Someone tell me about the "summits?"

Beatnik59Beatnik59 Member UncommonPosts: 2,413

If anyone was at those post-NGE vet summits, what were they like?  What did you all talk about?  Do you think they were useful?  Is it something other game publishers should do?  Just give me your thoughts on any of the above, or anything I missed.

The summits were a marketing tool , full of hype , half truths and downright lies , thank goodness most players didnt fall for it and even if they did the NGE is still there to remind us of just how bad things have become for poor SWG .

My friends who went to the summits came back thinking that they were getting server mergers.  Why?  Because Smedley told them they would.  They've been disappointed and felt that once again they were strung along by SOE..

Also, the summits came when people were complaining about all the bugs and issues of the NGE and asking for a rollback or classic servers.

Now, many of the serious old bugs and issues remain, of course there are no classic servers, and the promised server mergers never happened.

So some people feel that they were a P.R. gimmick to attempt to mollify the rioting masses, but that because of reasons stated above, they didn't manage to do that.

There were summit reports written on the official boards by those who attended.  You may still be able to read them.  They may have been deleted in the forum purge though, not sure.

If you find them, they're an interesting read.  I read them all at the time.

It was kind of sad to see all the hope and enthusiasm that very optimistic players came away with, only to see them later disappointed once again.

Fishermage went to a face to face with SOE in Las Vegas, he might be able to share what that was like with you.

  • Went to one...  Was lied to.  Saw Grant Rogue 5 McDaniel hang his head in shame when the whole room of more players than exist on ANY server today shouted that Jedi should be EARNED not given out...

The only highlight was some blonde MILF who was a SOE PR flunkie.

    And a tornado.

the summits are fanboi and fanbot lovefests for the devs. and a place so the dev's can lie right in the faces of the fanbois and fanbots. that is all they are.

oh and i will be going to the $OEfest in vegas this year.

i know how come i will be going there? i am going to get a protest going and telling the player base about the lawsuit that will soon be underway. i want to get everyone in that room screaming we want pre-cu.

It's best to ask in the general forum - as people here don't actually play the game :)

I havn't been to a summit but i hear they're lots of fun and great places to go on occasion.

You can even view some upcoming content i believe.

Account has been stolen, why would someone want to steal my account?

  • I'm sure the "summits" they hold now are nothing but fanboi love ins.  The ones in 2006 had HUGE turnouts and the crowd was universally hostile towards the NGE.  Questions were tough.  It was clear from the questions, suggestions, even DESIGN DOCS that players there were trying to get the Devs to read that the audience knew more about the game than the chimps sitting at the table.  Not one damn thing discussed there ever made it into the game.  Furthermore, more than HALF the "publish plan" slideshow they showed us then STILL hasn't been done, 2 years later.  I suspect that the plan was predicated  on them being able to keep a Dev staff after the "summits" somehow stopped the subscription collapse that was then in full swing.

Actually, I think they had the opposite effect.  After so many of us met face to face with the Devs and saw how clueless and stubborn they were, more canceled.

The one in Indianapolis filled up one of the largest meeting rooms in one of the city's main convention hotels.

Today they could hold one in the lobby of a Motel 6.

What is the point in having any more summits?  Had they been genuine, they'd have rolled back, done classic, or at least scrapped the NGE for a better system if they'd listened to the attendees.  Don't go, don't waste your money.  I wouldn't cross the street to meet with these Devs.  Nothing has changed.  They don't want to listen to you, even you fanbois.

And reading some of the things "Toilet Boy" Blixtev has been posting, they'd be better off shutting up and not talking to anyone.  They aren't any better at PR than they are at game development.

You've already sold your soul to SOE so I guess there's no point in charging for attendance.

the summits are just an excuse for the devs to party in a hotel and snort coke on sony's dime.

arguing with a corporate fanboi is like teaching special education.
even if you teach him something...at the end of the day he's still retarded.

They are not getting anything from Sony!

They are using the money of their gullible subscribers for this kind of propaganda stunts since they are obviously not spending money on the the game! ...Just like SOE always has done...

My concern about summits now is this: SOE seems to feel that its EULA allows them to do anything they want, at any time to the game, regardless of what they tell players they are planning to do.

If this is the case, what's the point?  Honestly, if they get player input and promise to do A, but then turn around and do B, and then waive the EULA, why in the world would anyone waste their time attending these?  Why does SOE even waste its time?

i was at the european summit 2006 - so well it was the first summit in europe after the nge. The devs got pretty much hate from all who were there half of the ppl who attended didnt even play the game anymore we just wanted ONE chance to hit the devs in the face.  Even the ppl who played talked about how crafters got the shaft. Julio Torres was soo amazed back there as the whole room told him that the nge crafting is boring and no challenging. He stated that for him the Pre nge crafting was too complex and that he thought that we all thought that way .....

The whole soe team was pretty much in the defense and they tried to defend their swg nge and failed in my eyes totally.

Why i was there was pretty simple i wanted to hear the devs speaking abaout the future - and i heared what i feared they have no clue what they did or what they would do from that point.

Also i was at the Games Convention for business and had time to attend the breakfast summit - and it was free of charge.

Yes summits are just PR festivals - but i guess the 2006 summit isnt one the devs like to remember...

Although, I guess in the case of NGE the "All the power of the Death Star and we can't get a dry tray?" should be turned in to "All the power of the Star Wars IP and a well known company and we can't get a decent game?"
