MMORPGs Today...

I'm not sure what the majority of the MMORPG community thinks but I've asked a few friends of what they think of the RPGs around today...

Personally, my own thoughts are that it seems developers seem to be lacking in imagination these days, I've never created an MMO so I don't know the difficulties of creating one but as an experienced player of MMORPGs I think I am entitled to say/ask this.

I've found a lot of the games coming out lately are pretty much the same, FANTASY based games with your typical race/class characters, Human, Orc and Elves. Anything else is in my opinion, are a glorified version of the 3 already mentioned.

Why aren't developers thinking outside the box?

Shouldn't that old saying apply to the creation of games also? "If you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" when talking of games = "if you don't have anything worth while to offer, don't offer anything at all". The only creative thing that I see are the names of the games...

I'm not here to offend anyone, I'm just looking for answers AND opinions. What do you think of the MMORPG industry today? Please post constructively.

Thanks

I was posting very similar topics around lately, describing a majority of the korean mmos as being the same: a "beautiful grind".  But I was talking about how they are the same in gameplay, because I think that's what's really important--gameplay.

I'm not saying having unique races and classes doesn't make a game even better, but I'd play a game with orcs and elves if the game is still fun.  (I played WoW and loved it haha).

I recently discovered a new game, "Blackstar", which has me totally hyped over it.  It's sci-fi fantasy involving 4 races (humans, andriods, scorn, riven) with elements of flight sim, melee combat, guns, and MAGIC.  I don't really like sci-fi games generally, but this is a mix of sci-fi AND fantasy.  The short intro story "A Black Star Rising" has me hooked and the art from the game just blew me away.  It's still in development, but you can check out some info at http://www.spacetimestudios.com/games/ .  There's also a short video--too short imo, but it makes me want to try it.

I also recommend taking a look at some of their dev blog entries if you're interested in following development:

    http://www.spacetimestudios.com/2008/04/09/iconic-character-development/

    http://www.spacetimestudios.com/2008/03/11/techs-role-in-grayworlding/

I make no promises that it'll be a good game.   I'm just excited about its uniqueness and style.

PS - this is an american made game!

I got sidetracked there hyping up a game.  Anyways, like you say, I'm also disappointed that these newer games that are coming out are still the same kind of grind games with the same kinds of races/classes.  But even more disappointed that they fail to compare to games that have been released years ago like WoW.  WoW has always been the industry leader in team play and content.  I'm so disgusted to see that all the new games are so contentLESS and so team play-LESS--with crappy quests and crappy grinding.

However, games like The Chronicles of Spellborn and Blackstar look extremely innovative, and I have very high hopes for the both of them.

I haven't read any of the responses, simply because they are irrelevant concerning my answer to your question.

The answer is, the makers of mmorpg's don't care about imagination for the most part. They are here to make money, period. The only thing that matters is the almighty dollar (or euro or pound sterling, etc.).

In the early days, things were much simpler. Yes, I mean the early days of video games, like space invaders. While it was about money, it was also about imagination. UO is a great example.

Now, it's about money. Take a look. All of the little companies that made GREAT games have been bought out by the likes of EA, Sierra, etc. Sega may, or may not be a last bastion. I don't know.

The simple fact is, with monopolies come stagnation. Until a great gamer gets off of his/her ass with all of the money they have made coding for another company, and develops for the people instead of for profit, you, I, and everyone else are out of luck.

    Damn.

Without looking at your post count, I could tell almost immediately that you are a new member to this website.  You are expressing the same sentiments as a large percentage, perhaps even a majority, of other members have also expressed.  I'm not criticizing you, I guess I'm welcoming you to the club.

Browse this forum frequently and you will find a lot of "What's wrong with today's MMOs?" and "I'm finished with RPGs for good."  They should remane this the MMO vent channel or devote an entire folder to the topic.  This is where a lot of gamers who crave a great MMO come to express their disappointment with what we currently have.  I'm with you on this.  So as I said, welcome aboard.
