I'm considering returning to EVE fro another try. When I left about a year and a half ago, the game was won. BoB and MC got their way in everything. No one else had the slightest chance. There were rumors of cheating.

Is any of that still the case?

The game was never won,BoB worked hard to get what they had,and everyone allways had a chance. As far as cheating,..well.....the ones on top are allways blamed for cheating just like anything else.

But BOB is allmost defeated in terms of looking at the political map.there are new kids on the block now and eve-online will never be owned by anyone. If you feel the way you did you may allways feel that way.

BoB and MC is not the payers they used to be they are still out there but there territory is smaller and there energy is less active.

As for the cheating rumour it never really affected the EvE population and the one ultimately responsible was punished Long ago.

You see every big empire in history and in EvE goes through the same life-cycle which is something like this.

Ascension - It comes into existence and fights and rises to the top.

Dominance - It is now top dog and runs things well and everyone is full of purpose and drive. And all enemies avoid angering the empire.

Imperialism - It has been around for a while and it still runs things if only with a little less efficiency perhaps. And everyone is still happy to be there in this empire running it but are now bogged down by repetition and some boredom and some of the energy has gone from the Empire. And now some of the more bold enemies smell weakness and Begin to test the empires defences.

And the the empire starts to break up either from Civil war or from outside wars And whats left of the old core empire drags back its borders to reform.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

You might want to head on over to virginworlds.com and listen to both podcasts: The Drone Bay and Warp Drive Active, especially the latter because they tend to focus on current news. WDA will give you a good picture of the political landscape of the game and they keep talking about how BoB are being squeezed in all directions. As a previous poster said, nobody will ever own EVE. Once a corp. gets big enough, you better bet that some other group will come up and do what they can to topple the corp. at the top and this seems to be what has been happening in EVE for awhile now.

Of course, I wouldn't personally know anything. I'm just some solo miner trying to do his best to stay alive.

Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.

Good to know. When I played they could destroy anyone, anytime, at will. And did.

    WILCO. Thanks for the pointer.

I recently returned and the last I played was in 06.  The game has changed dramatically from that time and I think it's much better; both visually and in terms of game mechanics.  No longer are the days when you had a tug full of jammers that could multilap and make it impossible to break jaming.  Now everyone has a fair shot and it takes real tactical knowledge and skill to win large engagements.

I throughly enjoy the game, I've joined up with a small corp in a med sized  alliance.  I had to remake a character since my old character was wholly outdated and screwed up sp wise.  Plus side, I had over 400 items of loot waiting for me when I returned and refined it all (the refining amount has been generously increased) and now have 220m sitting in the bank.  Nothing to brag about compared to private fortunes now, but a good start in terms of requiping myself and procuring a little nicer weapons adn skill books.

Just curious. Why'd you stop playing?

I quit because I never won a battle in over a year of play. Sure, I won some ship to ship engagements, but it was clear that without a couple of years in the real time training system, I wasn't gonna' be a competitor. I just wasn't willing to pay while I trained in real time, unable to do anything interesting.

Is the training system still real time?

I stopped playing because I was in law school and it became abundently clear to me that I would have no time to really get into the game.  I'm finished with school and have my own office which has given me ample time (in the evening and weekends) to play.

The training system is real time.  However, there are so many more selections and customizations when you create a character that you can be inside a cruiser in a matter of a couple of days.  They have added many more skills to choose from.  In fact, you come out of character creation with about ~800k in skill points, which back in 06 was not true.

Winning battles, by myself? No.  I have won skirmishes with some other new players like myself (the game has completely changed and I am considered new again).  They have balanced the way certain things work and the game mechanics are fairer.  The major corps of then are virtually gone, replaced by minor corps.  These corps are extemely helpful and have greatly aided me in gaining insight to how the game operates.

Sure I lose a ship every now and then, but the corp helps me with the losses.  The missions payout great, and if you learn the salvage skill you can easily gross a couple million in salvage alone for lvl 1 combat missions.

I've recreated 3 characters since coming back to find one that works for me.  First caldari but I hated the missle-dependent play style.  Then Gallente but the drone dependent playstile didn't work either.  Then Minmatar and that has served me well.  I can chose to load missles, projecticle turrets (which are way better then hybrid imho), drones, and can select a ship that is shield or haul tanking at my option.  This versitility is what I love.  I'm only at 970k sp, but I'm in a Battle Cruiser and able to hold my own.  Sure I'm not the most optimized BC pilot, but I'm slowly working on specilizing my support skills.

I would suggest getting into the 14-day trial and checking it out yourself.  Do the entire 10 mission tutorial; you'll get abotu 500k in credits, 2 new frigs (a lvl one); and a good feel on how the game has changed.  The most you lose is the time you put in the trial.

    That's a good reason!

Will do. I'll download it today. Thanks for the helpful information. I expected to get flamed, but you really helped me sort out my decision. EVE is a big time commitment, so I wanted the real scoop.

I'll post a message after I do the trial, to let you know how it's going. Again, thanks.

Im thinking about returning too because I used to play on a pretty wack PC but upgraded now. I barely got to see the trinity patch but I'm wondering if they added black holes and binary stars in the systems that are supposed to have them based on the storyline.. ??
