Which one should i get for those who have played the beta with either card.My settings 3800x2(@2.2) 2gigs of ddr400,120hd,also i play at 1280x1024.also windows xp 32 pro.
looks like the 8800GTS is a lot nicer, plus NewEgg has a nice 50$ rebate on a few select of them now
Realized that in this configuration is 2 8800GTS in SLI mode.. so I retract that statement. 8800gt in single card outperforms any other nVidia card besides the 9800 GX2
The 8800GT is the better card, compared to the GS. It's also currently the best bang for the bucks.
I play AoC with all of the settings maxed out with a 8800gt, core2duo 6400, 4gb ram on vista x64 at 1280x1024. It's smooth as silk.
edit: Get this one, it's overclocked and has been tested to be a rock solid best bang for the bucks in many reviews, got a nice 40$ mail in rebate too. Compared to other cards it has Ultra Durable 2 tech (which is a big plus), a smaller board and a zalman fan: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx
this game is gonna require heavily on the Fill Rate, so be sure to check on that as well... The 8800GT, after looking at my specs a little better, is gonna be the card to get, just over look the 9 series, unless you got the cash to afford the 9800 gx2 (76.8 billion textures fill rate /sec)
The game uses HUGE textures so when getting a graphics card, your deciding factor should be how much memory the card has. It was reported that outside you can use upwards of about 512mb of video memory on 1600 x 1200 res and up. The game is not programmed to take advantage of SLI as of right now either so don't bother doubling up on lower end cards. My suggestion is going with an 8800gtx with 768 mb of RAM or similar card. For more information on system performance check out this thread:
EVGA 8800GT Superclocked, Intel Q6600@2.7Ghz, 2GB DDR2@533Mhz. I run the game at max settings with 4xAA 4xAF and High Textures, no Bloom (sucks 7 frames) at 1920x1080.
I had zero crashes to desktop, a few disconnects to the login screen. No texture problems at all. Some stuttering here and there when loading textures.
i use the Onboard sound and NIC on an EVGA 680i Mainboard. 2xWD 500GB in Raid 0 for the games partition. Loading times are around 30 sec. on first load then maybe 10-20 on big areas, max 5 sec on death or zoning into houses.
I can only say that the 8800GT is an awesome card for the price, i never had any problems and i even run Crysis at 1920x1080 in medium with some things set to high. It does not get too hot and is very silent.
I can only say from experience that buying quality components like EVGA does pay off on stability and they come with a lifelong guarantee. I have friends with similar systems but 'no-name' cards that have always had problems. And what is funny but might be a coincidence is that all of them do not use the on board sound but a crappy "Creative Super Xtreme Elite Gamer Edition 16.5 High definition audio cards" *kidding* . I would not touch that crap with a ten foot pole.
Also most people go too far with the overclocking, the Q6600 can go to 3GHz easy but then it can start to give you random CTD or even BSoD and most blame the game.
Grab an 8800gtx 768 for $250 and you are eligible for the 120 day step-up to 9800gx2, which will basically end in July. By then the price will drop. Do a step-up before the 120 days and you basically get a 9800gx2 for around 300-350. This way you can enjoy the game while waiting for that price drop. It's what I'm doing.
Forget to mention.. it needs to be an EVGA to do their step-up feature. You also get life-time warranty that covers modding and overclocking.
^^ but wouldn't anything above a 8800gt create a bottleneck from my cpu 3800x2(@2.2).Also im at 1280x1024 so would it be better to just get a new monitor like 16x10.

Thanks BigMango, I've been close to pulling the trigger on an 8800GT from Newegg for a while and completely missed the rebate info. Reading comprehension ftl I suppose. Anyways thanks again for posting this bit of information, made my day.

Good advise, eVGA step up and lifetime is a premium. I would never consider anything else to be honest. Not to mention that the cards are rock solid in performance and low noise.

That should give you better insight to which card to get. Good luck.

Get the 8800GT superclocked: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130319
The gigabyte BigMango mentioned is great too.
Just my 2 cents.

Also do you guys think if i went from 1280x1024 to 1680x1050, would that lower the bottleneck from my cpu to my graphics card?

^^ man that has a big overclock.

@ 1280x1024 you wont see that much frame difference between the two (10 @ most) because both cards should work great
just a matter of money and future proof you should be thinking of
