Hi just need some advise on which ram I should get. I'm in the process of getting the ultimate windows vista home.
Running a pentium (R) CPU 3.40GHz
760 gts 8800 video card
3 gigs of 4200 kingston ram I know it's crap lol. Looking to upgrade when I get my rebate check, hoping the 6400 ram would work any ideas?
Comments
Well, I just ordered the kingston 4 gigs 6400 ram I should see a big difference in fps. I hope so!
Main thing to make sure of is that your motherboard will support the 6400 ram
ms-7241 main board series msi motherboard.
found some info memory support ddr2 800/677/533 sdram 4ddr2 dimms
I ordered kingston memory speed 800 mhz pc2 6400 dimm 240 ping ddr2 ram
so should work right? and if i'm understanding this right the 800mpz is the highest i can go.

From the msi comp (Motherboard make) index base page if you search for the G965m it will give you a couple variations to select which will then give you a brief breakdown. Each of the G965m variations (which are all the ms-7241 models) support DDR2-800 speed ram, and do support the kingston brand. That help set your mind at ease?
You can also go to the Kingston site and look up the 6400 model to verify it's speed/type (Which I believe is the DDR2 800, but you can check it yourself should you care to)
Yes it will work with that motherboard !
There was an MSI-7241 -04 and -05 revision both support 800mhz.
yay!! HI YA AVERY! thanks hun just getting a few upgrades done before release.
lol
MSI G965M-F MS-7241
It supports up to PC6400 Memory, so it will work. The thing to look at is the timing on the memory. Most Kingston memory is CAS Latency 5/6 which is high. But it really won't affect much as long as your not overclocking.
However, with your PC. The thing slowing you down the most wasn't your memory but your processor. Pentiums are the slowest processor still on the market. It is possible for you to upgrade to a Core2 processor which will be much faster. However, which one to get depends on your budget.
Something like the E4700 will run well on your motherboard It looks to only have access to an 1066 Mhz FSB which kinda limits your choices on processors.
Thus why I was giving indications as to where to find the information to check against the products owned/ordered, rather than making assumptions myself. Normally better in the long run to know where and how to look up the information to make informed purchases in the future.
I'll do some checking into this. Thanks again for the advise.
So this should look like your motherboard: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=G965M-F
Can you see from the link above on the right where it says "buy now" under that it says:
MSI Part No: MS-7241-050
There are a couple of different types all support that ram: if you go here: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_archives.asp?class=mb
then press "Control and F" then in the serach type "7241" you will see a couple of versions. All of them say what "FSB" the chipset supports for processor upgrades. I think you would really benefit from a fast processor as a future upgrade too
So the chipset you have is a G965 supports this processors: As it lists MS on the end at the MSI website for all versions of that board http://processormatch.intel.com/COMPDB/SearchResult.aspx?BoardName=DG965MS
You could prob pick up a cheap E6600 from somewhere and notice the difference
hmm ok i'll talk to my computer guys. but why would i want to go from a 3.4 to a 2.6?
Its an older pentium chip, even though it runs at a faster speed it not neccessarily the best. The new ones run at a slower speed but carry more memory on board, are generally smaller, give off less heat too. And perform a whole lot better. This place can show the difference in CPU's available to you: http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/cpu-charts-2007/3dmark06-cpu,370.html?p=1262%2C1259%2C1304%2C1257%2C1303%2C1256%2C1300%2C1299%2C1295%2C1298%2C1297%2C1294%2C1296%2C1293%2C1292%2C1281%2C1291%2C1290%2C1289%2C1280%2C1288%2C1287%2C1279%2C1286%2C1285%2C1278%2C1277%2C1283%2C1284%2C1282%2C1276
aww kk thanks hun : ) got my rebate check coming around the 2nd lol so figuring on what i want to spend it on. Judging from all the advise will end up getting the E6600 chip set, so along with the new ram, that should take care of any performance issues I might have with aoc.
