I've heard about the bugs, the low population, etc. I used to play when it came out and I am considering a return. So, is it worth playing at all? Is the population that low? If it's worth playing explain why..and if it's not, explain why it's not..
Comments
pop is very low..around 30-40k only...and you will be on your own for most of the time at the lower levels.
but the game itsef is not that bad, there are a few glitshes here and there...but they are not too bad....wont ruin the gaming experiance.
I think the 30-40k estimate is being very, very generous. My best guess(and thats all anyone can do) is closer to 10-25k. Performance still isnt where it should be, but its getting better. Id syggest waiting until after the "hitching fix" goes in and the newbie experience is redone.

The population may be low but you wont find grouping hard (other then the usual grouping problems that you have in any games). Its true that you will be soloing for the lower levels up untill about level 12ish id say.
As for the glitches they are few and far between then on release but it still has a few, nothing a 30second relog or a patition wont fix, usually get a response from a GM in 12hours max...max.
hopes this helps
I came back to VG 4 days ago, rolled up a new warrior and every quest I've ran from lvl 1-16 I've had camp competition (like 2-8 other ppl camping for same quests) every step of the way. Either the player base is increasing or alot of the bored 50's are running new alts (and not twinking them at all and I I highly doubt they've all decided to start fresh without twinkage)
low population? only 4 servers as they have done server mergers recently, anyway got it on the way and looking forward to playing, hopefully tomorrow

Interesting Fact - I own 27 Tarantula's
Want my honest opinion. No...they still have lots to do and they keep re-writing it instead of fixing what needs fixed - like persistent bugs that have been there since day one and broken quest. Plus they need to finish filling out the world....underwater environments and revamp or add things to Kojan. So no...give it another year - maybe.
Why did you stop playing it?
The best change during these last year in my opinion is the riftways, rentable flying mounts. And most noteworthy the change on not making chains disappear until the timer runs out even if you use something else after they have triggered.
The worst change would be equipment expertise, which imo is not something I cared about that much.
But as I never felled through the world, never experienced any of these really "gamebraking" bugs I can't tell.
I don't log in and find myself beneath or inside objects in the world anymore. I also can't use torches to see where chunklines are anymore. And I have about same performance in Vista as in XP, which is on the low side 20 to 25 fps and on the high 40-50fps windowed mode.
Running on 1950 512MB, AMD AM2 5200, 3GB.
Kahl runs like this, and this is after the caching is done. The initial hitching is there but it disappears, as shown in the footage.

I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
"You have the right not to be killed"
NO absolute NO this gama has a nice grafic but you can´t move without see a bug, there are bugs many bugs in everywhere almost imposible to play. And you´ll need a computer that will be realese in 2030 to play it.
I will give you an honest opinion on it m8,It could be a great game,it really could but the bugs are still there, the zoning is still there, alot of the time you feel you are all alone,It is the feeling alone that bothered me so much,I dont pay to play just to spend maybe(yes this is true)maybe 8 hours and not see 1 single player,Yes you may see a flurry of chat from time to time on general but thats not what you pay for.
My advice I would leave it alone for now, maybe just maybe if they can turn it around re-release with all the buttons, then try it again, trying it now will just lead to dissapointment.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

The game has its problems for sure...but OMG! Your post is purely trollish in nature. Vanguard plays pretty sweetly and if I have to make a fraps to prove it -so be it. It just that it does still need work. Hopefully SOE will stop messing with re-writes and start making the game better and add some new content where it is needed!
These threads on this forum are pointless. You will get nothing but haters and lovers and the truth is inbetween. The game has improved since release. Go to vgplayers.com and read the patch notes going back awhile.
It has some good things and some bad.
A large beautivful world that is seamless where you can go anywhere.
A greot combat system that gives you a lot more options and is more then just random button pushing.
A diverse set of activities for players, adventuring, crafting, diplomacy, harvesting
Some bad things
it still hitches and while it has improved it still does
bugs, there will be graphic errors, settings that cause graphic flicking, quests that don't work right and events or dungeon agro issues.
starting areas while diverse and some of them damn interesting are spread thin so you won't see a lot of people. it will make you think there isn't much population and early on very hard to get a good group.
One rumor I'll blast out right now
The player pops on saradon are great. I did a comparison of all the top games, eq2, wow, and VG and if you are a new player VG is by far the best game to start if you want to group. I checked the low end pops on all the servers and VG is at least 2-3x any other game. And this holds up into the mid ranges. EQ2 and Wow are very top heavy and don't leave room for much else.
So read some think about it try it if you like or just wait for a free trial that will probably start in 2-3 months. Or just wait for some other game but don't expect to get any good info on this forum..

If I had a dollar for every one of these kinds of threads. But, then again, these threads (and reading them) are what convinced me to try the game again. There's something to be said about a passionate fan base. They helped lure me back in.
So far, I've got to say that the gaming experience has vastly improved. Population seems to be high and I'm always seeing people around the major quest hubs. Luckily this world is so big that I can find solace very easily when I want to.
Performance seems to be a tad better, especially in cities like Khal. Chunking is still there but for me it is a slight 1-2 second pause and then I'm moving on again. About the same as zoning into a building in LotRO or a raid dungeon in WoW.
Hitching is still an issue but I'm now playing VG on a two year old computer. I tend to play with higher graphical settings and thus accept a certain amount of hitching.
Honestly, if you liked VG before but hated all the bugs and problems, then you will like the game even more now with all of the improvements. The game is far from perfect, but it has come a long way in one year. People need to give VG a chance to breathe. Try it out, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I am certainly a happy returning player. Wish I had never left and just stuck it out....
Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.
The game has improved, so that if you liked it before you will like it now. But it still requires a high end gaming computer to run properly, and it still has a lot of bugs, broken things, and other technical issues.
Also the rate of updates is questionable at best. While it's true that SOE has done some good improvements, the dev team seems to be just too small. They simply don't have the resources that would be needed to really fix the game, and then start expanding that, they are just keeping it on life support like SOE is keeping so many others of its games.
My advice is to wait for the trial. You'll both save your money, and will get to test the game at the point where the devs think that it's worth presenting to players.
Its worth it if you can handle slow level, some bugs, and not over the top population. And if your a hardcore gamer, its worth a try.
VG has has 4 servers. WoW has hundreds(exaggeration) Eq2 has 22 servers. So your comparison and claim really aren't accurate. Of course VG would appear to have a healthy population because its all concentrated into 4 servers with Saradon having the highest concentration. Nice try though ethion.

Honestly, yes it is worth playing at the moment.
I was one of the vanbois that played since early closed beta, played the first 4 months of launch and loved the time I had playing it but gave up as it turned out to not have the issues addressed in time, and lost so many players.
The current status of the game is like how it should have been at launch, it runs incredible - I have a very power rig but the first 5 screenies in the user gallery are taken by me. The game never even chokes for me, rarely any bugs, amazing dungeon set ups great stuff.
You can put this statement in the bank. This forum has been like this since I registered.
This is about as honest an opinion as you will find on these forums.
The rest I just whole-heartedly agree with, every word of it. EXCEPT for the 'no good info' statement . . . . he actually gave you good info there.
One concern I have for VGs pop at the moment is that many folks (including guildies and friends of mine in game) are calling VG their temporary home until May 20th when you know what releases. Of the folks who aren't interested in AOC a good chunk of them will only be hanging around until WAR releases.
Now dont get me wrong - Im not saying half the server is going to walk, but from what I have seen and heard in game from many long time friends is that VG is a 'fill in time' game for them.

don't be an idiot. I'm not saying there are more players in vg then other games. I said when you log in at your starting levels there are more people your level that you can group with. I have accounts on all 3 games and Logged into each game at the same time and compared the number of players available to group with from 1-10 or 11-20 this is where VG does much better. So if you are looking to join a new game and want one where you can actually group with people then VG is the best game choice. This isn't an opinion this is a fact. I did this test just a couple nights ago.
just to be really clear so you don't get confused. I'm not talking about across all servers I'm talking about just one server since as a player that's all that really matters to you isn't it?? The fact that wow has 1000 players lvl 1-10 across 100 servers does absolutely no good when you are looking to group with someone level 10. Where the fact that there are 200 lvl 1-10 people on one server means that there are far more people to group with. on the server you are playing on.
I'd go give you numbers on all the games right now but my freeking computer is broken again. Twice now in the last month. Seems like I'm cursed when it comes to had drives. Lost my system disk 4 weeks ago and now I just lost another freeking disk or maybe the motherboard raid is freeking out. I'd like on then off then on and creating a hash on my c drive again leaving me with a boat anchor
So looks like I'll be reinstalling eq2, vanguard, and wow once I get it working again... I'll probably not do VG or Wow that fast since I'm mainly playing eq2 which is my current fav game.

No its not. Of course that is just my opinion. Wait for a trial or find someone subscribed that will let you log in a bit before shelling money for this turd.
After playing for a year including beta time...I gave up...the game is essentially dead...they didn't ahve the money to reach the vision, and now its too late...they'll never get enough ppl to play to give the game a lasting future with $ for good expansions.
Avidly waiting for WAR now...i'm ready for a good PvP mmo.
After playing a year and a half.... got to slowly admit it.... I mean REALLY....
THIS GAME FREAKING ROXXS!!!!
yes, i like the game. however that does not mean that you will necessarily like it. The best bet, honestly, is to wait until they get the trial out and then see for yourself. Oh, and its ok if you try AoC in the meantime, you see it will mostl likely come out just before VG gets the trial island out. Vanguard will still be here, its not going anywhere
Im totally a minority here but when i look at what this game has to offer, i like it better than any other mmo out right now. Huge world, housing (non instance) guild halls, flying mounts, casting while moving (what took so long?) dynamic weather you can see approach, totally unique classes, diplo and crafting as a whole nother tree to lvl, miles worth of view distance, player made boats, and though this is subjective the best gfx in any mmo.... for me anyhow.
What sucks for me, minor bugs and hitching in new areas and well i dont like BoP items
So i would say yes try this game, i will only improve i think.

Even after the "hitching fix" this game isn't going anywhere anymore (because of the 10-25k population). I am currently playing Vanguard, and am loving it to this day. But the only thing I hate most is not being able to find groups starting from being a noob all the way to the high levels. I have 5 level 50 characters, and 90% of the time I soloed to reach those level. The only time you will find a group is make one yourself or spam constantly, It could range from 5 mins to countless hours. I've join plenty of high end raiding guilds and am dissappointed in every single one. The reason I join those guilds is to have better ease of getting groups, but only to find out that its the same as finding a pick up group. And guilds with ventrilo is even worse because they are in their own little worlds, always grouping with the same people and rarely helping everyone else, also majority of the guilds I joined that has ventrilo are friends in RL.
So if you're really still interested in coming back, this will be the best advice you will ever recieve. "Depend on yourself and no other." Everything I needed, I was able to aquire through crafting, because they are equivalent to high end group boss drops or quests, only raiding gear comes on top. I do everything myself. Don't get me wrong I love this game, that's why I'm still playing it. So if you're a type that plays a lone most of the time then yea come back, but if you dont have patience then no its not worth your time. You wanted an honest opinion, and that's what you recieved.

10 to 25k is a ridiculously off number. Population has been on a steady increase since its low point of around the 40k 'guess'. So much so that I'd 'guess' the population is closer to 75k. There is absolutely no freakin way that it is lower than it was in the GU1 and GU2 days.
