Everyone keeps calling this a stress test. Wasn't it an open beta before? Wierd how it BECAME a stress test after everyone logged in and it was performing horribly. If they had said..hey run over to file planet and sign up for a chance to stress test an old outdated client...id still have my 8 bucks :P
Comments
yea it was suppose to be a showcase. its failed so now its become a "stress test"? so now people who payed for a fileplanet account really have "paid to beta" which is sad.
Whats your point? Or are you just complaining about $8?

My point..is that ...I feel they thought the game would perform better than it has. When it performed miserably..suddenly it was a stress test. That was NEVER indicated before the beta started. they also never mentioned this whole "old build" nonsense before either.
performed horribly for some people. Others, like me, had great performance.

Think about that, why would they mention something like that? UNLESS somethings happened and or they wanted to see how the old client would perform for some reason. Fact is there are many un answered questions (just like there always is with a new highly anitcipated game) that we will have to wait and see in order to get our answers.

its 8 bucks. are we really complaining about 8 dollars? I could walk around campus and find more then 8 bucks and these are poor cheap college students...
Ok..lets be clear..we arent talking about the 8 bucks. One luxury of being an adult is that 8 bucks means very little to me. What does matter is that I suspect that funcom is trying to mask their very poor client performance by suddenly renaming it a stress test. If it was a stress test, and that was their intention...why in gods name did they call it an open beta?

well if you're gonna do a big promotion with fileplanet and invite 50k people as well as lift the nda i would think before hand you would say " look this isn't going to be pretty in fact its gonna be ugly" then people would understand. however they didn't say that because it was suppose to be a flawless showcase. what they're saying now about "oh its a stress test" yada yada is just damage control. its viral
Here is the e-mail I recieved before open beta testing began:
Welcome to the Age of Conan Beta!
We are happy to invite you to the savage world of Hyboria, and we hope you will have great fun in the next few days. Our servers will open tonight at 2200 GMT / 1700 EST, and from this point on you are free to play as much as you like!
Prior to starting your journey we want to give you some important information about what to expect, and where you can get help should you need it.
First of all, remember that you are playing a beta version of Age of Conan, where we on purpose are stressing our servers to simulate a hectic launch environment. This means that you may experience technical issues as you start playing.
Simulating launch is what final stress testing is all about, but we will monitor all of this closely to make your experience as good as possible.
Since there is no NDA on the Open Beta you are completely free to speak about your experiences in public, and you can also take screenshots and videos should you wish to. Together with IGN we have established forums which will be staffed by Funcom Customer Service and Community representatives. There you can discuss any topic you like. Should you have any questions, or would like the latest upto date info on potential technical issues and solutions, these forums are our main venue for communication for as long as the Open Beta last.
You can find the IGN forums here: http://vnboards.ign.com/age_of_conan/b22995/.
We would ask you to keep in mind that this is not the full and final version of the game. You will get a significant taste of what we have created, and you will be able to play all classes and cultures. You are also able to test our PvP mini-games. To join a match simply the upper left icon with two people, and go to the PvP tab to apply for a match.
Prior to starting your experience you may watch two tutorial videos explaining the combat system and our interface. Links to their location will be found on the IGN forums and on the Age of Conan forums (http://community.ageofconan.com/) later tonight. We advise you to view these videos prior to playing.
We thank you sincerely for your willingness to aid, and your patience should any issues occur. Above all we hope you will have lots of fun as you crush your enemies
We’ll see you in Hyboria soon!
Regards, The Age of Conan development team
I'm not sure where everyone is getting the idea that a beta is meant to act as a showcase... in most cases it's safe to assume that something will be used as intended, in this case... stress testing. But I'm not going to go into details on my opinion of the game, as this isn't what the OP is asking, but I'll just answer his dilemma's with the answer that it is and was intended to be a stress test from the start.
In regards to requiring a fileplanet open beta to begin with... considering it's an open beta offering this should be what you expected, but apparently it isn't for a lot of people... seemingly everyone is thinking it's meant to be two or so weeks of free game time. The reason you join a beta is to give charity to an MMORPG... they simply don't have enough people to get as much feedback as they can from offering betas, which is what they did. You're doing it primarily to "test" the game.
Allow me to repeat myself:
THE OB WAS INTENDED AS A STRESS TEST FROM THE BEGINNING, just needed to clear that up.
If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
how are the mini games? i understand the gamespot pvp event went pretty well just curious if mini games are in a similar state still.

Out of 50k people how many do you really think are playing?
They lifted the NDA for real? Where are all the player videos? All these flamers and no one is posting video to back up they're bitching and moaning?

I get that the purpose of a beta is to test the game. i do. This isn't my first beta. What I don't get is ...why in the hell would they need us to "test" a client that they claim has already been revamped. I am too lazy to look for the link but one of the devs stated that the fileplanet beta was also a chance for publicity.
You guys who think the game is going to get instantly amazing when it launches will most likely be disappointed while you are staring at the 12 or 13 hundreth loading screen.
I"m sorry, but an open beta can't incorporate a stress test?

Serph toze kindly has started a walk-through. https://youtu.be/UIelCK-lldo
thread opener has a point
This is a beta with the full game release within 2 weeks
What do i find
1) No directx 10
2) Why are we beta testing a client that wont even make it in retail
3) Issues with class/profession/skill balannce/quest/npc I can agree
But what are these technical issues with huge loading times and considering the way the game is instanced it taking a lot of time
I like the game personally but this beta so far has left a bad taste for me
From preorder now I will wait fo a week or 2 and get feedback from people who are playing on vista
Ah, well that my friend is everyone's main question. I was merely responding to the fact that the open beta was meant to be a stress test from the beginning and that it should have been what was expected. What I dislike is how close towards release they are deciding to do this. Many of the things they are doing are problems that should have been covered in closed beta, and we simply can't blame it on things such as "it's a different client than the actual client they will use" or "it is merely a stress test"... my issues do not concern those two subjects. To be honest, I think the game will have a decent, but not as good as expected launch. They will get a high amount of people, but it won't stick for long if things turn out the way they are now.

sure it can. I just think the name change timing was kind of telling. Before it released it was "open beta" ...after release its a "stress test". The subtelty of this will, of course, be lost on anyone who refuses to believe this game is less than perfect.

Short of calling you liars....and I'm not doing that. I find it difficult to believe all of these"its running great for me " posts.
I am on a gigabyte motherboard. 4 gigs of ram. 10k hard drive, 8800 gt,, dual core processor (3.0 ghz per)...the upper end versions of all...not the cheap memory...budget 8800...etc....
My performance is horrid. So either people whos performance is "wonderful" have odd definitions of wonderful...or the client is picky about where it wants to run for no good reason.
Guess what other game had the same issue as that second one?
you're stress testing the SERVERS with a client version chosen specifically to generate artificially heavy load.
Hope that clears it up for you.
I seriously do hope, though, that at some point they patch you guys up to a more recent build so that you can actually have some fun.

same here8800gt 512 mb
dual core 2 E6750
same horrrid experience so far
AMD64 3200 single core
2gb DDR400
Ati X1650 512 AGP
Medium settings, with some tweaks. 3.0 shader, no bloom, AA, AS, etc.
Framerates 20-28 FPS in Tortage day during busy hours.
30+ in all other areas that I have seen so far (up to mid 20's).
Different builds perform differently, of course. This was this morning's CB client. Last night's was different, and 2 days ago performance sucked ass as they had us testing shaders.
Havn't tried the OB client yet, but I hear enough bad things to scare me off from it.
Running OB client on amd64 3400+, gf7600gt, 1,5gb ram with 1680x1050 resolution and everything on low except terrain and texture (medium) with 25-30 fps in tortega and 40-60 outside tortega with absolutely no stuttering.

Short of calling me a liar ... sad indeed.
Here is a short clip I just recorded with my game at 1920x1200 resolution. Keep in mind that in order to record this I had to use Fraps which decreases frame rates. Even with that situation, the game ran smooth.
