After a 25% subscriber decline since it's peak summer 2007, The Lord of the Rings Online™ having launched a year ago (April 2007) and they want you to help them celebrate! That is why they are giving past subscribers 120 hr. free LOTRO access from May 8-12, 2008!

Play your old characters, check out the LOTRO Anniversary celebration events, explore new areas, and tackle new quests. Just log into your LOTRO account from May 8-12, 2008 and Turbine will take care of the fun and adventure.

Those reinstalling the client, notice it has about 14,270 files to update... (likely that does not include Book 13) that may take a day or four through broadband. Not much chance to patch before the 12th through dial-up; (est 14 hrs through 96KB/s dsl) patches to 9.1GB.

Turbine is also bringing back the us$9.99 monthly and us$199 lifetime Founder's subscription plan offers (for after the 12th to continue playing.)

I'm always glad to see these promotions. It means more people will try the game and increases the chance that some might stick around for a while.

In regards the claim of decline by the OP quoting mmogchart.com, the fact that Turbine has not released their subscription numbers means that there is no basis for a claim for decline. By the same token, there's no basis for a claim of increasing numbers either.

I have to agree with what your saying about the decline in subs reported by the OP.

Here's a little snippet of how they predicted LoTRO subs. (http://www.mmogchart.com/analysis-and-conclusions/)

"The Lord of the Rings Online (Accuracy Rating: B)"

    and

    "
B – This indicates that while some of the data points shown may be official, a substantial number come from press articles, unproven inside sources, or other indirect means. The numbers may not be exact for the MMOG in question, but are certainly in the ballpark."

Therefore, these are just best-guess estimates.  There's really no actual proof to back them up.  Therefore, I personally take a grain of salt whenever someone comes here and posts doom and gloom about sub numbers from mmogchart.com unless the data is backed up by actual data from the producers of the mmorpg in question.

Anyways, it is a good thing that Turbine is pumping out these promotions to get players to try and come back.  I will be trying this 4-day trial, as when I played the game last (a few months after launch) I was burnt out on mmorpgs and didn't stick with the game.  Maybe this time will be different.

  • SevenwindSevenwind Member UncommonPosts: 2,188

I will never believe in mmogchart. If you believe numbers from "unproven inside sources" then I tend to think you'll believe anything. I'd rather get facts from the company themselves than that site. He's a fraud out looking for attention and has been called on it many times.

And then again I don't care what the subs are. Not my job to worry how many subscribe to these mmorpgs. If I find the game fun, then I'll subscribe. If I need a break I'll unsub for awhile. I've done that to many mmorpgs.

But it seems everytime a game company does some kind of promotion these posts start showing up claiming they losing numbers, and here we go quoting the imfamous mmorpg chart. "On no... Dooooommmm", "I predict it will shut down in a year".

What's wrong with trying to find better ways to promote your product?

I think they have done a great job using this promo. I have seen a bunch of people ont the forums get lifetime subs because of the $100 dollar drop. I also see a bunch of people that played in beta or soon after that didn't get into then say they are loving it now. So I think this anniversary promotion that Turbine is putting on has been a great success, and should only get bigger the closer we get to the expansion's release.

AoC will launch soon. tTey want  explayers to return to the game so they dont go to AoC forever. If they are playing Lotro, and paying the monthly fee most of them may stay there abd bypass AoC launch. Smart move btw.

    Let's just remember:

Even though the OP makes this look like some type of press release... it isn't.  Turbine is offering the free play days as a welcome back offer for their one year anniversary of LOTRO, not because of a drop in subscriptions.

The supposed 25% decline in subscriptions is based on mmorpgchart.com which is at best an educated guess that the webmaster makes.  Some of his estimations are based on actual numbers released by companies, but Turbine's numbers have NOT been released (as another poster in this thread noted).

LOL I don't think that will be much of a problem. WAR maybe, can't say there but AoC, not a f'ing chance

    I miss DAoC

I actually plan to load it back up...

Since my business has taken off, I have gained more time to goof off in several games (go figure...but, thats the bonus of owning your own company)

Right now, EQ2 is still my game of choice...but, I also love AoC and their beta...which has been fantastic...

I also got the Tabula Rasa return for free mail, and loaded that up...and then logged back off...lol

Hopefully LOTRO will finally make me stay this time...I mean...it is cheap (9 bucks a month for 3 month scrips...), and they have added fishing, housing...and with EQ2 and AoC, 3 games to split up time between should rock...

And my latest computer, which seems to eat up EQ2 and Age of Conan may fix my hitching issues from before...

The beta was horrible for me for AOC and I am holding off I know the retail may be better but I have an awesome comp and all the choppiness and crashes turned me off. I got out of WOW and went to LOTRO until AOC came out I quit about 2 months ago or close to it. And now since I played AOC and seen I do not think it will last for me in the end I will go back to LOTRO casually and wait for WAR lol.

I'm so buzzed I was naturally thinking 'Hey I didn't give this game much of a chance I'll taken another look' and 'shezam!' its f2p this weekend :) The lifetime membership is appealing if you're loaded but making that sort of commitment to a game doesn't suit us jaded old vets that have seen games fall from grace in a matter of weeks.

Yes, the timing is certainly opportune, and perhaps if they gave me a bit more time (120 hour window isn't enough) I might have considered it (wondering how it would look/run on my new box)

But these few days aren't worth my time to do the download I'm afraid.  Back to EVE

    Well

     I dont get it...

I tried to play for a bit...but, the hitching was still horrible...and this is on 3 NEW systems...

    E8400 with 6mb cache, 8800GT, X-Fi gamer, 4 gigs, XP

    E6850 3Ghz, 3870 512mb, 3 gigs, onboard sound, XP

    E6600 oc'd to 3Ghz, 8800GTS 640, 3 gigs, 7.1 Bluegears hardware Dolby Live card, Vista

All had hitching...no matter what setting

I also have upgraded to 16Mb cable...and latency is at 60-70, no firewalls, no AV, no antispyware. I tried all the tricks in the forums...(yes, allowfakefullscreen is false, and set the Framerate slider to 60)

    Stuttering and hitching...dangit

The UI has been improved slightly...yet, small fonts were still used on skills..And the game looks so pretty...but, I just could not get into it anymore...

Back to AoC...which everyone is complaining about...yet runs so much smoother...

    Sorry guys!

haha I had a great quote from an aggrovated eve player until a mod deleted it, it went something like:

"Yes it did take me longer to pay my car off than become proficient at eve"
