Exploring in MMORPG's

I was an avid EnB player until they announced the sunset and was primarily an Explorer (miner). After that I tried EVE Online, but became bored after a month and couldn't stand the inability to freewarp anywhere in space.

So I am looking for any games, current or future, that can have exploration as a major aspect of the game content. So variables are:
1. Exploration can be space, land, sea, cities or buildings, or dungeons.
2. Fighting/killing does not have to be major in game.
3. Solo play cannot be a disadvantage; I dislike clan/guild committments and attitudes.
4. Can be sci-fi, historical, fantasy.
5. Can be level or skill based character progression.
6. Things to explore for: items, information, discovery, people, artifacts, treasure, etc.
7. Can be 2D or preferably 3D.
8. Can be free or subscription based; prefer not spending real money to buy ingame items.
9. Desired subskills are mining, crafting, and trading.

Does anyone remember the Starflight & Starflight II games? They were from the 80's and were only single player. But they were great because of the space and planetside exploration, even if they were ancient games.

Currently keeping an eye on Middle Earth Online, Fallen Planet, EVE Online, and Face of Mankind. Are there any other games that would fall under my parameters? Thanks in advance!

I also like exploring in MMO's. Probably more than the actual fighting. I would suggest Dark and Light. I'm pretty sure it will release this year and the exploration is HUGE.

Both WoW and EQ2 will be rewarding exploration with experience in some manner. In WoW the first time you enter a region you get a lil experience bonus. In EQ2 there are quests which open new areas for you, access quests.

As for the subskills, EQ2 has the more interactive and advanced crafting system of the 2 by far. I haven't played DnL yet or DE or some of the other big name releases coming down the pipeline yet so i can't comment on them.

I highly recommend X2 The threat by egosoft. It is a game of space exploration, trading, building space stations etc etc.Good graphics lots of ships its a great game. One drawback is its offline but it completly absorbes and engrosses the player.

This game has the depth of ANY online game.

    Heres the link:

In addition there is an mmo in the works to take the "Xuniverse"online.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

Exploring is why I play mmorpgs. I love scout classes (speed and stealth for travel to dangerous places). I spend about 70% of my time in a mmorpg exploring. When SWG came out it was great to explore but now everyone has found everything so the WOW factor isn't there. Dark and light looks awesome for exploring also I plan to get WoW.

I would also say Dark and Light. An explorer is one of the major professions in the game like fighter and crafter.

The way for a freelance explorer to make money is to find mineral locations and sell the coordinates to a clan or freelance miner for development. Automated caravans can be set up to bring in the minerals from far away to any city or village. So the limiting factor in regards to mineral supply will be the number of discovered mines (Dark and Light has a full player based economy with hired NPC venders for items and persistent village markets for minerals and resources). These mines run out after a while so new ones will constantly have to be found and found in regions that are safe (or can be made safe) from attacks by the opposite alignment. In this game any character of the opposite alignment can attack and kill your character. So explorers will not only need stealth and speed skills but also real talent and judgement to find these mines in the unclaimed territories.

Another purpose of the explorer is simply to find out what the opposite alignment is up to. Nobles and clans will pay for this information or send you out to get it once you have been found to be loyal to your alignment. New clans will ask for advice from explorers on where to set up a clan colony.

This was a great topic as I am also more interested in exploration than most other aspects of MMORPG's. I have tried CoH but for exploration as a sellin point it is severly lacking.

I am looking for a big WOW factor. The first time a see a new area I would love to be amazed. EQII looks like it will be pretty amazing to look at, and I am still debating about WoW. And I will definately check out Light and Dark. Razom did not hold my interest for very long when I tried the beta.

I hope there will be a great MMORPG for exploratoin out soon.
