Quick Review - Open Beta - The first hour

I live in Sweden so it's getting pretty late. Connection

has dropped a few times, but less then I expected.

Anyway. Before I go to bed, here is a quick review

of the Open Beta.

Performance (5/10)

This is the sad part of the game. I got a Q6600 (quad)

processor, 2 GB of memory and a 8800 GTX card. Still

I have to run the game on lowest settings (1920x1200)

to avoid "hickups" while playing. With high settings

the game just stops while dynamically loading content.

I monitored how the game uses the cores of my CPU.

Sadly the game doesn't seem optimzed and mainly uses

1 out of 4 CPU cores.

Graphics (8/10)

Even with low graphics settings, the game looks awesome

and runs pretty smooth. Animations looks great, character

and surroundings also look great. The cloth, weapon and

armor that you pick up from dead NPCs all look unique.

Sound (8/10)

Fantastic sound. Funcom has made a great job :)

Everything from ambient sound to combat music

is high quality.

Gameplay (7/10)

When I was playing, AOC felt like a mix of EQ2 and Guildwars.

Not that it's a bad thing. What i like the most is the combat

system. It's complex and forces you to think. But if done

right, the fight is quickly over and you don't feel like you

are grinding.

Overall (7/10)

This game has a huge potential. Funcom has taken the right

path. Sure the game has bugs, but nothing serious that makes

it unplayable.

Age of Conan feels fresh, and I know I've only scratched

the surface. I'm pretty sure that most of you AOC fanboys

will be very satisfied and not disapointed.

As I play during this weekend i will try update this

review if anyone is intrested.

/Cheers

well me and a couple other thousand people cant even log in. they have told us several different things over the course of the evening. the beta was aslo delayed all day long. personally the authentification failure bug that is still there and blocking the thousands of people makes it pretty unplayable to me.

on a side note i am glad your enjoying the experience.  i am sure with it being a beta the lag will be better in release. thanks for the review

Make sure you are creating a seperate OB account within your funcom account.

This is when you enter you beta key.

Considering they recomend a dual core processor, this news is highly disapointing to me.

No big surprise there really. Vanguard and Tabula Rasa were the same way. They claimed to support multicore systems but really didn't. It would be like 80/20 on a dual core at best.

Dunno what the hell is wrong with ur system. Im on a intel core 2 duo clocked at 2.5ghz 2 gig ram and a 8800 GTS. i got 50-60fps solid on medium settings no hiccups apart from occasional lag spike.
