Funcom has published preliminary rules for role-playing servers in Age of Conan.
These are the rules we are considering for the Roleplaying-tagged servers for Age of Conan.
We are extremely interested in the feedback of our hardcore roleplayers on this issue and hope you will let us know your thoughts in this thread. Please note nothing is final. We’re planning a meeting to talk out some of the issues we’re already seeing, so now is the perfect time to give us your input.
Preliminary Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures Roleplaying Server Rules
All names must fit within the universe of Hyboria. Sephiroths or Pikachus or names that are out of place with the setting are not permitted. This is in addition to our usual naming policy (for example, no copyrighted names).

I wonder how they will enforce the rules?
It could be sweet with somethin like ark org or something that ao had. because if the only way to get help or report is by tickets wich only gets solved after days that will ruin the server totally.
gm or similar should be active in game at any given time regardless of timezone

RP rules are great and all but they are rarely enforced...which is sad.
Funcom is asking hardcore players for their input. Isn't that like asking the fox to guard the henhouse?
Read that again. It said "asking Hardcore ROLEplayers for their input".
It also doesn't say how they would be enforcing the roleplay rules.
So...
0 for 2
Besides, I think it would be more like "asking the Hells Angels to guard the Rolling Stones" ( Obscure, but I was trying to avoid using "Nazi's" )

And the next thing you know, they'll have a contract out for Gaute's life. :P
Hold one, no Copyrighted names? Do they realize, that almost any name you can think up has probably been published and or copyrighted somewhere for something...not to mention I believe it's only copyright infringing if you use it for profit.

If brute force isn't working, you are not using enough.
Don't argue with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
Er no, try and use the name Coca Cola anywhere, for any reason and expect them to sue the snot out of you. Game companies have been threatened with suites in the past, hence most ban copyrighted names. Besides, most don't belong in a role playing environment.

Don't confuse copyrights with intellectual property. They can be related tho!

Sephiroths or Pikachus . . .
I just found my chars name.
This is good... if the rules are actually enforced. I'd like to see a RP server with an application process.
I doubt if there would ever be an application process. I will be nice to see if they enforce names with numbers in them or l variations in leet speak. I assume that as long those variations aren't violating copyright laws in a NON RP server they will fly (regrettable).
They will have to have people at the controls (i.e. live GMs at all times) to enforce the naming convention as well as the other issues. I've seen a lot of communications in OB that should have been at least a short period ban say a toss off the server and a locked account for an hour. (*Note: I have no idea how they are going to enforce rules and what penalties will be levied so the preceding is just speculation)
I'm still hoping for the RP-PvE server to be put up. Some heartful IT Mgr can make a last minute command to appeal to the PvE RP'rs amongst us and throw a bone, maybe.
Hey sounds great but i'm easy to please if i can go one day without seeing a sephirothu1298712 running around in game i'm a happy man!
BTW COH did a similar thing i've seen many people in my supergroup have been forced to change names of heroes must be something like at the end of the week they review new characters generated cause it seemd a delay. Like 2 days after the character was created they logged in and they were forced to choose a new name.
For being allegedly "Rules" there seems to be a whole lot of "please respect this / that".
Note to Funcom - if you have to include please it's a request not a rule.
Pretty empty promises TBH. A naming policy that is only slightly more stringent than on other servers - with no indication of how strongly enforced it will be (I'm willing to bet that it'll be renames based on number of complaints and nothing more), and what amounts to a reiteration of the standard "no harassment" language that'll be in the EULA anyway.
Not really worth the paper it's printed on as a set of RP server "rules".
