Can anyone recommend a game for a "Collector" of "things"?

I'm sort of new to MMORPG's, but I'm very experienced in single-player PC RPG's. I've essentially
played every one released in the last 10 years.... I discovered in many single-player games the ability to
"collect" many kinds of objects, both mundane worthless things and expensive special things like
armor, weapons, magic things, jewelry, etc..... For example, in Morrowind, I built my own house using
a mod (their constructor program) and I then enjoyed filling my beatiful castle with immense collections
of things: I had a collection of all suits of armor in game (yes, ALL the armor in the game), all weapons,
all books, all alchemy ingredients, all "cool" tableware, all jewelry....the list goes on and on. The game
world of Morrowind is so large, I was able to assemble a huge assemblage of "collections" from many
places. Surely there are online games with lots of cool "things" that would make a Collector drool, yes?

So....are there any games that allow a player character to "collect" things? I realize this issue is
related to the issue of player "housing". To collect, you have to have a place to store and, preferably,
to display one's collections. And, yes, I want a house to keep my "collections". Can anyone comment or
help me here?
Please be gentle. I'm a newbie to online games. ::::02::
I'm assuming that you can do in online games what you can do in single-player games. Is this a wrong
assumption? I hope not.

AC1. Housing, completely random loot (you'll rarely find the same exact loot generated item) and lot's of little quest items. Most of my item slots are filled with quest stuff that I have no use for. But since I spent my time doing the quests I like to keep the reward even if I don't really need it.

    Ultima Online.

Unfortunatly, that is what this game has degraded to. Collecting Rares and the whole "whoever has the most toys wins" mentality. You arent a somebody in UO unless you have a huge house filled with rare and expensive items.

This game caters to people just like you. People who like to collect stuff that is called rare and doesnt really do anything. Also people who like collecting the best armor/weaps, etc.

This type of gameplay disgusts me, which is why I quit UO, but hey, if you like it, go for it.

Yeah you often see people selling whole collections of stuff in that game, or buying/selling Items needed for collections.     The dev people make alot of things for these people... like snowglobes, bells that make different noises, cakes, miniature houses, statues that make noises, etc.

    Asheron's Call 1.

They have SO many items in that game its insane. Someone once had pics of a long-running collection of every quest/non-loot gen item in the game. He was at about 95% I think and it was a whole page or more of little icons.

They even have items made for no more than hooking in your house: Snowglobe, vace/flowers, tiger-rug, coffin that opens when clicked and goes BOOoOOOoo, piece of green crap with flies around it, books on pedestals that glow, etc. Most loot-gen and quest weapons can be hooked, Only things that cant be hooked are most body-armors and "new" items introduced in a very recent patch or items unable to be dropped. I could go on and on, but thats just the stuff I had in my cottage.

Finding a house in AC1, might be a challenge tho. You can easily get an apartment which only has 3 hooks image, or wait for a cottage to become available which has like 50 and you can use 30 of those ata time. Villas are expensive and have....lots more hooks. Mansions are for guilds only and have so many goddamn hooks that a certain rare item was collected by the largest guild almost until he had every copy. (Yep, Zuizide's pack-cow fetish image) AC1 is my favorite MMOG to date, but I guess you can tell already image

If collecting things, and displaying them in your castle is your favorite playstyle, then you will have a nice chance loving and liking Star Wars Galaxies aka SWG. SWG currently is the MMORPG with the best ever player housing, crafting, etc... Plus you can allow every player in the game to come inside and tour your house with no chance of them being able to take things. SWG also has the most housing styles. Houses range in size from small, to MASSIVE, HUGE, M-A-N-S-I-O-N-S. Mansions better than many real life mansions.

The mega-huge mansions are big enough that you can almost become lost in them. Complete with a full basement, full balcony, 2 to 3 floores. If you decide to build your own house (persue the architect profession in SWG) or play another player to build it for you - you can customize the floorplan of your house in SWG. Decide where the rooms will go, where the staircases will go, and much more. Hang paintings, customize furnishings, have chairs, beds, bookcases, even set up your personal store that will sell items for you while you are offline, or off adventuring.

You can also decide where to build your house in SWG. Build it on a beach, island, deep in a forest, atop a mountain, in a desert, by a lake, near a river, etc.. etc... There many different planets in SWG to visit and choose to build your house on.

Anarchy Online is a nice 2nd choice for someone with your playstyle. In AO every player has an apartment. (It's an ok size. Maybe equal in floorspace to a small house in SWG.)

Also if you're considering one of the upcoming games, EQ2 has exactly what you're looking for. It has a "Collections" line of lil mini-quest game things. Basically scattered throughout the game world are various collectable items. As it stands now there are 25-27 or so such collections. Forexample you have the "Coins of the Fallen Empires" collection or the "Butterflies of Norrath" collection and it works exactly as you would imagine, when you stumble upon the items for said collection they get added to your collection. When you have collected them all you have "finished" the quest for it and get a new title you can use.

Just something else that EQ2 has thats not really storyline driven but mainly just there to give the player more options, more things to do, more depth, etc.

SWG I had two huses full of stuff and my bank account was full of 100 items...there was a packrats paradise.

I love SWG for all the display options of your loot. I love walking into random player made art-gallery's, weapon gallery's and stuff like that. You should definitely give it a try. You can try it for free for 14 days until August 31st on Gamespot.

I'd say that is a game feature that I enjoy also. SWG has the best that I have seen, but that's all. I had houses full of stuff that I couldn't bring myself to sell.

    I am Saranth.

DAoC - 1 year off and on
    AC2 - 4 months

FFXI - 2 months or less
CoH - 2 months or less
Horizons - 2 months or less
EnB - 3 months or less

Pristontale - 1 week so far

Anarchy Online (AO) have lot's of different kind items (according Funcom more than 160.000 items). Unfortunately AOs houses have very limited item capability and most of items don't have unique 3D shape. This means that you can't show your "trophies" for other players so easily. (AO's new Alien Invasion expansion pack is going to improve housing - not sure how yet.)

Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) have great housing system and most items have unique looking 3D shapes. But SWG doesn't have much items - maybe something like 500-1.000.

UO,EQ1 and AC1 might have more items than AO have - but UO's client is mostly 2D (however housing is great), EQ1 doesn't have housing and AC1's graphics are poor (I have heard that Turbine is going to make expansion to AC1 that improves graphics).

Many items in AO are 100% useless junk. If AO does have 160,000 items, a new player has access to maybe 5,000 items. Many items are only obtainable at high level, able to be purchased only with tons of money, or one must be in an elite guild to get the drops. Most of the junk items are not even fit to be displayed as tropies. Apartments in AO can display roughly 20 to 50 items at the most. So even IF all 160,000 items were nice looking... it does not matter. And for players to be able to come into your apartment you have to give them a key. And yes, many items also do not have a 3D picture when placed inside your apartment. There is just an icon representing an item on the floor or wall.

Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) have great housing system and most items have unique looking 3D shapes. But SWG doesn't have much items - maybe something like 500-1.000.

ALL items have 3D shapes. SWG has the best ever housing system. Not just a great one. Basements, 2-3 stories, balconies, some mansions even intend for you to be able to go onto the rooftop. SWG has far, far, more than 1,000 items! LOLOL! The game itself has roughly 50,000 + items. There are junk items, but nowhere as much junk items as AO. SWG has been out for 1 solid year. AO has been out for 2 solid years. A small house in SWG will be able to hold as much and maybe a bit more than an apartment in AO. A mansion in SWG can easily hold anywhere from 100 to roughly 500, to roughly 1,000 items on display, depending on how big the items are. (I once spent 1 hour checking out another player's basement LOL!)

And a new player has access to 5,000 or more items. It is not too hard to make them, or to buy them. Many missions give them out regularly. (More regularly than in AO even with the customer made program that "hacks" missions looking for specific items.)

UO,EQ1 and AC1 might have more items than AO have - but UO's client is mostly 2D (however housing is great), EQ1 doesn't have housing and AC1's graphics are poor (I have heard that Turbine is going to make expansion to AC1 that improves graphics).

I do not think a gamer new to MMORPGs, who likes collecting items, would want to play super old MMORPGs. Especially a 2D one. AC1 graphics are the same as EQ1 before EQ1 updated them. EQ1 newly updated graphics come close to AO. Even then, AC1 graphics are not sooo poor that it takes away from the gameplay.

I'd give my thumbs up for this topic for AO, too. I remember the first weeks I played the game getting dizzy be the sheer number of items available.
As pointed out above the problems in AO include the not fully 3D modells of the items as well as the limited stocks you can keep. At least in your house ... there is a vault (aka bank) systems that allows you to keep greater stocks.
Funcom promised to address these issues in their new expansion pack starting in a few days.
