Hey
I'm getting a little bored of fantasy to be honest, so I'm looking at playing a sci-fi MMO. I've played Eve Online quite a bit, but have never really enjoyed it even though I want to. A few years back I played Entropia Universe (back when it was called Project Entropia), but the game felt a little inferior when I tried it again around a month ago. I've also tried Anarchy Online, but sadly I just couldn't put up with the graphics. I'm not the person to not play a game because of its graphics in most cases, but Anarchy is an exception. Tried RF Online too. I used to play Ryzom...but the servers are shut down.
I realise that doesn't leave me with many options, but who knows what hidden gem may be out there. So any suggestions?
P.S. I'm looking for something with a mature community/crafting/not a mindless grind if possible
Thanks

Well, I didn't see SWG on your list, otherwise you've pretty much exhausted the genre unless you want to go back to some older games that lack popularity atm.
You'll have to hold out for Jumpgate Evolution later this year, Stargate Worlds (which I'm betting on 2009 for), Earthrise in like 2010 and perhaps a few other darkhorses like Fallen Earth (who knows when). Unless of course the Blizzard secret MMO project is World of Starcraft.

I've thought about SWG, but to be quite frank, the forum post regarding the game scare me these days haha.
Sadly waiting seems to be a part of the world of MMOs these days. Quite excited about Stargate Worlds...just really in the mood for something of the same type at the moment.
you could try Tabula Rasa. You can get a copy of it for cheap on Amazon. Though the crafting sucks the rest of the game is allot of fun, at least it will hold your attention for a month or two while your still looking around if nothing else. I like the game allot, but even the people who didnt like it would still prolly stay its better than SWG.
My bad...I've tried that too xD
Well when you find a good one let me know, I think we have covered everything here. While you wait, check out Mass Effect . Its coming to PC soon and, though its not an MMO, its so freeken awesome you wont care. Well, that should hold you for a bout a week anyway.
You can also try Eve, its a little harsh, and, has alot of empty space, but, it has alot to offer.
I plan on picking it up for my 360 soon actually ^^
I had this problem before since sci-fi is a smaller niche when it comes to online gaming compared to dnd-like games. My best advice is to just live off any small games of this genre made by indie developers which hopefully will be enough filler till something good comes out.
Anarchy online is about to go under a GIANT graphics update. Its already had a few ground textures changed about a year ago. If it been a long time since you played it go look again. Anarchy will be going from dx7 to dx9 and in the plans to support dx 10 also. Funcom is a awesom company man, they DO NOT let there games die. Check out this link http://youtube.com/watch?v=bRmk0hZam7A&fmt=18
If anarchy online can look like that and maintain low res graphics for low end users they'll be doing quite considering how small the sci-mmo niche is. I just wonder how much of an overhaul can they make to compete with the next gen games.
I've decided to give it another try Downloading it at the moment. Hopefully I can look past the graphics and get a nice surprise when they implement the new engine later this year!
That being said, performance on any system built in the past few years will likely be far superior than the current engine on the same system, even though the graphics are much, much more detailed.
Just a guess based on Funcom's comments.
But, keep in mind that EQ when through this exact same scenario during the transition EQ -> EQ2. The EQ engine never did get the promissed overhaul, even though the zones are being somewhat enhanced even to this day.
So, we will see if Funcom really does do the update. Or if it is just a come-on to keep AO players paying for as long as possible. Could go either way.
Not sure if you have tried Neocron 2 yet but it's a Sci-Fi MMO. I can't tell you much more than that because I haven't played it myself. Also W.E.L.L. online is in developement too and it's a Sci-Fi mmo and a lot of the players from Ryzom are intending to playing it.
Are they changing anything else besides the graphics? AO or other games made by it's developers will be higher in my gaming queue if they can alter a game at it's core. I wouldn't really care if it was a major success just that it didn't flop or it wasn't immediatly patched and tweaked. Basically what I'm trying to say is companies that aren't complacent with they're products and strive to make it better rather than finishing it simply to collect they're paycheck seem better to me. Also have you tried Silver Knight or Raycrash? I know they're not mmo but they may be able to help you pass the time. Have fun hunting your next gaming passion.
In a Dev Log somewhere, a AO dev said that they were actually making the new engine to be very easy to continue to upgrade/update. Dunno if that answers your question.
