The best dog to own?

Since there has been talk of animal going around, I was just wondering about some dogs.

Now, I've got a Longhaired Dachshund. Also known as a Wiener dog. It is one of the most obnoxious dogs alive. It sits around, gets fat and barks at the idea of someone at the door. It is very territorial and has a high pitched bark. We don't walk it very often, it comes in and out of the house as it pleases.

I was just wondering, for future referance, which type of dog I should get. I am looking for a tame, easily trained dog that wont chew my house up and wont pee on everything it sees. Can anyone recommend a dog that would fit this vague discription?

I used to have a Golden Retriever, but he tore the whole house up one time when we lect him alone. We got rid of him the first week or something.

I'm also wondering if it is better to buy a dog that has been trained already, or a puppy that needs its own training. Please give me your input on the whole dog situation.

I currently have 1 dog and 3 cats.

I have a Cocker Spaniel, hes pretty chill as in lazy and doesn't really get hyperimage(which I hate).  IMO he was really easy to train and he also gets along fine with my cat as well.....so if you're looking for a chill dog then go with a Cocker cause they aren't that big at all.

You want something gentle/tame/easy to train ..well thats an easy one get a golden lab retreiver. There extremely gentle , easy to train and very friendly. It hasnt pooped/peed/destroyed or done anything obnoxious for the past like umm 8 years i think actually longer i think. It only did those when it was a puppy and not for very long. So there a good choice... i think they cost between 600-1000$ somewhere in there..or more possibly

The next dog im getting is a pug. Small, and not hairy. Very docile but playful, and easy to train(so im told).

the best dog I ever had was a great dane, I could only refer to him as the gentle giant. However, the drawback is, short lifespan. I had Thor 8 years, and he was the biggest baby that exsisted! To children, others, cats, other household pets etc.

However, any pet you have, if you don't want chewing, peeing in the house etc you need to train.

They don't know unless they are taught what the rules of the house are. And, I assure you, it doesn't happen in a week :) regardless of what dog you get.

The only problem we had with the Golden Retriever was that it would tear up the house if we didn't keep it in a cage. How can you prevent this without keeping it in a cage?

I don't want to have to lock my dogs up in a cage unless I'm taking it to the vet. Is it possible to have a perfect dog that you don't have to cage up?

    A pitbull

They are very nice dogs as long as you get them from a breeder and not adopted. They are very calm and they only get mildly protective with strangers.

I also like Corgys [sp?]. They are the kind of dogs that you saw in cowboy bebop. They shed alot though but they are nice. Too fat to play catch with though. heh

This topic is based on opinion. My favorite dog (i would like to own) is a Siberian Huskey or a Shiba (like the dog in Tenchu image) or a Shikoku.

I love my corgie, Frankie, he's the type that has a tail, not Welsh. And to relate corgies to some form of entertainment, Ein from Cowboy Bebop was a corgie. My Frankie definitely isn't as smart as Ein, but they are the cutest puppies and are lots of fun to play with, not too energetic, but still like to run around.

Yeah they would rather lay on the cool tile on a hot summer day than jump on your lap. Good dogs though. They have an interesting bark too.

What the hell? You gave the dog away because you were too lazy to train it? You dont take the dog for a walk? no wonder its fat, if i was left in a cage all day id tear your house up too. Instead of giving the dog away, get off your ass and train the damn thing. The majority of dogs will behaveyou jsut have to teach them rights and wrongs.

I hope you're not talking to me. Because you have a few things mixed up. My parents gave my dog away because he tore the place up. We tried to train it obviously. We do take our current dog for walks, which is not fat, but not perfect. We just don't take him regularly. We used to take Nikki (the golden retriever that tore the place apart) for walks so he wasn't fat. I guess we didn't expect so much from a dog. Our family was too busy for him. We never left him in his cage during the day. We left him in the cage when we were all gone.

You initially said you only had the golden for a week, and for training time that isnt exactly a long time. We got some stupid little karren terrier (or however its spelled i dunno) daschshund mix about 3 years ago, and for the first 6 months it was a big retard, but we kept with (heh, we wanted to get rid of it after 2 weeks but we didnt :p) anyway, its still pretty retarded but it doesnt run away anymore and it listens pretty good.

BTW i know exactly what you mean about it barking, its so annoying, ours does it too and for no reason it just randomly runs to the door because it thinks it hears somethign and starts barking for like 5 minutes.

Maybe i got the wrong impression from your initial post though about the golden, im not sure.

I didn't mean a week. We had Nikki since it was a pup. About two years, We've had Casey for about 7 or 8 years now. He's an olden.

Yeah Dachshunds are freaken annoying when it comes to barking. But we love him all the same...... I think.

You should look into getting a Rottweiler, make sure you get it as a puppy though. If raised properly and trained they can be very very nice dogs to keep, they are of course the best looking dogs too lol.

Siberian Huskies are cool too, expensive though.. around £800 i think thats about 1000 dollarsish.

I've got a Collie at the moment, he's crazzzy. Eats all my mail, he ripped up my birth certificate when i got it through the post..

My personal favorite breed is the German Shepherd.  Highly intelligent, powerful and very distinctive.  I have a 2 year old female and she is a lot of fun image  She is so smart and I swear she can understand most of what I say to her...LOL.

Runner up breeds for me would be Chihuahuas (I have 2 of these too), Pugs or a Husky (perhaps with some wolf blood in it)

Bottom line is that all dogs are at their core the same.  You can have a ferrocious poodle and a lazy and lovable pit bull.  Dogs are what you make them image

I've owned a coon hound, a blood hound, a siberian huskie, a beagle, a mutt named Poncho Via, and a black lab/golden retriever mix named Brewster. Of all those dogs, Poncho the mutt and Brewster the lab mix were the best behaved, smartest, and fun dogs I've owned. Here is a pic of Brewster

    image

The coon dog and blood hound were kewl dogs too, but they were more suited for the outdoors as was the Beagle. The Siberian Huskey looked kewl but was hard to train, and he was miserable in the summer here in Georgia. The mutt, Poncho, was the funniest dog I ever owned and really too smart for his own good. The lab mix, Brewster,  was just as smart and probably my favorite. He was house trained within a week and only had 2 accidents during that week. He was good around people, kids and other animals, except birds...he went crazy around birds. I had a friend that would bring over his parrot and that had to stop because Brewster probably took 10 years off that bird's life. He did all kinds of tricks and had a good personality. The only thing about it that sux is I had to put him to sleep this past year because he had inoperale cysts on his brain.

Any dog takes time and patience to train. You also have to give them attention every day or else they will get weird on you. Dogs are pack animals. Different breeds differ in how active they are and how much time you have to spend with them. Also, some breeds are much easier to train and discipline than others.

In the end though, it is all about what kind of dog you like and then choosing a good pup to raise that comes from good stock so as to have the least chance of developing serious health problems and unwanted aggressive behavior.

I don't know much about dogs. Not too interested in them. But if i had to pick, i would say a Siberian Husky.

     image

I would probably buy one. I'm checking my city hall to ask wether owning exotic pets is legal (i'm thinking of buying a tiger image) and if it's illegal i will probably stick with the Siberian Husky.
