Having to subscribe to fileplanet is a kick in the nuts already...but yes lets hope it goes all well and they might consider throwing us some free keys as beta progresses.

You just have to think of it in terms of business. Funcom can:
A) Pay X amount of money to Fileplanet to host their massive game files and give them out to free users. X in this case would be large considering if they expect 50k people + to download a 6-12gb file it would cost them quite a large amount of money.
When an Open Beta is there to stress test the game, and not there to let people get a free preview, and they will already have a number of stress tests including this PVP weekend it doesn't make sense for them to shell out that much money. It only takes 2-5,000 people to fill up a server and test it as stressfully as they need.
I know they could do it themselves, host a torrent, etc. etc. but if you could only imagine how busy they will be wrapping up as many minor bugs as possible you would feel light headed. I've been on projects at crunch time where we slept one or two hours a night for what seemed like weeks. I just hope that they really polish up what they have and I would take them outsourcing this hassle to someone else in a heartbeat if it means a more polished final product.
Remember, we don't deserve anything from them in terms of an open beta. It is a privelige not a right.
