Please don't knock Funcom yet.

I see alot of threads expecting/demanding AoC to have open beta now. Since there is no scheduled free play time called "open beta" like Lotro, I see alot are upset there is not this in place yet.

Please be patient. Funcom is slowly opening up, and I am for sure there is more to come besides the upcoming 'heads will roll" pvp

I know alot like myself will not purchase a MMO anymore before playing it, but the trials or what ever Funcom has in the works will come.

And please remember, beta= testing, not free play time.

*sigh* Maybe you should read some of those threads. There is a scheduled "open beta" and it's been listed a few times in all the threads you saw but didn't read.

You are quite correct, an open beta does not have to be free.

Sorry but that fileplanet beta is not an open beta no matter how many times they want to try and spin it that way. If they don't want to have an open beta that's fine but don't have a closed beta expansion and call it open beta either.

5 years in the making you would have thought they would have thought out their Beta sign up process and Partnerships a little better..

WoW handled there 'open beta' the same exact way. Guess what. SO DID EQ2!!

It is open beta in that anyone who is willing to sub to fileplanet gets the chance to. Most of you people don;t get it. I'm an annual Fileplanet subscriber/gamespy/IGN/VN - have been for over 5-6 years now. Being let int to MANy various betas is just part of their program. I get in to MANY betas each year, few of which I actually download and check out. Most are twirly asian games that are pointless. However, When EQ2, WoW, VG, AoC betas came around, fileplanet was always a pretty sure way of getting one.

I know what you are talking about.  Fileplanet is always giving exclusive contests to their Founder's Club members.  I've been on Fileplanet for five years or longer, and I've NEVER had to pay anything for an open beta key.  All you had to do was be a member.  They saw AoC, $$$$$$$$$$$$, and came up with this elaborate scam.  I hope it works out well financially for them.  The sad part is, Funcom is the one losing potential customers from this.  Not Fileplanet.  Not EIDOS.  Funcom.  Every time a person gets pissed off at something EIDOS or another partner, the company paying the price is FUNCOM.  They are the ones losing business.

Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

If you want to pay fileplanet for the chance to get in on betas then thats fine. Not everyone is interested in doing so. Letting 50k hand picked people into beta with a NDA still in place is not open beta that's the only point I was making. Yes I know they said they would lift the NDA "at some point" but that doesn't tell me anything. I'm sure at some point there will be a free trial for this game just like every other MMO. There are many different way to do betas it's not like all betas have to be run through fileplanet. They choose to do it cause they make money off it. That's fine I just choose not to pay to test games which would be the only use I'd get from fileplanet.

I paid to get into SWG beta... and I still have their coaster (beta CD) to prove it.
