How long will you wait?

As most of you know, Darkfall announced beta back in 2002 and a clan beta in 2005. Both betas fell through. "Preparation" for beta was announced in July 2006, but no beta occurred. In September 2007 Darkfall announced it would soon accept applications for beta, but the beta has not yet started.

I have a question for Darkfall fans. My question is this: how long will you wait for this game before you lose interest? Is it of vital importance for Aventurine to release a beta ASAP, or are you willing to give the game an additional few years?

Ha! Considering most fantasy MMOs cater to wimpy types and carebears, I can wait forever for either DF or Mortal Online to come out. I salivate at knowing that there will finally be MMO games that truly separate real players from wimpy ass carebears who think every MMO should be like WoW or LotRO. May they forever roast in hell!!!!

Currently playing: No MMOs. They all suck.

I don't care how long they take, it doesn't affect my life at-all, as long as i get to play it when their done, I'll be happy.

At the moment i amuse myself by pitying the haters, and watching them cry :)

As long as not  other games get announced with similar feature list like DarkFall i will wait for DarkFall.

Take this  fresh announced Mortal Online when i look in their Faq it says, there will  be restrictions of classes at the same moment my interest went to void.

Havent you heard ? Mortal Online is looking like the new Darkfall. This time around its another small team, but they are far more open to questions.

I stopped waiting on Darkfall a few yrs ago, when it comes out I'll check it out, but its gone to the bottom of the pile for me personally. There is not so much buzz about the game anymore.

Should waiting for a game affect you at all? I have/had/will have other games to play while I wait for DF so TBH it really doesn't matter how long it takes.

Since sandbox games in a fantasy enviroment is all im gonna play in the future in the MMORPG genre and there is none arround at the moment i guess i just have to wait til there is one arround.

Darkfall is the best choice at the moment on delivering something spectacular. But i was really glad seeing one more company making another sandbox, Mortal Online. So now i will wait for 2 hopefully good  games.

I dont have a timeframe. Worthless games like WoW, AoC and Warhammer isnt on my agenda. Stopped playing shit-games a long time ago. And there is sooooooooooo many with my opinion. The MMORPG genre of today isnt delivering any sandboxes in fantasy enviroments, all they deliver is "theme-parks" games.

Seing another sandbox under development was something really nice.=)

There is alot of buzz arround for the people waiting for a sandbox game. AoC is a "theme-park" one and we already have loads of those.

So for the ones wanting something else then the WoW-copies we seen arround last years there is alot of buzz for Darkfall. Just look at this board. Seems there is more buzz arround DFO then your game AoC.=)

To ''stop waiting'' for a game seems really weird to me, it's not like my entire life is revolving around waiting for Darkfall. So in a sense, I will never stop waiting. I just live my life, and I'll play the first good sandbox game when that comes out, if it's Mortal Online or Darkfall doesn't really concern me much. Just damned tired of point N' click.

With all do respect, there is also a lot of buzz around piles of horse dung in fields too, doesn't make it appealing to most people.  After seven years and they still have NOTHING other than what can be passed off as mock-up material, this game is and will continue to be Vaporware until proven otherwise.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

Correct answer:  "As long as I must".

Now, I am no waiting on Darkfall or what it propose myself, I have different tastes.  But I assume anyone caring for any particuliar aspect would do that.

Maybe I will have less time.  Maybe I will be sick.  Maybe I will grow too old and died.  But I will wait for the right MMO.  I can't force WAR devs to make a PvE server, but I can wait for the right MMO.  Feedbacks and talk as well.  That much I can do.  :)  I am waiting since 2002 or since 2006/2007 depending on how you "define" the waiting.  CoX was a partial answer to my craving, but eh, I crave for medieval fantasy and they make me deadly afraid of the nerfing.

So, I have been waiting since 2002 or 2006-2007 depending on how broad you make this definition, I can wait all the remaining of my life.  Of course, every second I always wish the waiting is over.  But eh, Jews are waiting for 2000 years?  What is a year or a lifetime compared to that?  :P

In 2002 I was mostly looking at SOE with hopes in my eyes.  Now I am mostly looking at NCsoft, but my gaze is turning away.  And I don't just wait, I do other stuff, like live my life, play other games, suggest improvements, send my resume and post my ideas.  :P

I will wait until it releases, or something equal or better shows up.

And Mortal Online is classbased and lack naval combat. Its very interesting......but nothing as DF. But i support Swedish developers : )

Never started waiting!  If it makes a release, excellent I'll play it!  Until then there are plenty of other games to play and forgo a so-called-wait!

You'll wait forever for this to be released.  I am stunned it still has the fanbois fooled like this, you guys should know better.  A few alpha videos showing nothing substantial and you guys are happy lol.

The best thing to happen to darkfall is that it gets sold to a large development company who will actually take this game out of the alpha stage and then if your lucky a few years after that, you will see the beginings of a limited closed beta.

Had potential lots of it!, but those days are past and this development is going nowhere.

    Darkfall R.I.P.

Pretty much like me, although, this is the first time, I don't feel the urge to play any of the MMORPGs out there right now, and that's troubling :p. But FPS's are great as well.

  • GruntiesGrunties Member Posts: 859

Games come out when they come out. I don't actively 'wait' for them really despite my sig, i keep an eye on them as long as their design or world is interesting or compelling in some way. I don't sit at my pc all day checking my email or news sites asking myself 'are we there yet are we there yet?'. I also don't resign myself to a very immature and childish attitude of 'if I don't get it NOW im not interested in it'. I'll leave that behavior for the kiddies.

So the answer to the question, 'how long will I wait'... I have to answer that with another question :)

How long will it be before an mmo offers things like true freedom of exploration and action, risk and reward, the ability to create and destroy on a meaningful level, and skill based advancement? If no other game tackles these things, then I would imagine darkfall will always have a role in fulfilling that void, and would always be worth waiting for. And even if another game does start being developed that have some of these qualities (that other game mentioned in this thread seems interesting, ill keep an eye on it), that does not mean all other games suddenly arent worth waiting for.

Are the features that darkfall is trying to deliver any less compelling now than they were 4-5 years ago? I don't think time has made them any less desirable. If anything, they have become more so, given that the latest crop of games still hasn't accomplished them in all this time.

Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
    Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

Now lets take a look at that for a quick second. So you admit that they have shown something right? Though I suppose the 4-6 vids, tons of screenshots, and those few who have played it must obviously mean nothing in your eyes but than I guess if we're going that route AoC must have nothing as well right?

Of course I suspect that your response will show some form of hypocrisy.

DFO been in development since mid 2003, your wrong and im right. Some say 2001 but thats not right. The problem for DFO is that it was announced from day one 2001 and they just have to live with that.

The restart from scratch mid 2003 is my start-date and they couldnt have that date a secret one either since game was announced 2001.

Mortal Online been in production since 2005 and they announce it now as most game developers do. Best for DFO would have been keeping it a secret til 2006 and announce it then. Kinda hard to do when the original game developers Razorwax announced it 2001.

Im not living my life arround DFO success or not. If there isnt a sandbox to play i play other games til there is one arround, easy as that. Playing "theme-park" games is something i did in the past and that time is long gone now. I dont play unchallenging games anymore. Dont play crap-games anymore.

Let me help with some confusion here. DF's development DID start in 2001 by a company name Rasorwax and at the time of its conception there were (If I remember correctly) 3 members in all and only 1 of them was full time. They announced the beta for 2003 but by December of 2002 they ended up signing with their publisher which is named Aventurine to help with publishing and developing.

    Yep : )

That caused Razorwax to move to Greece, they set up a new office, got new hardware and expanded from 4 to about 20 developers.  Aventurine alse remade most of the "old" game engine.

So late 2003 they begun the development of the DF we know today.

I love to hear that story.

I will wait for Darkfall until I find a PvP that I feel is worth playing, whether that be AoC, WAR, or Darkfall.

  • IijsIijs Member Posts: 457

Seven years and counting. Actually it's only been six for me, I didn't hear about it until I was in SB beta.

But it's not like I'm "waiting" for the game. I'm waiting for AoC and WAR, because I know those games will release. Darkfall is like DN Forever... just laugh at the fanbois, and if it does come out decades later, have a look. Same as Prey, which took 11 years.

I found a PC Gamer article by Duke's devs in 1997 -- at the time they had planned a '98 release. They sound an awful lot like DF devs, if you ask me. (Just fyi, the original Duke Forever game was expected to require 16 mb ram, but recommended a very, very steep 32 mb!!!!. :) )

If you created a Top 10 vapourware list, Darkfall would be in the Top 3.

I completely agree, the very same for me. And there is no other game around, which offers something similar and will release in the near future. Mortal Online, Earthrise or Renaissance look interesting, but for all of them the same is true, they have almost no informations about their concept/features(and no, just sandbox and skill based is not a full concept) and are far away from release(at least 3+ years.. and dont confuse yourself with the 2009 release dates.. it will not happen). Or with other words, the DF team has at least time for another 3 years to finish it, and release it. And i am confident that DF will release or be canceled within this 3 years. And i am personally more positive for the release, than the cancel.

And of course, i will play other games(mmorpgs or just normal multiplayer games) during this time.. i dont waste time waiting.. no need to do so.. but i am always interested in games, which will bring something new to the table, or are able to be played and fun for more then a few weeks/month.

I really wanna play Darkfall, but if the game stays in development for 2,3 or 4 years more I will still follow it. Because I have a feeling the developers at Aventurine know what they are doing.

And you also have to remember that developing an unreleased game gives u so many more possibilities comparing to developing a released game. A lot of things cant be done when subscriberbase has to be taken into account. So I think more development equals more features and I am all about the features. I want a big game. Not AoC or wow

  • SeggallionSeggallion Member UncommonPosts: 684

I'll wait until the game either got canceled or something else shows up with similar features. Until then i can't so much beside play other games. No MMO at the time tho.
