Replacing WoW

t0hillyat0hillya Member Posts: 1

I recently had my WoW account "hacked" - not sure which mod the keylogger piggybacked in on but I no longer have 2 of my characters and am broke.  I am thinking this would be a great time to try a new game.  Anyone have any reccomendations?  WoW was my first MMO and I really enjoyed my almost 3 years playing it.

I guess I am looking for somethign with strong Solo/Small group content and a good crafting system.  I am kinda worn out on the "5 nights a week for 4 hours" raid schedule.

Thanks in advance.

I would say either EQ2 or LOTRO.

Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

LotRO, or go back to the classics. Asheron's Call, Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, the only games worth really playing anymore. Or wait for Darkfall.

You don't know that, I don't know that, no one outside development knows that. But, there's nothing we can do either way. There's no innovative game thats coming out. AoC is a combination of WoW and slight DAoC elements on steroids. Warhammer is just a Dark Age of Camelot clone (amazing game) but still no innovation.

On my site I made a code (MMORPG Finder) where players who submitted their WoW characters now say what game they are playing (Or plan to be playing). May give you some ideas. IN the end tho, you have to find a game that is right for you. Think about what aspects of WoW you did enjoy, and look for a game thats strong in that area.

For world of Warcraft players this is the results.

Where players of World of Warcraft are now playing

The results below are based on all characters listed on this site who are from World of Warcraft. Out of 152 characters currently listed, 69 submitted which games they are now playing. Below are the 5 most played games currently being played.

    1. 27 (39%) are now playing Warhammer Online
    2. 12 (17%) are still playing World of Warcraft
    3. 9 (13%) are now playing Age of Conan
    4. 3 (4%) are now playing Guild Wars
    5. 3 (4%) are now playing The Lord of the Rings Online

    Good Luck

Probably in the beta, not everyone will say they are but there are always a few that brag about it.

I left WoW about a month ago and have been looking for a new MMO since then.

    Some things to remember:

You will not find a game with as many players as WoW (obviously)

Most (if not all) other MMOs are not as newbie friendly as WoW

WoW is a very easy MMO in terms of gameplay, expect steep learning curves from other games

WoW is run by a VERY successful company with Scrooge McDuck style money pools, thus they have very high quality servers, fast support etc. Other games do not (to such an extent) Also note that this doesn't always apply, as smaller games with less players to cater for are able to offer support a lot faster.

Blizzard hold the players hands all the way to Sunwell. If you get scammed, they will fix it. If you trash the wrong item, they will fix it. Other game companies do not.

Expect RMT (gold) spam. Blizzard's anti-spam throttles are very extreme (trial accounts cannot talk in public chat channels), other games cannot have this as the steep learning curve makes it necessary to be able to ask for help in public channels.

That said, in my search I tried:

Hellgate - Alright game, would've been my second choice

D&D Online - Like WoW only with slower gameplay

Anarchy Online - Low quality WoW

Fury - Completely PvP if you are into that. Very few players. I found it to be unstable.

Tabula Rasa - Refused to run on my computer. You may have a different experience

PlanetSide - Very few players. Twitch based FPS MMO, if you like CounterStrike etc.

World War II online - If you liked running across the Barrens in WoW you will like this. Run in one direction for 10 minutes, and then get shot and then run for another 10 minutes.

And in the end of started playing EVE. I had actually used the trial of EVE, found it to complicated and left, but ended up going back after I resolved to give it a try instead of being impatient and I have liked it so far, after I looked past the steep learning curve.

(Note the above is obviously based on my biases/opinions so you may find it different).

    Good luck in your search

EDIT: Just read your post more thoroughly. If you are looking for small group content, then I really recommend Hellgate: London. The group content is at max 5-mans and does not require raiding every night of the week. The crafting system revolves around modding weapons and upgrading them through a machine which combines scrap parts with them. As far as I know, there isn't a crafting system like WoW. Only thing I will point out is that the game has evolved A LOT since it went "gold" and most of the bugs have been ironed out, and the customer support from Flagship Studios is very lacking.

Uh, sorry, but from what I heard about Vanguard from ex-WoW players, WoW was in no way better, rather worse, than Vanguard. Talk about 2 days with a server down - happened to people in WoW, I've never seen that in Vanguard.

And I got almost all things that went wrong fixed, in Vanguard, too. So the SOE staff there "holds your hand" as well.

And they fight gold spam as well, and very successfully so.

Of course I have never played WoW so I cant compare directly, but from what I've been told, WoW isnt superior in these fields.
