"open beta" NDA?

tboxtbox Member Posts: 372

Is there a freaking chance anyone of us will be able to see a review that is not a direct violation of a NDA?  Unless I am wrong the fake file planet open beta is not only barred to paying file planet subscribers but has a nice non disclosure agreement. Seriously  I  cant stand some of the great choices Fun Com has made... I think I am one of the few who will not play this game due to retarded conduct in releasing this game.

Fanbois attack!

    Pretty sure the devs already stated in an offical post that the nda would be lifted for or during the open beta.

    It does seem like they REALLY are trying to keep people tight lipped about whats going on in game.  Are they actually going to manage to get to release day with the NDA still hovering around?  That would be a first wouldnt it, in MMOs, or has any other game done that?

    edit:  I am thinking the NDA may be lifted May 1st but I expect nothing.

    During the pvp weekend they lifted NDA after about 24 hours, they will probably do the same with open beta. It is so close to release and it will be real hard to keep 50000 people from not leaking anything. That is my personal opinion of course.

    They will lift the NDA for the fileplanet beta, but that means nothing. The fileplanet beta will not only be capped at 13 but it will not have most of the major features such as sieges, raid instances ect.

    Unless they lift the NDA from the closed beta we will know almost nothing about this game when it is released. I can't say I like or understand this strategy, but time will tell if it was smart to do it that way. It could just be that they don't want people knowing everything about the game on day one, but it's leading to alot of speculation that the game has major problems and they are trying to hide it. Then they can cash in on the hype before people figure it out. They wouldn't be the first to do it.

    open beta is  a waste of time, if the lvl cap is 13 then ive already experienced the "island starting area" countless times i dont need to do it anymore

    Yup, two sides to this. One side is "They don't want us to know anything! Maybe there's nothing satisfying past level 20? 60 levels of lame? Uh oh!!!"

    The other side is "Wtf you noob! They're doing this for a reason just to keep it wrapped up like a present. Don't ruin the surprise yay!"

    Personally I don't care if Funcom lifts it or not because it's their strategy. If it works out well, great, if it doesn't, great. My opinion is that they better lift it before "open" beta's over, or else there's going to be alot of disgruntled people who want to tell about the game, how great/terrible it really is, if they keep the NDA.

    Edit: My understanding is that it will be lifted "some time" after the start of Open Beta. Can't confirm or deny though.

    A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

    The most logical choise i see FC making would be:

    No NDA on open beta, or lifted a few days in. NDA still active on close ones.

    Seriously althou i worry they dont have enought to show past lvl20 (yeah i played Vanguard and almost preordered DnL (luckely got to try at friends place, saved me some cash))

    Im still approving of game designers not releasing info before release. I mean its only in the mmo buisness ppl seem to want to have the guides ready of last boss at lvl1 beta stage and knowledge of the first fotm class before they even preorder the game. I sure as hell dont wanna know how ganon fights in next zelda game before they sell the game to me...

    Then again, only in mmo buisness over 50% of the games released are unfinished or hardly playable, in difference to the other game markets (althou they sure as hell aint bullet proof either).

    Still i love the idea of a game developer only hinting at some good stuff and keeping NDA. And hopefully the good stuff for once can deliver! at launch!

    Letter from the Product Director about Open Beta

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Product Director Jørgen Tharaldsen explains why we have chosen to go the route we annouced today:

    ~~~~~
    Will there be an NDA?
    We might keep it up a bit to let the main stresstest rush go by, but it will be lifted way before we launch. Soon everyone can talk about what they are playing instead of what they think they will be playing. We really look forward to this of course! This marks the start of a new chapter for us, and you all, we are now soon moving into live services!
    ~~~~~~

    Hope this helps.

    It would not be a first. Anarchy Onlines' NDA was never dropped.

    Arguing about a beta under a NDA is silly.

    I think it would be more productive if you guys argued about the existence of God (Yes I am being facetious. No, I am not some religious whacko.)

    The bottom line is, it's true that beta clients are almost never, ever the most up to date version that a developer will have. They will often keep the same old client while their working copy is months if not a year ahead. They may shuffle around different versions of varying usability in order to isolate problem. The list goes on. I find it likely the fast travel map is their way of isolating players to certain zones. As someone who has done some programming myself, I can say that it would be extremely easy to set up a "fast travel" system to circumvent a large portion of the game if I for whatever reason wished to focus my testers to certain zones. All you have to do is change the destination of the trigger at the zone boundary to a non-adjacent zone. Simple.

    In any case, if I were running a beta, the fact that the client I was sending to users was an old, fragmented copy meant to test specific aspects of the game, would be my prime motivation for keeping the NDA active for so long. I might also do the same if my game was a broken, steaming pile of refuse that even I didn't want to play.

    Either way, there is no way to know unless you can get your hands on their most complete copy of the client. Speculating about their reasons for holding on to the NDA so late in the game is an exercise in futility. I'm not taking sides here, let me say that right now. You've both made inane arguments against one another. Avery's history as a "fanboi" is no more relevant than your assertions that the game must suck simply because the NDA has gone on so long and that the beta client is buggy and incomplete.

    Like I said. Simple.

    If you are so worried about it, just wait a few days after release and then read some reviews.
