Funcom f@#ked up by releasing a open and closed beta!

First of all I'm in both the open and closed beta. The closed beta is running the most recent version of code and the open beta is running code that is almost 2 months old or at least until the patch tonight.

This is the stupidest thing I ever have heard of!

First of all "OPEN BETA" is like an OPEN HOUSE. Now you wouldn't have an open house is your house is not clean, the lawn hadn't been mowed or the house smells like cat poo... But aparently Funcom doesn't mind.

To invite the public into an open beta and not run the most current code is just stupid! In fact I would call it SOE stupid!

Fact open beta does NOT play like closed beta.

Fact is this stupid move by Funcom

I agree I dont understand the thinking here. but  there would still be all the haters no matter what build was offered. and yes the closed beta is alot and I mean  alot better.

Well, let us see. Majority dislikes open beta due to techincal issues, and that is not counting gameplay concepts. Those that claim to be in closed beta seem to be split on the issue, some claiming it is completely different while others claiming it is exactly the same.

I give more credit to the naysayers as they are stronger in numbers and their reports match.

And that is not to mention the fact that AoC is a horribly linear, zoned game aimed at ushering people endgame in big guilds for both PvE and PvP.

The "open" beta isn't really open... I think they only care about the publicity Fileplanet will do for them because there are many people who won't get into beta but have now heard of the game (which they wouldn't without Fileplanet).

That seems to be the main reason for the "open" beta... not actually showing their game.

So is it confirmed that they will be brining open beta in sync with closed beta tonight?

Nope but why else would they patch it? Why patch older code unless it's newer? Guess we will see

Just look around at many forums, the so called miracle build this closed beta is, is not better by ALOT of testers as well. WHy should anyone beleive what you say and not the ones saying it s crap. All the OB people got thrown at them is crap. So do i take your and a handful other people on here defending this game like it s the holy grail, or other peoples take on it which is the exact opposite. Neither, i ll take what i have and access it. This means it s crap simple a that. Wheres Funcom out here defending it or are you few the only line of defense these boards have? It s really one dumb move on their part.

The fact that %33 say they dont like it is enough . Thats alot of possible subs they re losing initially and maybe forever. Its ok your game will be fine but it won t have the potential customer base it could have if you didn t have such a piss poor company running it.

the majority of the people enjoy the game. It's the people who have something to accomplish by bitching that make noise here.

Listen to CB global chat on any server...you hear one or two people bitch per day. The rest of us love the game.

As i understood it they would patch in the old code into Closed beta and seems like it happened.

Closed betaplayers can report what they are doing from 1-13 now and that's it but seems like their version gotten a lot worse the last two days.Maybe because they patched in some code from open beta as they said they would?

    Hello Everyone!

First off! Thank you very much for your great input and terrific feedback so far, it really helps us to identify issues and make the game much better for launch. Due to the incredible push we have seen the last hours I wanted to inform you about the biggest annoyances some of you have experienced so far ? and what we are doing about them.

I want to say that it seems to me that most people are really enjoying the gameplay despite some technical issues. This is great news to me, but this is not the focus for this update, rather I just want to say ?We see, we learn, we hear and we are fixing issues!?

    Stalling

Some people call it ?lagging?. Some people call it ?hanging?. We have named it ?stalling? internally, so that is what I am going to call it. This is the experience where the client hangs for some fraction of a second up to some seconds. This is, almost without exception, run-time compilation of shaders (a shader is ?slang? for code running on the graphics card). This is a known issue, we have identified where we need to fix things, and we are working on a solution.

The best way to minimize these stalls is to set the rendering options to one of the ?presets? (low, medium or high). Tweaking the rendering settings manually, increase the chance of stalls. Our recommended low, medium and high have some more previously compiled shaders, so it should be better. It won?t be stall-free though, not until the final version is out! If you have a worse experience in Tortage Day, than Tortage Night ? this is most likely the case.

If you struggle with performance generally, turn on LOW settings. This includes Shader model 2 shaders, disabling ?bloom? and has a short viewdistance. This helps a lot. Turn the viewdistance up again in the settings if you want to see more of the world after you do this?

If you experience stalls remember that you are testing beta-code. Getting data from you is our way to make the launch experience so much better for everyone.

    Zoning or loading times

Differently from the stalls, this issue does not happening to everyone. This issue is actually new to Open beta. It does not happen on the closed beta. We are patching closed beta with the exact same code / data as we speak, so we can try to find the reason. Be patient and we shall prevail here too

    Memory leaks

Your client running out of memory happens gradually, especially from zoning. By restarting the client, you should be fine for some time depending on your system. We have a host of fixes for this on its way to you, and we aim to update this in a day or two. Every time the client crashes, we get a message that helps us better understand the issue. What you are doing is terrific work that will enable us to fix this!

And then again, some are not experiencing any of this at all.

On behalf of the whole Funcom Conan Development team working around the clock,

    Gaute Godager

LOL . This is my point. What you re saying is the opposite of what other closed beta people are saying. So as i explained people in OB are only able to see what they get, which is a crappy build of the game. Now why should i believe you and not a guy i know at a local EB games that plays closed as well. he said and i quote "I wouldn t pay for that load of shit game" anyways defend away it s humorous.

They have an open beta which has the problem but they have to patch it in the closed version to fix it? Why do they still refuse to patch the open beta version with their current internal working one?

They do however admit that in no way do they treat their open beta test servers as real test servers, otherwise they would use the feedback from their open beta testers, wouldnt they?

They have had some of the best marketing in the genre so far, how can they completely f*&k it up in the last 3 weeks??????

Not any more boggling like the other champs out there like... SOE,

I've come to the conclusion that most managers of MMO's out there are complete morons. There really should be a test one takes to lead in a company. It should test one's IQ, common sense and situational logic. If you fail then your options in said company should be, lacky, janitorial, food server, lawyer..

Fact is that the Open beta isent a free trail..

it is a stress testing phase.  and if they let to many ppl into the game where there is still bug plenty of them will might not play the complete version of the game..

    so stop whining and wait...

Actually i think it should of been the other way around. The closed beta got the buggy code while the open beta got the perfect code. It would get them more customers who loved the OB and get more subscribers.

  • DiekfooDiekfoo Member Posts: 583

One of the purpose with tests like this is to actually overload the servers preferable more than they can handle, to get good statistics and know how to tune the servers for the masses. Thats one reason why MMO comapines have open betas.

And as people allready have said, we are still in the beta. This is not the final product.
