Howcome their hasnt been a major title that has tried to combine the two genres.. Im thinking something like eve. Big huge space to play in and minning would be the dominate factor
Fun Fact: Sony Online Entertainments Corporate Office is located on the 10th level of hell in dante's inferno the catholic church censored this part of the book and deemed it to horrible to be written...

Cause most devs feel its not time for that and are into the RPG side of right now but we will see some mmorts some time int eh future.
Playing: Everthing
Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.
I have played every MMO that has ever come out.
An mmorts wouldn't work very well simply for the fact that when one person is offline, their units and structures are completely vulnerable. In a mmorpg the player has only one character at a time so it's no problem for them to log out. In an rts, the units are many and have to remain active even without the player.

The Guild.
Teams would fix most of that. Ex: you defend my stuff, i defend your stuff. Or teams share attackable stuff.
Back to the op, there are a few mmorts games out there, and until one is a success you wont see any big money ones. Personally I think fps is better mixed with rts than rpg. (since rpg = grind) Check out savage to see a good rts/fps.
mmorts games ive played,
please add to the list if you know anymore

I don't think it would have that many players
I would like to see more mmorts games as well, I believe they can work, they have all been done very badly though. If a MMORTS would come out that was polished and enjoyable it has every potential of making WoWs 10 million players look like nothing.
How many people play star craft still for instance just for the multi-player component ? same with CnC, War 40k etc If a mmorts would come along now and appeal to RTS gamers it would have NO competition and has every possiblity of being incredibly successful.
There is going to be an attempt at the first tripple A MMORTS in the form of Kingdom under fire. Which is a cross between MMO, RTS, and Action games. ( Btw by first I mean from a company that has success in the RTS genre already, rather than a start up)
Hopefully it does well, because it could pave the way for games like Total war, Age of empires, CnC, star craft, etc to make MMORTS's.
Who knows maybe Blizzards new mmo is an RTS it would seem like the perfect company to attempt to make one with the following they have in both the MMO and RTS genres.
Edit: here is a link to information about the Kingdom under fire MMOARTS.

and a Q n A from IGN: http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/856/856486p1.html
after reading the Q/A it seems more like a guild wars esk game than a full blown mmorts though ; / Forgot to mention it is for XBOX 360, most likely it is an exclusive like Crusaders was.
Because PC hardware cannot handle it.

they are not very popular though
Well.. I am playing a MMORTS mostly, and I am happy with it.
endwar sounds close to that
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.
If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

Would not planetside fall under this catagory? When it was first released it was quite popular.
