Funcom has announced that US Conan fans that are currently playing in the Fileplanet beta for Age of Conan can take part in a leveling contest for the chance to win prizes.
Great prizes to be won for U.S. players on Fileplanet. Who levels up the fastest?
The 'Beta Leveling Contest' has started on Fileplanet. Players who level two (2) class types to the maximum level 13 in the LEAST amount of time will be declared potential winner and get a chance to win great prizes like Signed Collector's Editions, In-Game Virtual items and much more.

I'm not entirely sure I understand why FunCom's PR department thinks it's imperative that they widely publicize a contest for an open beta that by their own admission is not actually an open beta, nor do I understand why mmorpg.com felt compelled to email me about this "news" since it really could have been better-handled by funcom's internal email list, but, um, thanks for the hot tip?
You're kidding right? Level 13 max? 'How fast you can do it' contest promoted by the publisher? What happens if the results are under 24 hours or something like that? You think I'm gonna pony up 50 bucks and pay monthly for a game that can be leveled that quickly? Forget it. I want my next MMO to have substance and compelling content so (1) I don't feel that the leveling process is a grind , and (2) so there aren't a bunch of maxed out kiddies running around complaining of no end-game content other than PVP.
BTW, I'm not in the beta, so why would I care about a contest that should have been posted on their beta forums only... The results certainly shouldn't be publicized as widely as the contest.
I'll also totally agree that a game that takes longer to level in.. by default has Substance and compelling content. ONLY a game that takes a long time to level in could have either of those. In fact I think the best game ever would be something called like "Infinitely Leveling".
I'll also agree that only "kiddies" level up quickly.. no adult would ever be capable of doing such a thing.
Its odd on how much of this we see things the same way...
Considering the prizes are all coming from Funcom, and the announcement quoted in the OP is from funcom, I'd think it's Funcom's ridiculously bad PR department that's doing this. But yeah I agree entirely, too.
I guess some people have to bitch about something ...
"I don't give a sh*t what other people say. I play what I like and I'll pay to do it too!" - SerialMMOist
What a load of sh!t........so basically all the losers who have no life and no real life responsibilties will get these prizes. This is just another reason to really start hating mmorpg's altogether, especially betas.
Welcome to mmorpg's where you are rewarded for being an exploiter, script user, no lifer with no real world responsibilties and can play 24/7, f@ck'em all.
So. why is it that this is only open to those who live in the U.S. .. ARE THEY THE ONLY ONES WHO LIVE ON THIS PLANET? what about the rest of us who want to play this game who live elsewhere..? oh no. it might take 1 day to lvl to 13. if you arent in the beta how the hell do you know. it might take 3 or 4 days.. if you feel the need to complain about something at least make it relevant..
killa was here
It takes a few hours to reach 13. Levelling is very quick at the start - usually just hitting level 6 by the end of the beach section/entry to Tortage.
It's moderately fast after that - you can pretty much do the destiny questline to 13 but there is a bit of running around and it's solo. It's probably best to team and use the double XP tokens to farm in heroic instances, I think that type gives more XP.
I imagine you can keep trying until you can't beat your best time any more.
Those are fantastic prizes anyway - lifetime + all the pre-order bonuses and some nice hardware.
ummm... this conan beta contest.... is it for computer or PS3?
I hate that too... too many Europeans can't participate in MMOs' contests.
Signatures are boring things.
Its all about money from the beginning: only FilePlanet subscribers = possible age of conan beta testers. I hate this strategies of making money, but this THE f.ing reality. And btw, what the hell mmorpg.com have to do with this ? to close my newsletter from this reason ?
I guess some people have to bitch about something ...
Thornrage apparently is avoiding all the criticism of exactly how FunCom refusal to have an open beta has actually progressed. It's made it clear that indeed, money is an issue to progress, hence the FilePlanet mess and the too-early-for-prime-time May 20 release of this game.
First of all, I hate FilePlanet and never use it. I won't pay for something that causes problems in and of itself especially when non-fanbois don't really need it.
Second, why is anyone surprised? FunCom's handling of this game clearly shows most experienced, mature MMO gamers that they have learned little about properly releasing a game since the Anarchy On Line debacle.
Third, there are two betas, ongoing until release. One is the FilePlanet Beta (notice I refrain from using the term "open beta" because it is not open) for the FilePlanet fanbois. The other beta is the closed beta, with no cost whatsoever to the player, and which is a much more worthwhile experience. Both betas are continuing until the actual release of the game.
For those in the know, MMO "Jedi" have a pool with a real prize -- entrants have picked a date as to when the released version of Age of Conan will actually reflect a non-problematic, properly released MMO (for example, Lord of the Rings Online as the latest model of a proper release to emulate) -- so far, dates picked are 30 days to over 180 days (aka Anarchy On Line) after May 20th's release.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME ??This is the EXACT crap i been eluding to in MANY of my posts.Anyone that would play MMO's for the sake of trying to speed level is an ..well you know what they would be i don't need to spell it out.MMO's are suppose to be about content and community NOT a race. These are NOT single player games where nothing matters but trying to end the game.If your hanging out in a game with a bunch of friends are you going to go off and outlevel them as fast as you can,so that way you can't even party with them anymore? of course not. This is the mindset of a single minded player who shouldn't be playing an mmo,but instead play single player games.
Who in there right mind would pay hard earned money just to see a level number rise >>>1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8 wow fun !.../sarcasm off.If that is all players want from a game ,then why not send out some brochures that offer instant levels for dbl monthly costs?Hey why not offer an instant level 30 for a mere 30 dollars extra? pfft lame.Actually item mall games do this by offering you dbl or trpl XP at a cost.Very lame.
You can say whatever like "it's only a beta contest" it's not like it's your paying to play yet.The problem is it's encouraging and sending out the wrong message about MMO's and what there gameplay/community should be about.Just what i or we need to see is some more of the same i see all the time.Little kids bragging how they know everything because they already have 4 maxxed out players.Players acting l33t and calling others noobs, all because they could speed level through levels they become instant gods..pfft.We have all seen this in forums and in gameplay far too often ,we need to see it dissappear,so people can start bragging about proper things like there"COMMUNITY" is the best around.
QUIT encouraging this junk ! grrr .it really gets me miffed, that';s why we have horrible community games like WOW ,because there player base falls into this trap,i don't want to see it continue into other games.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Waits for beta keys to be handed out to join in contest....
Look at Lineage 2 what become, they allow people to put robots on game and farm level or/and items (money), and result is simple: more robots = more game accounts = more money for NCsoft ! I like Lineage 2 from the begining but i don't play because of this, i prefer WoW (the best MMORPG game ever !).

Or, perhaps Funcom will be tuning xp to slow things down a bit? Or maybe they are monitoring to see what kind of exploits people can come up with early on, even if its only 13 levels? Or, they're just waving a carrot to get more subscribers for fileplanet....
As for people who pay hard-earned money to watch numbers go up -- take a look at all of the achievers who burn through content and then complain about lack of content and endgame. You can find them in every game.
