Whereas I am looking forward to BOTH games, I do feel that the author of that editorial is a bit biased towards WAR. I understand his view of open beta and the lack of info on certain aspects of AoC (same can be said about WAR), but I don't see anything wrong with how they are going about their open beta in AoC. Honestly years ago there just wasn't as many people playing MMOs as there is now. I don't think many game companies are willing to foot the bill for millions of people to play their game for free.
MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S
Can AoC have a regular open beta? Most games can...but most are not rated 'M'. If they did an open beta...then they would need CC confirmation of you age. That would be a pain for a beta test. Makes sence to go threw a company where ppl already have an account. Tho I am not fond of the this camping for beta codes that Fileplanet has done. Would make more sence just to randomly select ppl who sign up for the test n send out the codes over time.
Man, there sure are alot of cry babies in the MMO community. Go buy a fishing pole or a gun and go fishing or hunting and shut up. You take a game way to damn serious.
Am I excited to play AoC? Yes, I went to Fileplanet, paid 7 dollars for something I find to enjoy besides just wanting to try AoC and will probably keep my Fileplanet account, downloaded the Comrade and went turkey hunting. I got home and after an hour heard a ding, went to my pc and saw to click for a key, I click got a key and started downloading. Where is the camping in that?
I am not worried about the release,I wont pay for the open beta,I am sure there will be lots of info on this site leading to the release once the NDA is lifted so I dont see the problem,Sure you will have to seperate the fanboi from the flamer but you will get a good idea about the game.
I am not sure what you mean "since the pvp weekend"that seemed to go quite well and that was on the old engine,I wouldnt worry too much like I said plenty info incomming soon,Also you could just wait a month after release and see how many still want to play after the free month that come's with the game then make up your mind.
If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"
What bothers me the most is the NDA duration. For a game that will launch in a month and still under NDA i have a feeling the game developpers are trying to hide something. Just get rid of it already, so peoples can make comments about it.
All I can say is WAR will disappoint. As for AoC - its close enough that you can wait and see. Why even start threads like this when the game will be in beta next week? Tons of info then - so stop trolling the forums to pass the time and go fly a kite. Or hunt as mentioned above lol.

I totally agree. The author of the linked article seems very biased to me, and I just don't get that frame of mind. I have pre ordered both AoC and WAR and I am going to try both, there are features in WAR that I look forward to and there are features in AoC that I look forward to, the games, even though of the same genre seem different from each other, so I see no point in totally committing myself to one and just shun the other. Later on I will (most likely) cancel one of the subscriptions and that is it. And I will most likely pick up TCOS too and give that a spin. Which one if any is a better game? Ask me again once they all are out and I have tried leveling, pvp and endgame in them all.

Cry me a fkn river! If you want to try the open beta than get a sub to fp. If yah dont than you dont have to pay. I dont think there is anyone with a gun pointing at your head telling you to pay up for beta or die.
This was pretty much for the guy who wrote post complaining about open betas.
Sounds to me like the guy is just pissed off at the way fileplanet is doing the beta which I can't blame him. It's one of the dumbest things I've seen in awhile.
He makes some valid points about the state of MMO's and marketing though. Charging people for just a chance to get into a limited beta was unheard of not that long ago. Now not only can you get people to pay for a beta you can get them to sit at their pc's all day like zombies waiting for a key.
The one bug and I'm out crowd he's referring to is most likely people who are new to MMO's. I'm not exactly sure why people seem to accept the sloppy way these type of games get released. Sure MMO's are an ongoing project we all know that.
Imagine however if you went out and paid 50 bucks for a single player FPS. Then when you started playing it half the features didn't work and it ran like shit. Then the company said well we will fix it in a few months don't worry about it. People would be furious and demand refunds ect. Now with MMO's this seems to be somewhat acceptable. Some game studios have taken huge advantage of that attitude, but then seriously overplayed that hand too. So I can see why people are suspicious about this game with it trying to keep so much of it under wraps so close to release.
It's not that people can't afford the 7.95 or even the 50 bucks for the game. It's the idea that they are getting ripped off by slick marketing by a company more concerned about recovering their investment rather than producing a good product that people will be satisfied with.
So.... All i can see with the Open Beta being filtered through fileplanet is to keep the Kiddies from playing a M rated game... I am sure there are leagal issues, ever since the "hot coffee" GTA issue, A Game like AoC needs to be very carefull on how they opperate the game release.
Giving a Free-be open beta out with confirming age of the gamer is a bit hard, so by using fileplanet they are Basicly handing off that responsability to fileplanet. ensureing AoC/funcom recieve little to blame for uner age people joining the beta.
Comments
it launches in less than a month and the NDA will be lifted in a few weeks
there'll be plenty of commentary soon enough
EQ2 fan sites
Sit back and relax Grimland. We will all soon know the true AoC.

Why do people not understand that you do not have to camp the website? Use Comrade, damnit! Fileplanets spells it out for you multiple times.
