I know AMD is generally better. this is my proccessor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115028
but a friend of mine said that a proccessor for $50 that is AMD would be better for gaming than this. is that true?

No, Intel beats AMD in most applications at the moment. check the charts over at toms hardware guide
www.tomshardware.co.uk/charts/processors/3d-studio-max-9,369.html
Used to be true before core 2. not only do they run faster at stock speeds, but almost any core 2 can overclock probably 30%-50% over stock. don't quote my on that it just seems to be the average going rate. I hope AMD gets their stuff together, as it stands Intel doesn't have much of a competition.
Bottom line you have a great cpu that can outrun probably anything that AMD has out right now.

thats good to hear! thanks for your imput! I appretiate it.
I have another question...
When I play WoW in maximized windowed mode. there is a white flashing on the side of my screen...I was told and believed that it was my gphix card as I only have a 7300 512 ram. and it sarted after the last patch. what are ur guys' thoughts?
No problem, happy to help.
As far the white flashing, I would say it could be some sort of video card issue. I would make sure my drivers are up to date either that or your card could be overheating. check your temps when it starts to do and make sure they are not in the 80C+ range.

sounds like a possible driver, or heat issue. rivatuner has options within it to allow you to see your temp on your GPU on your task bar as well as OSD( on screen display) while playing games which is highly convenient. so you can see pretty much in realtime what type of temp's your dealing with when you play, this also allow you to not have to play in windowed mode and still see the info you need. but i have a feeling your probably dual boxing with 2 accounts (windowed mode e.g.) so could be your stressing your card with 2 clients running at the same time. if that is the case id invest in a good video card. a 8800 GT maybe those are pretty cheap now if you dont want to splurge too much on a video card. i run Eq2 with 2 accounts and my 8800 GTS 640 runs them perfectly (albeit on high performance)
3.4ghz Phenom II X4 965, 8GB PC12800 DDR3 GSKILL, EVGA 560GTX 2GB OC, 640GB HD SATA II, BFG 1000WATT PSU. MSI NF980-G65 TRI-SLI MOBO.
I think Necessity is a bigger concern then anything else when it comes to processors. Is a $269 proc really necessary compared to a $100. Sure for high processor dependant tasks like Software rendering its very important, but for Games they usually don't utilize the processor enough. Also for Software Rendering, a 4-core proc will be better suited then a 2-core proc.
At this point I would stick with AMD just because of prices. Sure AMD doesn't really compete in power, but in price/performance they know whats up. Not like any game is really going to require an E6850 anytime soon anyway. The highest end ones require procs from 2 years ago. The most important thing for gaming is the video card.
I still don't understand why that processor costs that much. I know the 8000 series processors are still hard to come by, but for about 70 dollars less you can get an E8400 which is an even better processor than the one you linked.
Its cheaper to make an e8400 then an e6850 because its 45nm instead of 65nm.
I will admit that with the recent B3 revision and release of the 9850 AMD is now a viable option, but I would still argue that Intel still has them beat price/performance as the e8000 series is not only cheaper and faster but can overclock better.
No games may not require a $200+ cpu to play but you will need one in order to play it well. I recently upgraded from an AMD 5600+ (which is in the $100 range) to an e8400 (in the e6850 range) and have noticed a huge difference in crysis alone. I can run med/high and get 30fps on average. with my old cpu I had to run it on low to get the same frames.
But yes, as always the video card should be your primary concern for gaming.
