I have wanted to try this game out since beta, even though it has all the bad things against it. If I were to try it out, would now, with the server merge be the best time to do so?

I would wait until transfers are done. People are stressing over it, there are bound to be problems and it is uncertain how many will leave instead of transfer.
My suggestion would be - wait for a month and/or get a buddy key.
If $50 is burning a hole in your pocket you are probably better off trying AoC in a month or so. What is there to lose? Try a borked game or potentially borked game, I would opt for the later.
Give it a go, it's a good time to join up. Dont believe all that you read in the forums. The game is good fun....simple as that. If you dont wanna get ganked, stay out of the red zones....if you do want to get ganked, join up with 5 others and have probably the best pvp experience since the early fleet battles in EvE. Also dont believe that the servers are empty, Roberts Server has always had a healthy community playing alot of the day and night.
Cant stand WoW fanboys slating every other mmo out there....its peresonal preference at the end of the day. And if you dont like it....quit!!

As stated above the servers are in the middle of merging right now, but don't let that stop you. If you can find a buddy key get it and download it and see for yourself if you like it or not.
Wait for AoC. AoC will totally kill this game, since the PvPers left on PoBS (trully fanboys) will left the game to join AoC (too bad for AoC but worst for PoBS).
Before shelling out $40 for the box get a buddy key and try it out first. The whole game is a gankfest and so many people have quit they had to merge eleven servers into four.
I will be on there tonight to begin trying out this game. Is Roberts the best server to join or which one should I look at joining?
Create a character on each of the remaining servers and see which one fits your style of play. Remember however, that you can only create chars of 1 nation per server i.e Spanish on Antigua, Pirate on Rackham ect. If you dont like the nation that you choose, delete and reroll.

Okay, that is what I will do. I just realized that Roberts is a European server so that may not be the way for me to go.
Roberts, although listed as a EU server, is still in the U.S., and the American players on there say that performance isn't any different that the others. Don't discount it just because it says EU. I don't play on Roberts myself, but if it is the server that fits your style, play on it.

What is does have, is that it's become the unofficial international server and is the only one that's busy 24/7. It has a mixture of US and EU players so probably has the best chance of surviving out of any of the four remaining servers.
