RMS Titanic sank three hours after hitting an iceberg in the early morning of April 15th 1912. Roughly one third of those on board survived.
POTBS initiated server mergers on April 15th with roughly one third surviving.
Yes, I am laughing, I don't know who does FLS' PR but this is priceless.
Could be a freudian slip, after all in the words of FLS' grand imperial poobah Russel Williams - "...we’ve gone back and done a little post-mortem analysis..."

He probably used postmortem in informal way (after event) but I got another chuckle out of the fact that the exact meaning is "after death".
((Thanks Vetarnias for pointing to the Titanic reference.))

The free character transfers are in my opinion too little and too late. It would help a few months ago but now it is just one of many problems. Game balance, economics, flawed PvP etc. are just some of the things on the list that made most of the people leave the game.
It will be hillarious to keep an eye on offiical POTBS forums over next few months. My bet would be that insterad of consolidatign the population the game will continue leaking players. Why?
Some don't want to transfer as they prefered small servers and will quit over that. Number of non English speaking players, minority to be sure but present as a group, will leave because FLS quite simply cannot deliver what it promised - playing French/German/Spanish servers.
Now, best drama will come as all the griefer/ganker adders and snakes will become bunched up together. First they will gank out quickly any potential victims left causing most of the remaining PvE/econ players to pack their bags. After that part will quit for the lack of prey and other simply because they cannot compete.
With safe bubbles of small servers removed a lot of self proclaimed PvP greatness will either pack their bags or try to fight it out against established groups on their new servers. Some will probably succeed, but others will quit in the frustration.
And that, of course, is not counting how now servers will be perma red gank areas and RvR (such as it was) will degenerate even further.
All in all, the old problems and issues stayed unresolved save population density and the later will most likely cause more issues then it solves. And let us not mention that AoC, PvP heavy game, is jsut around the corner.
Watching FLS and POTBS is very informative, I enjoy MMOS' and this is a great way to learn of what to avoid in the future.
When I made the Titanic reference on the PotBS forums, one of their staffers just commented:
"Oh man, the office just went nuts when I yelled this out."
I still have no idea what to make of it. Went nuts? Yelled? I can't believe no-one there made the connection beforehand. I don't want to read too much into what he said, but, according to his account, apparently this was the cause of a small commotion back at FLS headquarters.

Well, judging by their past performance, FLS staff seems rather unflexible in their thinking. I am trying to be charitable here.
My bet would be that the whole thing went something like: Uhh, we didn't know that..., That is not good!, *gets excited and reacts by posting*
I have heard in game chat among society members that they can't wait until AoC comes out, and they are going to migrated over. Causes me to wonder the effect the upcoming AoC release will have on this game, and whether there may be more server merges in the future. Or maybe a meeting scheduled for the parking lot....
The other hot topic in chat is WAR, which, I noticed, has the pre-order collectors boxes, which guarantee a spot in open beta, already on the local Best Buy shelves.
How many will stay with POTBS, how many to AoC, and how many to the WAR open beta?
Stay tuned for the continuing saga......
Beyond that - a redesign or... well you covered that.
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
Oh yes, that has been floating around for awhile and it gets stronger as POTBS goes down. For many it was just a placeholder game after all.
AoC and WAR are both PvP heavy (or PvP only) titles and their target audience are PvPers in all shapes and forms. Precisely the crowd POTBS wanted to net. When those two game release I think there will be slump all across the board as people will rush to try the new toy. Some will stay with new choices but I suspect many will go back to their original titles. I don't think games like EQII and LOTRO have anything to worry about - WOW PvP servers will definitelly be hit and with them small fringe PvP heavy games like POTBS.
Personally I don't think POTBS will survive although there will be a temporary relief when people get annoyed with AoC (it isn't all what the hype said) and while waiting on WAR.
"Post-mortem" is a pretty standard term that has been adopted by many industries, including the software industry. It's typically an in-depth review of how a project proceeded, for better or worse, once completed in order to learn from it.
OP, u may be laughing, and yes they overestimated themselves i guess but theres a healthy population, more then enough to keep the game profitable for FLS
but ofcourse we have to wait till AOC and WAR hit the shelves
MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
Game will probably continue like Vanguard, Matrix etc.
Real shame these bad releases do not die out so the industry would learn to only release good quality products. Until that happens we will continuously suffer from these bogus game releases, I'm afraid.
I would have to agree, POTBS is type of the game that drags quality down and that bothers me as a consumer. Charging full price for a half product is something I cannot swallow. LOTRO is a polished and workign product for example (please let us not go in game's relative merits or lack of them) and I can play it for $10 per month due to holiday offer. I am not going to pay $15 for shoddy goods, if and when the goods are fixed I might think of buying but not before. It is not the money but the principle, that beign said if I start throwing out $15 on any piece of junk out there I will end up broke even if I have millions.
I don't find that funny at all. Real people died when the Titanic sunk. People will probably lose their jobs with Pirates of the Burning Sea. I'm trying to figure out why you are having so much fun with PotBS' bad release. Did FLS fire you or something?

I readily agree with you that it is in bad taste -- and I'm the first to have made the comparison. But the Titanic at the same time has served as a metaphor for practically everything, from class struggle to blind belief in the triumph of science over nature to just any lost cause in modern history. That quote about rearranging deck chairs pops up in the oddest of places from time to time.
Nonetheless, I used this to point out that as bad as timings go it was probably the worst choice FLS could have made to announce mergers, considering Pirates of the Burning Sea is a nautical game. As the OP stated, it's one of those nightmares of public relations.
As for FLS people, I sure hope the company turns around and stays in business for a long, long time. Nonetheless, that will not stop me from exposing what I believe are the flaws of the game, especially when the lead developer said 9 months ago that gankers would wait for the next big failure to come along, and that now another developer is harping on how there is no crying in the red circle...
Bad taste - maybe but that can be disputed, still an amusing comparison neverthless.
FLS made a poor product and if people lose job over it I am not going to be sorry or shocked. If I did as poorly on my job as FLS did on theirs, I would lose the job for the simple reason I am not delivering what I was paid for. So yes, if it means less software garbage in the future I am all for FLS tanking and all of their employees losing their jobs. I don't get my kicks from possbile problems that might pose for FLS employees but that is one of the pitfalls of free market, a principle that doesn't originate from my nick of woods.
History is full of disasters but I am not a fan of weltschmerz, past cannot be changed. The surrent issues are another matter entierly.
Actually, i will cancel my subscription to Potbs this month and start AoC. But i don't believe Potbs deserves to be called Titanic. I still think it's a great game and is different from other MMO's in many ways. Merging teh servers in the 4th month of a new MMO can not be addressed " too late". The measure is taken at the right time.
Lots of ppl might quit the game but Potbs will survive and will have lots of core players. As long as the Open Sea pvp battles are well designed and unique, this game will never die. I'll check on Potbs back in a few months too.

I would wager that a lot of people did very fine work on POTBS as far as industry standards go, but they will also suffer the fate of those few who made the poor choices to lead the game to where it is.
It sounds just like another company that I know and is strangely attached to this one.
Some of the bigger PVP societies are choosing this time to leave the game as well. I know for a fact that Sturmgrenadier is shutting down their POTBS portal. Be interesting to see how many other major socieites call it quits as well.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
It should really worry FLS that even the PvP game cannot retain PvPers.
