Buying An MMO, But Which One???

Plagu3Plagu3 Member Posts: 12

Ok, so here i am, basically tried every F2P MMO like basically ever made :P (to list some: Shaiya, Cabal, Rappelz, 9Dragons, 12Sky, Anarchy Online, Tantra Online, EU Demons, Conquer Online, MU Online, Archlord, Dungeon Runners, GW, Fury, Knight Online, Lineage II, MapleStory, Runescape, RF Online, Shadowbane, Silkroad, and plenty more)...

so ive decided to stop being a cheap person and to go out and buy a game, but because im only 17 and dont have a job until the summer, i only got enough to buy a game, but not pay monthly for it (or else i would have got EQ2 by now)... so im looking for a Online MMORPG that i can play without a P2P per month, but ill buy it in stores... if you can think of one other then GW (which i already have) then please share, because i feel like buying one this week/weekend!!!

i appriciate all inputs from everyone, thanks alot

Plagu3

P.S : If possible but it doesnt have to be... have a Mage and a Archer class (most MMO's have atleast one of those anyways so thats why im not worried:P) Thanks again

I think but could be wrong, you mentioned just about every game that is just about half decent+ that is f2p,Do you have all edtion's of guildwars?

If someone had came up to me in 1980 when I was on my Atari 2600 and said we will be playing games with thousands of people at the same time.I guess my response would have been,"but I only have 2 joysticks"

Hellgate London.  Not the best, not a true mmo, but subbing is optional.

  • KassiahKassiah Member Posts: 70

Hmm ... if you are not willing or able to pay anything monthly, I suppose you could try Hellgate: London. Its more like Guild Wars when it comes to MMO's though - Some hub areas where people congregate, and the rest is instanced. All the other major MMOs you didn't mention have a mandatory monthly fee. You can buy some of them pretty cheap now though and maybe be able to afford a month or two of play time

  • Plagu3Plagu3 Member Posts: 12

Hellgate:London isnt a P2P per month... i thought it was... if it isnt that might be the game that i will get, because it looks half decent... does it have a big online player base???

  • KassiahKassiah Member Posts: 70

You have the option to P2P, but it is not required. You just get extra benefits. The player base is fine despite what some will tell you :) Its pretty easy to find a guild if you want, and there seems to be people grouping up regularly. Most seem to solo though *shrug*

Good luck, hope you enjoy the game if you choose it :)

1 more question... is there lvling up, to buy new armors, skills, etc... n if so do u know what the lvl cap is?

  • KassiahKassiah Member Posts: 70

Max level is 50. Yes, you pick and class and level up. Each level you spend attribute points and upgrade a skill. You can get new armor, but there is also a system by which you break down the junk you loot and use that to keep upgrading your current weapons so they stay at your approximate level.

I dont know if you ever played Diablo II but it has a similar gameplay style. You hack and slash through instances to complete quests, then rinse and repeat. Once you beat the game, you play through again on higher difficulty which gives you better loot, etc. The highest difficulty level has perma-death :)

  • Plagu3Plagu3 Member Posts: 12

wow it sounds pretty cool... lol from reading that i got a couple more questions if you dont mind...

ummm, without buying a subscription what do i loose???

do i ever see any other players so that i can trade with them, talk with them, grind with them???

    fast grind, slow grind???

wide base of items such as armors and weapons???

  • KassiahKassiah Member Posts: 70

Lol ... I would suggest you go read upon the game a bit :) You will see other players, but usually as they dash from instance to instance or stand around at the shop area. There is global chat so you can trade items and look for groups there.

Subscription ... better go look that up, I dont remember. There are some areas you cant get to I think, and you cant use the elite difficulty modes if I remember correctly. That wouldnt matter until you've played for quite awhile though.

Leveling moves along pretty quickly, I wouldnt call it much of a grind. It gets repetetive though, basically the game is about killing whatever is in your way and thats about it ;)

Decent amount of armor/weapons from what I have seen. I didn't play it all that long though. They do have two mage type classes, but no archer - just a marksman that uses guns.

dang that sucks... this game actually looks sickkk... im half a gig off for ram, which = alot in the world of gaming... ughh... they gotta come out with a MMORPG with ALOT of ppl playing online for PS3... id so buy it if there was like WoW for PS3, or a type of game like that, it would be extremely fun!!!

and i wish EQ2 didnt have a monthly fee, cuz that would be a good game 2... but dang, i really wanted Hellgate

  • KassiahKassiah Member Posts: 70

I doubt you could even launch EQ2 with only 512 RAM, or almost any newer MMO actually.  Except World of Warcraft. If you can come up with the monthly fee I would suggest you find a way to give that one a try, I think you'd like it and your computer will run it, and it will still look good :)

  • KassiahKassiah Member Posts: 70

Download the free trial, you will at least get 10 days to play :)

lol played that game, but on acouple Private Servers... i got around 10 lvl 70's on a 10x server, and then on a 20x server im lvl 144:P which took like A LONG TIME... but i dont play it no more, it was extremely addicting at first, then i got bored...

If your strapped for cash, and you did all the free to play ones, then the best bang for your buck is World of Warcraft original.  This is why :

Only $19.95 for the game if you shop around, and you get the first month free ! After that you can try to scrape up $15 a month, even just a few months and it will be the same as buying one of the newer games.

It's one of the fewer games that you will never notice that you don't need the expansion untill level 60 as the expansion only gives you two new starting races and two new starting zones.  No one will ever ask you to come into the new starter zones because it's solo content anyway.

Don't let anyone kid you that WoW sucks, as it's the only game thats very rich in content, and most all servers have many people to group with 24/7.

    $19.95 + 1 free mo. +  2 pay mo. =  $49.95 for 3 months. You can't get better than that ( you can, but poor quality )

One last thing, and everyone will agree to this........... Most all pay to play games are BY FAR BETTER than free ones.

well, sadly your first problem was playing on a private server. it's not like wow will miss the subs, but it's still not the right thing to do. Not to mention the quality on "private" servers is horrible and unreliable at best. Then again you're only 17, we all have to try something at least once.  live and learn.

Well Like the above poster, I think your done. I know most all other MMOs and you don't like  WoW and you have a lower end PC without  much cash then their is nothing we can do for you,  Sorry

I think your best bet is to just not buy a game, and spend it on buying  either a second 512 stick of ram(depending on your slot size/ amount used) or buying a 1024 stick, they are both fairly cheap.

i think i might wait for Rohan to come out:)

  • ShrikeValeoShrikeValeo Member Posts: 33

Heh, just had to look for Rohan, the list of F2P mmorpgs spans beyond any one person's reach....

Anyhoo, id agree with not shelling out for a game atm:

I was in the same boat, only really being able to play F2P. I ended up getting hooked on GW and getting all the Campaigns. Now I'm working, I can technically get any game, but shelled out for a neat rig instead. The potential of games can quite suprisingly be hampered by system specs; or, at least the higher end ones i.e. a few P2P and a good number of single player games + FPSs.

I wouldn't agree with Hellgate, simply because EA are on the label, but I won't go into that....

However, have you considered something single player with multiplayer features? Although System specs may be an issue, in particular current releases (UT3 for one), they can provide an addictive source of adrenaline fuelled frenzies assuming you don't lag out after 5 seconds or get a smooth constant 3fps. Depending on what you do with yourself financially, if you eventually can get a P2P, many are looking at 2008 release that show some promise, so if that is possibly on the table at some point, that may be plausible. Just make sure game addiction doesnt get the better of you, and perhaps get a RAM + graphics card upgrade

I just feel theres needs to be a minor evolution in F2P games, although any advancements tend to result in P2P status, alas. Biding time won't hurt however.......unless you count being bored to death..

Been messing around with Mabinogi for a couple weeks now. If you can get past the cutesy anime graphics, the leveling and skill training is semi-entertaining. It's free all around, so at least give it a shot.
