why doesn't this game have an open beta?

or at least pre order = get into testing..
This game is coming out next month... Is there going to be an open playing period from now till the 20'th of next month?

It is widely believed (though unconfirmed) that this weekends PvP beta event is their stress testing / open beta. Unfortunately if you haven't already signed up its too late.
I hope if the PvP weekend is indeed the stress test/open beta that they lift the NDA within a couple days after. I said earlier and will say it again, I hope this game does well. The industry needs it. Personally I plan on waiting to hear what the masses say after its launched but maybe once the NDA is lifted (assuming the talk is good from testers) it will hush up the doomsayers.
I understand a person wanting there game to do good, but as a gamer, paticurlaly(sp?) an MMO gamer I really hope we get more than 1 or 2 options soon

From what I can see that early acess to play the game for NA is the 17th of may for pre order players and 20th of may for eu players, with servers going live for everyone else on the 20th and 23rd of may.
This means that the game must be gold and finalised a week or 2 before these dates to sort out the shipping and the final games to all the regions. Which means of open beta is to start it is going to start within 1 week or 2.
So we actually have less than 1 month to the finilased version of the game, so whatever people are seeing in general and maybe open beta will be very very close to the final game eversion they will be releasing and going live with.
From what I have seen on the internet and many beta leaks on other forums, it dosnt look like aoc is in any shape to be finalsed in 2 weeks time. Alot of beta leakers are saying the game needs another delay and 3-5 months more work.
If you had a company that was making a game, an MMORPG. You have a couple choices, open beta or no open beta. You have an open beta to show off your game (and polish it) to the gaming audience. No strings, no nothing, if someone has a computer you can download and try out the game.
It seems most companies use the open beta as a normal practice. Heck, it's advertising at it's finest. Come and try out our product before you buy it. It really doesn't get any better than that now does it? Try before you buy ..... what a concept.
If a company chooses not to take advantage of an open beta they might as well be shooting red flags into the air. It just simply looks bad ..... very bad. Puts me in mind of a used car salesman that won't let you test drive a car before you buy it. Fishy it is.
Funcom has not announced an open beta date. That is all we got right now. They have plenty of time to announce one. It would be almost silly of them not to .....if they don't, they most certainly have something to hide. I hope that is not the case. : )

Though I definitely wasn't going to buy this without having tried an open beta first (past experience with FC and a lot of suspicious leaks), I was glad they at least offered a pvp weekend. Being as limited as I think it will be, I doubt it could sway my willingness to risk buying it, but at least its something. At the very least, wecan confirm whether the combat system will be any fun. And we can play around with the character creator.

Some mmo's don't do open beta until a week to around a month before the game launches. As for AoC, someone posted this link yesterday and it seems open beta might start on or around 5/2/08 https://register.ageofconan.com/downtime/
Name one MMO that hasn't had a large patch on the first day it is up. They all have them, and it is too patch the gold version to the one they spent the last 2 weeks fixing. They have a month, and most of the complaints are 'minor' technical bugs and polish while they have been working on larger bugs and deeper flaws in the system. The game can be much more polished by the time it goes retail.

The pre-order people are able to buy into the live game 3 days early for 5 dollars/euros. apart from that no open beta.
The game must have gone gold already as t will take 4-6 weeks to press the discs and distribute them, hence the big 1st day patch to get it completely up to date.

For instance you can say everything you want good about WoW. I know it is a mindless item grind that my 11 year old sister can play in it's hardest moments. So to know that you love this game, and support it while bashing other games tells me that... I shouldn't really listen to anything you have to say when it comes to your opinion on games.

rofl credibility on this site? LMAO good one. This site is known for having the least cridiblity thats why if u wanted proper information regarding games you would check other sites out.
Proves my point, I say whsiper me about aoc, and then I get people saying you like wow what do you know. Wow sucks u know nothing. Yeah sounds real credible to me.
Open betas are a marketing tool to show off a game. I personally believe that an open beta is not helping the development process in any kind of way. I've been part in some open and closed betas and the difference in the quality of user feedback is like day and night. The majority of players that participate in an open beta does so to "play" the game and to see if it is their thing or not, and not to test it for its functionality.
The true testing is done either in closed beta, technical beta or with internal testing. IMO open betas are just there to hype a game. But seeing that AoC already has a 7.4 on MMORPG there is certainly no need to hype this game that much more

Closed beta = a more controlled enviroment from the devs standpoint (NDA) and most testers contribute to testing the game, finding bugs, reporting them instead of going to the forums and whining about the bugs like most do within an open beta enviroment
IMO open betas are uselss, if you want to check out the game before buying wait for the trial period which in most mmo's will have a month or two after the release.
Also.. many game companies are trying to go away from Open Beta's, and many are going towards hiring professional testers all the way up until stress testing. Like it was said before Open Betas are a large stress test + marketing tool.
By asking people to whisper you about AOC implies you are willing to break the NDA and share information about the game you have no business doing so. Which means you lack any sort of credibility.
They probably won't have an open beta in the truest form, expect it to be by invitation only, perhaps only to pre-order holders or those who sub to file planet or something.

You proved that a) you refuse to see the point I am making. The point that people who like WoW are possibly not going to like any given other game due to its differences from WoW (which is not a bad thing, it is just human nature).
And b) that you are willing to break an agreement you made with a company in order to give off your opinion on an unfinished game based on your experiences and your tastes....which you have made obvious.
It's not about "you like WoW, what do you know" , it's about "you like WoW, so your tastes are different than mine".
This is my final attempt to point out to you that tastes differ and that, as valued as your opinion might be to some people, it will be worthless to others. That's not flaming, that's not bashing, that's a simple fact of life. I like Sushi and Sashimi, would you then eat Fugu (a poisonous fish prepares in a special way in Japan), because I say it tastes good and like it? I hate Minivans. I despise them. Would you come to me for advice on which Minivan to buy if you were in the position to want one?
