Colony defense in starport is definently unbalanced. People have expressed thier concerns about griefers stealing starports, blah blah blah. I have some ideas to change it.
#1: Stealing colonies doesnt exactly sound like something a "Good" person would do. Perhaps only people with a negative rep could steal a colony. I am aware that this gives more people an excuse to go "Bad", but thats my opinion
#2: There should be an assimilation period before a colony actually becomes captured. By having an assimilation time, a warning could be sent to the colony owner to come and defend the colony, and recapture it.
#3: Hiring of mercinaries or security guards would be an excellent addition. You could order them to patrol a set of waypoints, and whenever someone not part of the owners corporation comes by, the mercinary or security guard will attack. The guards and mercs would require a daily payment, or they pick up and leave.
#4: Planetary and colony shields should be added so that a person could not just run at the colony regardless of how many turrets are attacking and capture it. The shield would perhaps act like an entry delay. If they tried to enter while the shield is up, they will be frozen for 10 seconds, unable to move or attack, while they are disableing the shield. During this time they are open for attack by turrets, players ect. This would also force the attacker to destroy more of the turrets. when the colony is captured they wont have 50 turrets to pick up and take to one of thier colonies cause they had to destroy many of them so they would not be destroyed while disableing the shield.
#5: Even the weakest of players in time could destroy all the defenses on a planet without a scratch. This is due to the fact that they hide around a corner shooting bullets that bounce around corners, while the turrets aim directly at the person and thier munition detonates upon impact to a wall. This should be fixed by making all weapons stop upon impact to a wall, just like they stop upon hitting another player, turret, beacon, NPC, ect.
#6: Turret types: In addition to the turrets currently available, a Hellbore Turret would make a great addition. Working exactly like a hellbore laser equipped to a ship, it will shoot the red beam at the target once it enters range.
Theres are some of the ideas i have about colony defense. They are quite simple and shouldnt be too hard to code and apply. Colony defense is one of the things dragging this game down, and it would be great of even one of these ideas were applied to the game. Thanx

Once again, it is an economic game. Anyone should be able to 'liberate' property from other players. My thought is that there should be repercussions that arise from within the colony when you capture it. For instance, if you are a bad player, in comparison to the former owner, there should be a revolt and decreased productivity. However, if the former owner was a tyrant, the people will rejoice and productivity will be increased.
For this idea, there would be a set time for colony transition- maybe six hours. Within that time, the effects of colony transition would be felt. Perhaps, even a total colony shut down would result in a revolt for those six hours. A revolt would also kill a certain percentage of the population of a colony. If the former owner comes back within 12 hours and retakes the colony, it will automatically switch back without any revolt or productivity changes.
I would also slap a 3 minute timer for capturing a colony. Within that three minutes you can move and fight, but can't leave the planets surface.
I think this would help alot of the problems of colony defense. If you make it less profitable, then there will be less point to capturing a colony.
