Hey mmorpg.com experts, I need your assistance. I'm a college student studying Economics who is also a casual gamer. I'm looking to start up with a new MMORPG. The only one I've played so far is WoW (I know, you're probably so sick of hearing that). The reason I got into the game was for two reasons: the first being that it's very easy to get into (a slight learning curve), and two was that there was a lot of teamwork and camaraderie (or so I thought). After playing it for some time, I got so sick of soloing stuff and killing things. I loved running instances with people and working as a team - that's what online games are about! But by the time I got to endgame, I was so burnt out by the grind. Also, during the time I didn't play everyone else did and got super hardcore. They advanced past where I was and left me in the dust.
So, I'm looking for a new game recommendation. Again, I love the social and teamwork aspects of MMOs. I love feeling like part of a community. WoW is as far from that as possible - full of immature kids. Also, being an Econ nerd (it IS what I'm doing to get a doctorate in, after all), I love games with thriving economies (the WoW Auction House was very interesting to me).
Thanks for reading guys, and thanks for any recommendations you may have.

I think A Tale In The Desert might be more your style, if its even still running I havent checked in quite a bit. Everyone plays an important role in developing the whole world. If you want good economy, EVE is nice as well
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into that game. I also tried playing EVE, as I heard the economy is wonderful, but I couldn't get past the first half hour of the trial. It just didn't catch me. I don't know if it was the learning curve or what. Perhaps I'll give it another go.
Let me clarify that while a player-driven economy is really exciting, I'm primarily looking for a great social/teamwork/community experience. The economy is definitely a bonus, though.
Thanks again for reading! I really appreciate it.
I don't think it gets any more casual than WoW, which also has the largest community. You've got me stumped.
Maybe a game like Second Life would appeal more to the economic side of things... Not much adventure/dragon slaying, much more social/RP...
Im inclined to steer you towards either of the turbine games, dungeons and dragons online (all instances, easy grouping, great community) but the economy isnt really there. you can log in, do a dungeon or two and log out (the dungeons take from 20 mins to a couple hours) or lord of the rings online great instances, story has meaning, easy to kill time on with traits and deeds, but again outside the AH no real economy to speak of. they are both solid games that i would play again in a heartbeet.
This really is not WoW/EQ where Gear makes the man. Here in eVE, the man with biggest balls, willing to risk the most, will win. It is risk/reward here- not always wear best items 24/7 and beat the crap out of all else.

Hi
It lookes to me you should start playing WoW. It's very casual, there are many friendly guilds out there. When you are going for a raid in WoW you must be able to trust your teammates so teamwork is crucial. The economics in WoW are very intresting aswell and due the auction house it's very easy to earn some money just by merchanting.
So it looks to me WoW is the perfect game for you ! Give it a try !
did you even read his post man...he said he has played wow and wants somethign different
but back on topic, if what you mean by economy is a auctionhouse then practically any game will have that these days.

Did you even read his post??.... wtf?
WoW is about as casual as it gets....dont know what else to recommend on that point. Maybe Tabula Rasa....
EvE has everything you are looking for if you can get into it, and thats the hardest part, you NEED to get into a player corp fast (I suggest EvE-University) and get to know the community and do things with other people, EvE IS a team based game. You need lots of self motivation and be able to think for yourself b/c it will not hold your hand and tell you what to do next.
....total player economy (NPCs dont buy items from you.), Its prolly the most advanced player run economy of any game. They even have a economist on staff and the market is being used in multiple studies of how game econ works. You will never think of a game that uses a AH system in their game as a real market or having a real economy after getting into the depths of the EvE Market.
