Im worried that my computer wont handle Guild Wars, and I have been waiting for it for so long. This is what I have: Pentium 4, Windows XP but I only have 22.3 GB left in my hardrive. I don't even know what video card I have. I ran the E3 demo of GW and the menu screen was so laggy. Please help me if possible Ms. Gray or other people who are experts on this stuff.

If you would like to know the specific spec's of your computer and you have windows xp, hit start then run, and when the command line window comes up type "dxdiag" then click on OK.  when the window comes up give it time to read your entire system and then browse through the tabs to find out what your computer has on it and what its minimums are.  Video Card info I believe is on the second tab.  Once you have all the info you need compare it to the minimum requirements that are posted on the GW homepage.

System Specs from Game FAQ on GW homepage

final system requirements have not yet been determined, but currently we have set the following as minimum system specifications for those involved in our Guild Wars Alpha Test:

    • Windows XP/2000/ME/98
    • 800 MHz Pentium III or equivalent
    • 256 MB RAM
    • ATI Radeon 8500 or GeForce 3 or 4 MX with 32MB of video memory
    • 500 MB hard drive space
    • Internet connection
    • DirectX 8.0

    * One thing though, do not change anything in the dxdiag window!

Well, that means that you have an onboard video card. Basicly your video processing will be run off of your motherboard. I would suggest that you get a video card otherwise you will have really choppy gameplay if it even lets you get past the startin screen. Graphics takes alot of processing and calculations, so if your video is running off of your motherboard it will increase the load on your processer exponentially.

My avatar means Year of the Dog, chinese zodiac. How did you know?

Ah, nice, I see DaShiz has posted the system specs. Thanks for doing that, DS. In fact, you can find both required and recommended system specs here. Guild Wars plays well on system that are considered very moderate by today's standards.

I agree with the recommendation that a new video card would be a good choice, and you can find one that run very well for less than $100. As for installation, well, if you don't want to do it yourself, many stores offer installation for free, or for a moderate price. So if you have concerns about your ability to install you could consult the experts or ask amongst your friends for someone with experience with this sort of thing.

Good luck and we'll see you soon in Guild Wars!

I played it on 2 different comps back at E3. One was a p4, 3.0 gig, 1500 ram and a radeon 9800 pro. It ran sweet ( obviously). The other, was a dell laptop. 2.6 gig, some junk nvidia card and 256 ram. It was pretty playable on that even.image

Well, I'm sure you could convince her to get it for you if you trick her into thinking that it will increase the overall performance of the computer and allow for the computer to last longer and accomplish many more processes in less time. It shouldn't be that hard. Also you have quite a while before the game actually comes out so you could save up for it.

Well anyway, here is a link to a page with ATI 9600XT video cards for sale. It is at NewEgg.com which is a very reliable and cheap distributor, and as well the 9600XT is very cheap considering it excellent quality and power.

    Here is a link on a fairly decent walkthrough on how to install a new video card;

I understand completely. But there is a way to test, and you can judge how your computer handles the game for free: Come to our World Preview Event on October 29 - 31! Simply download the game client (we'll have a list of sites offering it on www.guildwars.com very soon) and you can play free for three days.

This will give you a good idea of whether your system can handle the game, and you'll have a ton of fun.

Thanks for all your help everyone. My brother said that he thinks my computer might be able to handle Guild Wars because he has been playing doom 3 on it which probably requires a lot more of that computer stuff, and it ran quite well with a little lag. He said that because we have DSL connection.

If he is playing Doom 3 on it, then yea I wouldn't doubt that it would handle Guild wars, but of course the world preview event will give you the real answer you are looking for.

Thanks, one more question, is Guild Wars smaller or larger then Warcraft 3? If it is smaller then I can play it fine I think because I can run Warcraft 3 perfectly.

Well, from looking at the system requirements of each of the games it would seem that Guild Wars will take up less space. Guild Wars has a recommended hard drive space available of at least 500 MB, Link! Where as Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos requires a hard drive of at least 700 MB, Link! That is also not considering if you have the Frozen Throne expansion which itself requires at least 550 MB of storage space in addition to the original game storage requirements, Link! So I think it is safe to say that yes Guild Wars will be a little bit smaller in taking up space on your hard drive.

Kind of on a side note my current Guild Wars file folder takes up only about 291 MB of hard drive space right now and I usually start it up every once in a while so that it downloads any patch work. Though it is not the full client per say, it is only the E3 for eveyone client, it still DL's stuff every once in a while. So it may not take up the recommened 500 MB for the full game, but at some point down the line it may, that is why it is recommeneded.

I know how you feel, my parents aren't exactly HAPpY when i tell them i wanna get a new video card for my computer.  I mean, i was lucky they let me buy a Geforce 2 two years ago and i'm still living with that video card and that is SLIGHTLY less than the predicted required specs on the official site, So i'm a bit nervous about whether my computer could run GW decently or AT ALL...but yea, Main thing is, i know how you feel.  $50 for a Geforce 2 and my dad thinks i'm set for life image

Edit: Oops, i just noticed the 2nd page -_-'  well, i'm replying to I_killa on the first page image
