An Honest Review of Perfect World.

Maybe it's just me or has any other people been searching for a new and exciting MMORPG, one that is a complete breath of fresh air?

With that in mind I stumbled across Perfect World, not through any form of advertising or through word of mouth but just through coincidence. I did some quick checks on the net just to see what other people had thought and comments overall ranged from the game being either really good; the best free MMORPG out there! or really bad; another typical Korean grinder. I thought I better check it out myself and keep an open mind about it all.

I put all biases aside and went ahead and just played the game, at the game’s natural pace and intended functionality. This review is by no means what others may think, after all a lot of MMORPGers have different ideas on what makes the game fun for them. Therefore, what I was really looking for in this game was that. Is this game fun? I would like to think that people look forward to MMORPGs that don’t just involve grinding for the most part, considering how many f2p MMORPGs out there that are exactly that.

Firstly I must start off with this: “WOW! Those graphics!! ." The graphics are just top notch and the scenery stunning. If you've ever wanted a game that is eye candy and you can take some breathtaking screenshots, THIS is the game! You don't even need a good system as the graphics engine is pretty clean on older systems, and with a lot of options to turn the graphics settings off this game is playable even on the minimum specs required with these on. I also didn’t find the lag to be a problem. They have also just upgraded their hardware so the servers run smoothly for where I am located.

With graphics that rival even the most proud games today, how does it feel to actually play this game, is it fun?

Unfortunately, I didn’t find this game to be much fun at all. To me the whole game feels a bit empty with beautiful scenery and backdrops with mobs just scattered about. To me, it lacks substance. I did not feel any form of excitement playing the game, except the very beginning as I quickly found out there wasn’t much in the game that really drew me in. Sadly, I really can't say what it is, but I think it's the fact that there isn't a lot of variety on how one does combat, or much involvement with the quests themselves. The skills one uses is limited and the general combat movement quite standoffish. I often found myself just button bashing one button as there aren't more than one or two instants with other skills/spells being on a cooldown. The pace of combat is quite good, it’s quite fast paced but I never really was having fun killing things.

People say there are quests and sure there are. The problem is that at this current stage, many of them have a translation problem which meant I often couldn't be bothered reading up on the quests and getting involved in the lore of things and just found myself just quickly accepting the quest and trying to find my way to the correct route of where the mobs are. The quests are plentiful till around level 30-40 (level 60 is where the exp really slows down) then they thin off and this is where the grinding begins. Sure, there is grinding in all MMORPGs people can argue, but then again these same people soon realize that this game quickly turns into another common theme that resembles almost a whole genre with the label of “Asian Grinders.”  You may wonder did you party and do instances?

Yes, I tried them all. I did do some instances, joined a guild and joined parties but mostly I was solo as I found most others were as well. This was the surprising thing. In this MMORPG, well at least on my server (Delphi), I found most people soloing early on, with more partying as they reach higher levels to overcome the slowness of exp grinding with AOE parties. In general world chat, AOE parties are always being displayed, not to do instances or quests but just to grind mobs in a particular location. As a Werefox (a class that can use a pet as a meat shield for a tank) I was able to level quite fast and level solo but I was always searching for the fun of it all. For an MMORPG, I also found the community doesn't chat much. Is it because there are a lot of diverse people playing?

I did find most world chat was in English and still there was hardly any communication. I can seriously say that my entire server was quiet in general. There was simply no one just chatting. Everyone just seemed to be doing their own thing, but to me who loves to play and read on world chat for fun, I found things too static and empty. I wouldn’t have known if there were 20 people online or 2000. My recommendation is to join a guild, which is where most chat happens. The community was helpful in general which a very positive thing in my opinion for an MMORPG.

Overall, besides this game's stunning graphics there was very little that drew me in and I found myself bored, plain and simple. I think the general nature of the quests being too solo focused combined with the fairly bland choice of combat options made the game abit too repetitive and monotonous for my liking. I too often found myself just going through the motions rather than through anticipation and momentum keen to see what’s beyond. I think this game involves too much grind, others may argue otherwise. If you do not want to play another grinder, this might not be your game. On the other hand, this game is recommended for it’s flying, its graphics and if you just want to kill a bunch a mobs to kill time with. Any comments/thoughts appreciated.

I have tried a LOT of games.I haven't found THE game yet. This is as close as I have found so far.Is it 90% of what I want ..nope.But for now if I am going to play an mmog..this is it.The game needs a North American server or European server badly.Housing is in test on the chinese server. GW need a good bit of fixing. I love the ability to solo...my preferred style.I craft with three different crafters.after searching  for some time..as I said..this is a close as I could get to my next extended game.BTW the music....I love it.I am not a grinder for grinding sake.I am betting on the cum that housing will be there soon and guild warfare will get refocused.

I've enjoyed PW more than the review, but maybe I'm more forgiving because I've played so many bad MMOs recently.

The reviewer is definitely right about the grinding picking up in the 60s.  doesn't have the insane grind level of Silkroad or FFXI, but given the fewer and fewer number of new quests as you level into the 60s, the player is forced to repeat quests much more often.

There are many good ideas in PW and a great deal of game choices that can be made.  There are simple differences in PW which are good ideas that other games could follow suit in and probably make better - say like having underwater pets, or aerial combat, or letting players try ALL of the crafting  professions with 1 character, or having jumping puzzles (albeit only in the early levels and not for elves ;) ).

PW is defintely worth a try for 60 levels or so- and maybe the next version will be better.

Next patch is supposed to focus on high level content...from what I read.

The game has been out for a while now.

I initially started it, but walked away. Possibly because I was a little overwhelmed at first.

The quests? WOW so many and non stop. I liked that, but it was hard to manage them all.

The crafting system is very indepth and takes time and effort. I liked that as well.

The Grind? Well a little slow, but if you quest, you'll level up relatively quick.  The only problem with the quests I had was the insane amount of traveling you had to do for many of them.  Get a pet ride as quickly as possible.

Very good game to play, lots of things to do. I have yet to find myself saying "There is nothing new to do"

Try Mabinogi, thats a lot of PvE dungeon running quests in pts with party quests and solo quests both...kind of a young community tho IMHO.
