2010: Internet Doomsday

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/90339

80% of traffic in two years will be the transferring of video files.  HD takes up grips of room (they use blue-violet lasers with shorter wavelength to read and write substantially more data with the disks).

What do you think will happen?  How attached are you to the internet?

I can see internet service providers charging by the megabyte...

Maybe the grid will be in much greater effect by then.

personally...i watch about 1 video a week.  80% seems a tad high but i dont think its anything to worry about.  as for charging by the megabyte, it doesnt make sense.  technology is always improving and eventually we will see speeds of 1gb/s (key word eventually ).  the internet as we know it will get cheaper and cheaper but the better and faster versions (like ADSL2) will be expensive at first and then slowly become cheaper and cheaper until they too are replaced.  its an endless cycle.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I see it's the same "grid" I was thinking of.  The first article you linked mentioned nothing of CERN so I was thinking maybe it was another "grid".  This private fiber-optic network was created to handle the massive quantity of data created by the LHC (Large Hadron Collider which will become the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator).  I want 1 gigabyte per second.

Actually 2013 is dooms day based on the Incan calendar.

Just remove and ban youtube and we will be freed from both mentally insane videos and even worse comments on those. And of course we won't reach the cap by 2010 either.

Actually, I believe it's December 21st, 2012, and it's based on the Mayan calendar.

Not to sound like a modding jerk, but doesn't this really belong in Off Topic rather than MMORPG pub?

But to add to the discussion, I keep reading stuff about an internet 'redisign' happening because the internet wasn't originally designed quite so well but just blew up so quick...

Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.

Actually, Doomsday was 6 months ago. We were just too busy playing games to notice.

Woohoo! Doomsday I hope it really happens this time. I am sick of the false alarms. In 1999 nothing, 2000 nothing. I mean what has a guy gotta do to see Doomsday? If it dosen't arrive by 2010 or 1213 I am just gonna give up on it. I mean, I bought all these Doomsday presents for people!

They said the same exact like of bunk in 1998 and I remember how problematic the 'Net' was back then; IRC netsplits due to routers going down on AlterNet, and other UUnet subsidiaries. And here we are, fine and dandy. Do you want to know how they fixed it? They overbuilt. We'll overbuild again and again and again. The cost of fiber optics then was astronomically high, even for a regional backbone, today fiber optical cable is being strung all over and will probably be strung over the oceans in light of this year's convenient cable cuts in the Mideast. So, please don't buy into the bull, and remember profit motive often solves such 'problems.'

The real threats to our networks are really going to be if the doomsayers speaking of resource shortages are speaking the truth. If it costs so much to fuel our vehicles, imagine how much the resources to keep our electricity going must be. And I doubt people are going to be for mandatory blackouts and any kind of conservation attempts....

Sorry, not meaning to sound like a tree hugging hippie. I was just contemplating this as the gas prices rise past $4 a gallon here in the states, and on my daily commute home I'm surrounded by larger than life trucks and SUV's and cars seem to be the minority. But that's TX living, too.

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Dec 21st? Dec 21st!? The day before my birthday, and *that* is the day they chose to end the world. What kind of BS is that!!! By golly, I have a bone to pick with those Mayans. They will PAY!

  • EnigmaEnigma Member UncommonPosts: 11,384

oh come one.  Everyone who is everyone (except Belgiums) knows the world will end on Dec 21, 2012. It's common fact! At least thats what the History channel says!

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

what can i say to you - -/...that day, we will be together...ohhh...

  • Tuor7Tuor7 Member RarePosts: 982

Unless you are a highly attractive member of the opposite (fairer) sex, I'm not sure the whole "we will be together" thing is something I should look forward to. If you are, well, there's no reason to wait until 2012... ;P

if that is true..we should be friendly with each other..hi, friends..let's happy together without being hostile to others...
