Greetings,
I've noticed that a lot of this board's content is focused on how to stick with the game through the initial learning curve. The object of this post is to make a step by step list of things to do when starting out. I am requesting the help of anyone who isn't sick of this type of post.
What I'm looking for is something very generic. Just point the reader in the right direction (links) and let them research each one by themselves. Example:
1. Character creation guides (I'll need help finding these).
2. Play through the tutorial and the training missions.
3. Read this FAQ.
4. Keep your questions in the rookie's channel.
5. Research Corporations.
OK, I've updated this, but since my browser and the editor don't agree, I am having issues with posting links.
Feel free to flame, or please add/rearrange steps.

Start with the trial and run through the in-game tutorial and starter missions. There are plenty of people willing to help from there, the tutorial will give you the basics in navigating and combat and the missions will put some Isk in your wallet.

www.eve-i.com has some great tools.
I can recommend the character manager, which makes it easy to understand and plan skills for several toons.
I can also recommend the EveDude Plus tool, which makes comparison of ships easy.
www.eve-db.com has a good item database.
http://members.cox.net/webcore/eve has a good FAQ that is accessable through the in-game browser.
For the character creation, then the following is important to know when you.
- Toons with mainly industrial goals should go for high memory stats and secondly for high intelligence stats.
- Toons aiming for researcher, should go for intelligence and then memory as a second.
- Toons aiming for fighterpilot, should go for perception and then willpower as a second stat.
- Allround toons should go for stats in the following order
1. Memory
2. Intelligence
3. Perception
4. Willpower
5. Charisma
For school/career there is only one valid choice, which is Military School -> Operation -> Command -> Captain Training.
This career will give you over 100.000 skillpoints from the start and all the skills you get through this choice are usefull skills and most of them is needed for your next progression step.
Some of the other choices might look more promising, but you will quickly learn that you need to train the skills you would recieve with the suggested choice here, and it would be faster to choose the suggest choice and then train the skills that looked interesting, than the other way around.
When you first start the game, then training the 6 skills in the learning section up some levels might be a good idea.
If you expect to stay with the game for a longer time, then get all, except empathy, to atleast level 4.
Empathy should be trained to atleast level 3 though.
This will really be hard the first 2 weeks, because these skills give you no benefit right away, but if its done, then the other skills will train alot faster in future.
Also when you enter, then do all the tutorial missions and continue to the next suggested agent, where you will recieve a sequential mission consisting of 8 sub-missions, which in the end will give you a +1 implant.
If you are patient, then make 2 alts and run the same missions again, untill you have one of each of 5 +1 implants. If you get multiple implants of the same type, then they typically sell for 2-3 millions, which is pretty damn good money for a newbie.
Good Info Zuko!
I want to keep this to a step by step list for now. I didn't make that clear when I first posted this. Any more suggestions?
