My name is Natalia Coenen and I am a senior at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I am currently enrolled in a Communication Studies class entitled, "The Gaming Mind," and our final project is to do research on an aspect of online gaming. I have chosen to look into the phenomena of "cyberbullying," or online harassment. I have created a brief survey to help me gather data about this topic and would greatly appreciate any and all participation. Below is a link to the survey. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and participation in this research endeavor.

I took the survey. I hope it helps. Sorry, for going over the 150word limit and GL!, on the paper.
* Life is not black or white, it's shades of grey. But, at it's best/worst, it hints at 32bit color. -Me (a.k.a. RuthlessTimes)
* I do not need to know how to make a better game than you. I just need to know how to cancel my subscription. -Antarious(a slight misquote but the sentiment remains)
Is this going to become one of those "the game made me do it" kind of excuses people make when they dont even listen to what his own kid is saying?

Ends up a link I had to a great discussion on the WoW forums is no longer around. But on that forum, the subject was talking about grieving. I'll post an overview of the thing.
Basically someone in the PvP forums of WoW asked. "Is this grieving?"
The aggressor was a rogue who was max level (70). He killed a player who was level 50 with ease. He then followed the player around for the next 3 hours killing him at random times. When the victim thought it was safe the guy would gank him again a few times.....for 3 hours. Eventually the victim went into a capital city to craft where the aggressor couldn't reach him.
Finally, the aggressor logs onto an alt character on the victim's team. He then messages the victim a taunt about killing over and over for so long. The victim states he was going to report the guy. So the aggressor goes to the WoW forums to ask if what he did was grieving.
Nearly 80% of the comments on that forum called the aggressor an idiot with no life. The other 20% laughed and loved the idea.
I then enter the scene and post a statement that really turned things up. I said, "In my opinion, griefing is a form of sociapathy. Sociopaths have no remorse for their victims, whether it is in play or in murder. They do what they enjoy while harming / hindering others. Right now griefing is just something done in a game that sets back another player's progress. About 10 or 15 years in the future a lot more will be riding on an avatar's shoulders in the gaming world and griefers will be a serious issue to be dealt with. We already see article about people assaulting and murdering each other over activities in online games." In real life sports a griefer can only taunt the other players and make them a little agnry with bad sportsmanship. In the online world griefers hack, scam, steal, hinder, and sometimes even shutdown other players completely by corrupting data.
Examples of really bad griever games that I know of are Phantasy Star Online, Ultima Online, Diablo 2, Sword of the New World, and Star Craft.
After making that post on the forums, I got wide range of responses form people who agree with me and other people who said my idea was stupid because it was only a game.
Many people believe that sociopathy is something only in murdering and raping of real life, and that video games cannot have sociopaths. What do you guys on this forum think?
I have to agree completely. Video games without a doubt can bring out sociopathic behavior in people without them even realizing it. Saying "it's just a game" is a good example, since in most cases when people use this tired old excuse, they are really saying "you should stop crying, because I don't take you seriously." People grief others without ever feeling like the person on the other side is a real person. If anything, the unpredictable behavior makes the griefing more interesting, where an NPC would just blindly charge and be killed without effort. It's sad to see so many people attacking others openly without considering at all how they might be affecting that person (or even worse, considering it but simply not caring).
