Pvp question

Hello,

I just returned to Guild Wars after a long time away and owning only the Prophecies campaign,What exactly does one need to compete in the top bracket of pvp ?   Does it require so much that it's not even worth the effort ?

To be truely "Competitive" in Guild Wars PvP (GvG), you really need all three campaigns and should really have Eye of the North

However, if you don;t have them all, you can make that up with the PvP skill packs available through the ingame store, however, although you would have the skills, you still wouldn;t have access to playing as a Dervish, Paragon, Ritualist or Assasin

You will need all the campaigns and Eye of the North in order to compete in the highest bracket of PvP. Once you have that covered, it's as simple as making a PvP character and playing a bit of low-end PvP to unlock some skills you might need, then you're all set. You'll need to find a guild that does Heroes Ascent too. It's much easier doing it with a guild compared to PUGs.

Do guilds still do Heros Ascent ?

    Pvping unlocks skills ?

when you pvp you get balthazar faction, and you use this faction at the priest of balthazar to unlock skills and runes and insignias. and yes some guilds do and are even made to solely compete in heroes ascent, but usually they have a req of hero rank 3 or more

So to obtain rank 3 in pugs about roughly how long would that take ?

also I plan on doing the pve part of the game before I get serious in pvp

It all depends on what build you're running, how good the PUGs are etc. It shouldn't take you long at all though. You need I think 180 Fame for Rank 3, which isn't much at all.

As far as builds, What build would be considered a defensive/support type ?      I would imagine that these would be in need and I have always played these types of roles.

Also where do you see the fame points ?   Is in the same area I see my faction rep?

for the build and stuff just check out the builds on PvXwiki. To see how much fame points you have go to the bring up the hero menu (H) and click on the titles tab. If you dont have any fame then it wont show anything

Regarding your questions about HA; HA is fairly competitive and may prove hard for a beginner at PvP as well as one owning only one campaign. HA revolves much around a few meta teams that consist of a already set setup of builds, thus you will be asked to play a build and often these builds include skills from all campaigns. Currently the meta team for acquiring fame is Sway which is what you will most likely be playing. Additionally HA requires knowledge of the game and how the different places you visit work and what your goal there is, which is the reason why most people want you to be rank 3.

There are of course people who form teams by just randomly inviting everyone they see, these teams tend to be called "Randomway" and is usually not very successful. HA requires that you got access to the most skills since you will otherwise come across problems with running the builds you're asked to play.

Now one of the reasons why I posted was also to mention that my character name is Dancing With Nature and you may add me as a friend. I try to organize HA teams, and if you got a basic knowledge of PvP and can run the builds required of you may come along. And it will take a very long time if you're rank 0, can't run half of the builds asked for and running only Randomway teams.
