The game is "A" for Adult Apparently.

MrTumN3sMrTumN3s Member Posts: 439

I thought this game was going to be teen, but after reading this interview,

http://www.lordsofdeath.com/www/?p=12

I found out that its going to be A for Adult.

Read here.

- “You #$^@ing noob!”

Obscene language is something I asked about numerous times as I know how my guildmates are (especially Judas). I was assured that no one will be banned for obscene language or things they type. The game will be rated as “adult” so if you don’t like to see /raped you can filter out that person or just take it like an adult.

Thats going to lose a VERY big playerbase if it turns out to that.

Like a full pvp game would be anything other than Adult, no surprise here.  Considering the source, I don't take much stock in what LoD has to say about DFO.  They are part of the "in crowd" as to if DFO is for real or a hoax.  Personally, I don't care one way or another, I just think they are highly over-rated.  They are just gamers like the rest of us.  No more, no less.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

They game they are making are not for everyone. Thay already know that. If that in any way cared about a big playerbase....that would have made a small WoW-clone in three years instead.

So if a player have a problem with harch language and lacks the ability to pull the trigger in the right moment...DF may seem a bit to cold.

Still, anyone that can cope with those things, they are looking forward to it instead : )

The easiest way i can explain this: Darkfall is like the last Rambo movie! Full PvP, gore, foul language and greifing. There were som carebears in that quest, but in the end the ones that survived becomes hardcore PvPers.

What you don't get is that an Adult Only rating gets the game banned from most shops and makes it hard to purchase. Sure there's online selling but still...

But since when does a "R" rated product mean less sales?

isnt that what we all want?  And as Aventurine dont care..i dont either : )

Like think about how some countries have issues with mature rated games like Kane and Lynch and AoC, think about how many more will react to an A rated game. Going to games like WoW, sure you do not want to attract kiddies, yet you do want a playerbase and active game. Going Adult Rated is not for the better imo

****edit. Think about jack thompson going ape shi* all over Darkfall. Hah

I'd love to play an Adult rated mmo, but....

This  game is not "Adult" because it hasnt even sniffed a production means let alone a rating service.

2nd off, they would never...ever...let it release in the USA as an adult rated game because of the incredible sales restrictions this would inflict. "A" rated games cannot be sold in almost every major retailer or chain. It can be DL'ed online, but only with age verification and only by a few sites that arent related to some of the big name companies.

lastly, recent polls show that almost 25% or 1/4 of all mmo gamers would be in the age range that is forbidden to even purchase the game, let alone play it.

I find it hard to believe they would want to limmit themselves in this many ways. They would have fewer customers, fewer means by which to get it to customers, and fewer people willing to finance the production of the game itself.

They will adjust the game so it is "M" rated for mature, at least they would in the US.

I have never thought about it (i live in Sweden). If people want something, they get it! If DF is sold in 3 out of 100 stores, then people will go to those 3 stores. And there is alot more to DF then a "A" rating.

And i have to ask: What does "A" stand for?? I belived that "A" and "R" and "M" were the same thing??? You had to be 14 to play.

I believe what they meant is that it will be more adult oriented not actually the rating AO. So I would think it would be rated M at most.

@daarco the rating A(its really AO) is for adults only but those are usually only reserved for games with EXTREME violence, sexual content, and nudity.

well "A" stands for "adult" and it means 18+ mandatory to buy. "M" means mature and it is not nearly as strict.

It also means the companies who sell this product to minors are, at least in the USA, legally culpable. While the legal punishments arent anywhere as strict, its much like selling alcohol or cigarettes to minors in the eyes of the law.  It is a finable offense, much like movie theatres are resposible for not admitting minors into "R" rated movies.

It is also the reason most stores refuse to sell or advertise "A" rated games, because they fear the legal ramifications.

As far as your 3 out of 100 stores example, thats just not how it works. A lot of avid gamers, like us, know about games as they are, or just before they are released. But beleive it or not, we are a minority. A vast majority of gamers see the product on a shelf and buy it. Or see an add in a store or magazine, and buy it.  There wont be any shelf boxes, there wont be many adds.  In fact, I doubt they could find any cmpany to publish this game in the US  with an Adult rating.

I know there is a lot more to the game than the rating, im just telling it how it is here in the US. I dont agree with it, but that doesnt make it any less true.

This game is rated "AI", meaning only AI gets to play.  (Or at least that's what I gathered from the latest dev journal.)

How long have you been following Darkfall? Darkfall is so loaded with features, the game will be everything to everybody. It will be the Wow-Killer but it will also be a niche game designed for elite players. The developers will not pander to the adult audience (see a recent dev journal for proof) but it will have plenty of blood and gore.

Nice to see that rating. A game for grownups is what we really need.

AO is Adults Only and for games that usually means only one thing in the US.....PORN!! lol

M is Mature Audiences and is a lot less strict then the AO rating. Even violent, sexually themed games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas only get a M rating.

R is Restricted and only applies to movies.

I'm sure that at the most Darkfall will only get a M Rating if or when it ever comes out. If it's just some violence and some bad language it will most likely be rated T for Teen.

This really doesn't bother me, it will just attract a few more kids - except their not abusing the M rating with boobies ;)

Cocain is banned almost anywhere in the world..........

yet somehow people still use it. The bottom line is people want what they can't have. People want what is forbidden. If you tell someone they can't have something, they will only want it more....in most cases

From what i know the game wont have any sexual references such as AOC which also has an A rating, so the language must be very strong, as well as reference to drugs, and other things.

Account has been stolen, why would someone want to steal my account?

Im pretty sure people having the ability to swear is not going to make their game a AO one lol

Look at Age of conan, all the gore, the boobs, the decapitations that has got them a 'mature' rating. All Darkfall has shown is a small bit of blood spatter if you get hit. At the most this game will get a teen rating for fantasy violence, and the ability to swear. Both of which are present in WoW btw even traces of blood on some mobs.

Edit: also the teen rating is more likely due to mobs having fantasy nudity, like for instance the Harpies in WoW, if that game gets a Teen rating there really is no reason as to why Darkfall will not have one either if it ever sees the light of day.

  • SigneSigne Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 2,524

The only reason you would give that rating in the US is if the product is centered around graphic sex, full frontal nudity and sexual and/or sadistic violence, not mature language, boobies or even  the sort of violence seen in  AoC or Hellgate: London.  I can't imagine why anything BUT a sex MMO would even want that sort of rating.

While I still don't think this game will ever get released, if by some bizarre chance it does, I don't think it'll be an AO MMO.   I think most of them are just social things, ala Second Life, and not fantasy MMOs, anyway.  Wired had an article on something called Red Light Center a while back, if you really care.

  • Entreri28Entreri28 Member Posts: 589

Just about every war game I can think of has obscene language in just about every sentence, not to mention GTA.  So how this going to give DF an AO rating, I can see an M rating, but no way it will get a AO rating.
