party night when they do it all over again. My point being is that Mythic will make mistakes. We can hope that ToA was a once in a lifetime mistake but to think they wont make mistakes again trying to make the game better is short sighted.

they should try to make steath like real word some class should have the opt to deploy a some sort of camo net type thing or be able to use leaves and/or bushs or dirt  added to their armor make them hard to spot but not like wow or daoc that would be lame. but also give it like maybe 2 to 5 min limit so it runs out or falls of the armor for that matter. what do u guys think??

I hate stealth its so unbelievable a completely non magic based character can basically be invisible in full daylight and going by certain games completely up and disappear. Isnt invisibility a magical ability not rogues ffs.  An ability like a smoke bomb on a 2 minute cooldown a character could disappear by "blinding and hiding in smoke" but appear like 10 seconds later wud make more sense than a permanent use invisibility.

I'm not precisely sure how it will work (and I know this is the WAR forum), but chronicles of spellborn has a class (skinshifter) that turns into different objects and creatures in order to ‘hide’. So they can still move around undetected by NPCs provided they are in an appropriate form, and that harmless looking bush you just passed... should be interesting.

More on topic, I am glad to hear WAR will not have 'invisibility style' stealth. In every game I have played with that style stealth it's always been the problem that the stealther is overpower while hiding and underpowered while visible, and as such never 'balanced'.

WOW does stealth the best IMO because it never made it sooo fun with both Druid and Rogue.

Please say your joking....WoW stealth was the worst stealth ever invented...infact if WAR's stealth went in and was WoW's stealth I'd pretty much return my collector's edition and the codes and never play.
