My experiance so far (updated)

Enforcer71Enforcer71 Member UncommonPosts: 780

Well I havent had much time in the game and unfortunately got called into work this morning but what I have experianced has been fun to say the least.

I was actually more suprised about it then anything, I mean not knowing how exactly the combat was going to work was a worry but after cutting up a few peeps I found it a nice change and a lot easier then what I thought it was going to be like. I am not sure how most people move around but with this system I found it much easier to use the mouse (holding both buttons) to move because that allowed me to keep my left hand working the 1,2,3 keys which are your directional moves. Now this could be different for a heavy melee class with more specials but it worked best for me during this test phase. I think the one thing most will have to get used to is the fact you have to hit your keys or you will not fight, a couple of times I was watching the combat and just forgot to hit my directional keys so I just stood there getting beat on.

The UI I will agree with others that it could use a bit of a boost, maybe some options to change a few things but again this is testing so we really do not know whats in the release.  Not really a bad UI just kinda plain and boring and some things are just too big for my taste.

Armor I think will be very interesting in this game, I looted 3 or 4 chest and leg pieces all same stats but each one unique in looks. I actually played around with this a bit just seeing the possibilites people could have with this as they progress in the game mixing and matching to get a unique look. I also noticed, could be because of beta but almost all my loots I could use, think I looted 2 items total that could not be used by my character. It was also nice to see what I call equip compare (addon used in WoW) implemented in the game. When you place cursor over an item in your inventory it shows that item and the item you already have equiped in that spot so you can compare the 2 and decide which one you would prefer to use.

To give everyone an idea for computer spec, I run a pentium 4, 3ghz  processor, 2 gig ram, geforce 7900GS vid card and alone killing npc I was averaging 39 to 40 fps on medium settings. Now what I mean by medium settings is all I did was hit the medium settings button I did not do any other adjustments on top of that which could possibly improve performance.  I felt this was the best way to do it to give others an idea of what they can expect and then they have room to improve by making their own adjustments. Of course during pvp the FPS went way down in big fights.

I must say that even on medium settings the graphics were still very nice and it just made me wonder what this game would look like on max settings, I would imagine beautiful. The game is very easy to get into even with the combat change I was able to jump right in with little difficulty at all, except like I said earlier remembering to hit your keys...lol. I got lost in the game pretty easily and time flew by especially once you get used to the combat you just become this killing machine that just has to keep going and going.

I havent really found anything negative enough to make me not buy this game, other than knowing I will have to upgrade a few computer parts which to some can be too expensive. Like I said I havent had a lot of time in game but the time I have spent has been worth the wait, its a shame I got called into work but i can guarantee as soon as I am out of here i will be back in Age of Conan for the rest of tonight until they shut the servers down.

Oh another point I thought I should mention just because I havent seen anyone else mention it and because others were complaining about the initial download speeds. The original downloads for the client were very slow most of the time and with such a big download this took forever, however once you are logged into funcom the patches were very fast and completed in no time so that shouldnt be an issue during patching when the game is live.

I will post more info later after I have more game time but I just wanted to post the few notes I had now while I had the chance.

Thought I would add a few things to my original post.

I have mainly played the necromancer and demonologist, I am leaning towards the demon because i like the fire and electric builds. You control a demon much like that of a succumbus that a warlock has in WoW along with some nice buffs as well.  A male character gets a female demon and the female characters get a male demon. The builds as far as talents is very much like the way you worked your talent tree in WoW, however you also get additional skill points to customize things like mana regen, stealth, health regen, perception, climbing and a few others.

As of right now I have not seen any type of eating animation, when you eat something it just places the icon timer up. To give you an idea of stats I ate a banana I looted from a gorilla and this gave me +7 health and +2 to health regen. Lasts 1 hour.

Line of sight seems to be working pretty good, even if something is just on the other side of a small hill where you can see and target I could not cast the spell do to line of sight, makes sense considering I was only able to target him by the top of his head. This also seemed to be in effect when something is in heavy brush.

I tested all levels of graphics and was actually suprised at how good the game still looked even on the low setting. You can tell a big difference when comparing photos but it still looked very good IMO. I do have a screenshot taken of the same place using all 3 graphic levels to compare, unfortunately I have never posted photo's on the site here and not really sure how to go about it. If anyone would like to see these pics send me a PM with your email and I will gladly forward them.

During pvp using low settings I was able to get decent fps with my system spec, in an area waiting for the pvp battle once all the graphics loaded and set in on my system I leveled out between 55 and 60 FPS even with peeps running around and casting buffs. Once we were in the battleground this dropped to roughly 20 to 30 with spikes here and there, hard to give accurate numbers here as you are too busy fighting. However I am hoping some of this lag is also caused by the numerous things running during the testing phase. I also need to point out that all I did was click the different level graphic buttons to adjust the settings so I am sure with a few changes manually to more graphic and sound options I could bring the FPS up even more.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask and if I cannot answer them I will try to test them in game to get you the answer before the pvp weekend is over.

I didn't want to start another thread and I approve of Enforcer71's Forum avatar so I'll post  my thoughts here :)

I got into the PvP weekend and I just bought a new system so it ran AoC well.  I was busy this weekend so I could not play that much but I can say I found the game entertaining.   Interesting system of combat that feels like there could be some depth to it.  There are some very nice world and art assets in the game.  And it has a fun character customization.

AoC passed that critical, 'Is is fun the moment you start' test?  Other MMORPGs I have tried failed that and ended up dying (Auto Assault for example)    Even if I played the whole weekend I don't think I'd be able to give any greater review than that.

I will say that the PvP very fun and much more entertaining than the PvE.   That's not say the PvE was not interesting with a decent story and classic slimey REH villains, but it just feels more tedious than the fast-paced PvP that really outshines it.   I have to wonder at what point will players be able to start PvP-ing?   Funcom should make sure to offer this aspect of the game as soon as possible IMO.

PvP minigames are available starting at 20 (afaik.) The World PvP on regular servers is 70+.
However, on PvP servers or R-PvP servers. It's open season on everyone (accept your guild mates) anywhere outside the main cities. :)

I like the sound of the R-PvP.... heck yeah!

All in all I will say I was pleasantly suprised with what I have seen and tested so far. I watched the game but tried to keep my expectations at a decent level and I am glad I did.

The only 2 issues I really have is I need to upgrade a couple hardware pieces and the other was the hotbar having limited space for specials. I didnt comment on this much because for all I know we will be able to adjust this on release but other then that I am very pleased with what I have seen.
