So what kind of play style will you adopt in terms of playing characters.
It seems people take many approaches to MMOs
I don't feel i have enough time to play too many characters.
My plan will be to play a few classes decide on a primary class to play and then give it most of my attention, likely making a few alts along the way to spice it up sometimes.
I've met ppl who only ever play 1 character, and i've met alt-o-holics who have many characters than never get past 25 or 30.
Personally I'm all for players getting what they want out of the game, however I do feel both ends of the spectrum misses out on some of the game exerpience.

heya,
my thinking is to take a warrior class as high as possible to learn the game.
As warrior type classes are most likely the easiest to learn, then branch out into magic user classes.
thanks
No alts what so ever. It usually just turns out to be the "grass is always greener on the other side" syndrome.
Just airwalking.
I tend to start playing a class which I find to be fairly fun to play, then I play it to around half the level cap and try another one. This time it tends to be a more "fitting" class for me and then I'll focus on this character quite much, but on the way of levelling I usually play a few other characters by the side. So when I reach the level cap with my "main" I usually got a few other alts that are mid-level, and then these are disregarded in favor of my main.
1 Char to level cap, with many (4+) alts trailing behind
I can understand people wanting to try out the differents careers... but to me - everyone has a play style that they enjoy and each career revolves around a different play style.
So i go find a character that works with my choice of playstyle for that game, and then i make it the best mo fo out there!
I only make alts if it will help my crafting OR if i have more playtime on my hands than required to have a kick ass main char.
I'll take one character all the way to level cap before starting a new character.
I'll take one to level cap and during the 'gearoung out' process i'll start a new alt. the alts usually serve a purpose though. trade skiller and bank storage generally. Also, sometimes some of the low end content in a game is the most fun. It's great to relive it every now and again for what it is.
I'm a healer by nature. but i also love the heavy armour so a paladin class is pefect for me from beginning to end.
Never got into a caster or rogue/thief class.
this is why alts come few and far between for me. ontop of not having enough time IRL between work/sleep/exercise for 2-3 characters.
thanks for reading
I like classes that can heal themselves.
I'll probably have several alts...im pretty flexible as far as toon play style...if I like a class I'll try it ... if I hate it I won't play it...I suspect I'll have 4 to 6 chars to work on but I'll have 1 main that'll be several levels ahead of the others most likely.

Usually I have my main and at least 4 alts anywhere from low to mid range. I loathe raiding and as that is pretty much all most games seem to offer high end I make my alts to play the games at the level they are enjoyable. Might have enjoyed raids at one time but over the years the bad experience with raider mentalities has really disgusted me. WoW is a prime example I have my main and my 6 alts. However I am on my 3rd server. If the community degrades to a sickening point on a server, some friend reroll on a new server or I just want a change I will start all over on a new server.
Interesting perspective. I could see how this would be an enjoyable method for some.
I know for me, I try and figure out which class/career I'll enjoy long term. Sometimes I hit the nail on the head the first time, and sometimes I don't.
I wonder how many people approach the game like you do, with the fundamental desire to "learn" with a character, rather than pursuing which class is their ideal match.
I generally take one character to max level with few deviations. Then I start over and do it again until I tire of the process. Most games this results in me getting about 4-6 max level characters, however I rarely stay with any of them to refine them into "PRO" status.
Along the way there might be a character or two that I lose interest in (like my level 42 Rogue in WOW) while I level up, and sometimes I really do focus on one particular character a bunch (my Minstrel in DAOC was one example, as well as my Druid in WOW)
Sometimes my son and I will level characters together, so in those instances I'll have one guy in total lock-step with his, and a 2nd that might be lower or higher depending on how well our schedules mesh. (in LotRO the meant we both had level 30's while I also had a level 24 for his down times)

I usually level my main quick with no alts when I start. When I am done and my main starts doing other things like raiding and such i then will start alts. Normally I do 2 or so alts when I start to see what else I like most normally my main is a class that was in high demand in other games but with WAR I am hoping I can have some fun and make whatever I want .
I think endgame options is one of the big selling points for Mythic's RvR based games. killing endless "stupid cpu controlled mobs gets old. Raid scripting adds some spice, but many ppl dont have the time or energy for that.
with RvR there is always osmething to fight for, always a way to contribute.
IN FACT i love how you can contribute to the overall scheme even at lower levels. This is huge in my book. How each tier effects the tier after it....its just cool
With this game not only having a server cap but also a realm cap, i supect it will be pretty alt heavy.
I guess it comes down to wether you want to wait in a serverqueue to get to play your main, or you rather just go play that alt of your right now.
I think for some players, "the grass is greener" model is true. They seem to be always on the quest for "something else"
On the other hand, I've found that in two of my MMO experiences I've played one character up with a few levels of cap before i finally realized or admitted to meself that it wasn't the ideal match.
I went on to play another char up to level cap and had much more fun. Example was EQII I played a Templar up to 65 (of 70), then started an Assassin and enjoyed that playstyle a lot.
In WAR I plan on trying my best to pick a class i'll like for a long time from the beginning, but i know sometimes classes don't turn out like you think they will.
I do have a serious altoholic problem . I have never got a MMO character to max level. And I’ve been playing CoX since it first came out. And I played WoW for 2 years.
I have been getter better lately, but I haven’t been sticking with games long enough.
One thing I enjoyed from WoW was playing every race to lvl 10 or 15. I'm an old Warcraft I, II and III player, so learning about the backstories they wrote for each was much fun, even if i didn't like the class i started.
I like to focus on 1 character and have 1-2 alt(s). In WAR this is perfect as I get to have one character for each army of the realm. Then much later down the road when I feel I have played the characters to death, I will make three characters on the opposite realm on another server. But never more then 3 characters at the time. It just gets too much for me somehow, I need the focus on just a few characters.

It depends on who I'm playing with more than what game I'm playing.
If I don't know anyone, I have lots of alts and never make it past 30. The exception is if there is a reward for reaching max level, as in CoH.
If I'm playing with friends, I play one character enough to keep up, and keep a large stable of alts for when I'm not grouping.
Of course, games that have less lower-level content tend to dampen my altaholic urges.
I usually play a tank/warrior class as my main character (in this case probably Blackguard ). When I get tired of tanking or attempting to solo, I usually play an alt to take a break from my duties. At that point I usually go back to my main and play some more. So I usually have a high level (if not max) main and 1 or 2 alts to put some variety in my gameplay.

This time round I will have main that I concentrate on. I made the mistake in WoW of continuoulsy leveling toons resulting in 4 level 70s and another in the low 60s. I think I missed out on a lot of endgame content and had 4 mediocre geared characters.
Assuming I buy WAR, I'll probably try out a Shadow Hunter and a Witch Elf to level 20 or so to see which I prefer then stick with my choice to endgame. It would be nice to be something other than a perma-noob for a change.
I normally try to play at least 1 character per game to level cap. But making the decision to do that or play another way really depends on the game.
If the game is interesting and enjoyable enough, I'll grind 1 toon to cap at a time.
If I've played the game to a point where I need an extra challenge, then I'll multi-box and grind several toons to cap or at least a relatively high level (then finish them off 1 at a time).
...
If a game is a long, long grind from 1-cap, then I may rotate alts. This keeps each character in 'rested xp' mode when I do get to play them. This mode has it's good side and bad. It's bad because you essentially repeat content with one toon and then immediately repeat it with your atls... as many times as you have alts. But, it's good because you can get through them and then not look back for quite a while... until you are ready to do another alt, after you've burned these first 3-4 to cap.
...
I enjoyed WoW's BG system that allowed for a break to pvp at ever x9 level (19, 29, 39, etc.,..). That helped break up the linear grind, for me at least. It was also additional incentive to hit instances for gear.
...
There are games that don't offer 'alts'. Or they just offer 1-2, if they do... SWG being one of them. preCU, I would just grind 1 toon to full-template, then get an alt and do it again. I wanted to have a few different temp'd characters/prof's at all times. Then you can add Jedi unlocks in there and whatever into that mix.
...
I'll pick a class; that I think will be fun. Then I'll level them to the cap and raid. In my downtime, not raiding, I'll slowly level up an alt. I really prefer to learn the ins and outs of my main and get as good as I can with that class. The only game, that I had a lot of alts was UO. That was more to be as self sufficient as possible. I had only two fighting chars and the rest were crafters.
The only exception to this was with DAoC. I just leveled up one char and never did any alts. RvRing was way too much fun and at the time there wasn't any real downtime in RvR. You could always find a fight somewhere. I'd imagine WAR will be the same.
Usually level up my first character before looking at playing an alt.
Can't say i've ever had more than 2-3 characters in any mmorpg i've played so far
I will play all classes that interest me up to level 10-15 (if the max is indeed 40), maybe a couple times till I decide on which one I want as my main. Then I will level him to max with small breaks here and there to level up alts.
I will continue to play my main even after max to do everything I possibly can with him. Get gear, cash, Tome of knowledge unlocks ect while leveling alts when I need a change. Once I feel completely finished with the main I will level multiple alts and be kinda picky on what I do/dont do with thoes alts. Hopefully by that time there is either more for my main to do or a new class ect from expansions.
