Hello all,
I have recently been looking for a good MMORPG, and it will be my first. I've played MMORPGs before, but they were mostly betas and trials, though I do still play RuneScape. So, my question to you is, which MMORPG should I start with? I'm looking for something with a good, somewhat large player base, a learning curve that's not too steep, and perferably good graphics. I am very familiar with RPGs, thus it doesn't need to be 'RPG-newbie friendly' or anything of that sort, just something with a learning curve that isn't too steep.
I've been thinking about Final Fantasy XI, DAoC, and Guild Wars. Though I am not sure I want to wait till Feb. of 2005 for Guild Wars (I believe that's the correct date). Also, DAoC's graphics are somewhat dated IMO.
Anyhow, any suggestions would be greatly welcomed and appretiated,
FireBall

Maybe you should try City of Heroes, small learning curve.

Runescape is good, its free, no download, not browser based and fun. Lots of people palying all the time so you won't get bored.
www.runescape.com
For all those who think Runescape sucks, you obviously haven't given it a chance.

Do NOT play runescape.
Out of those 3, I'd say FFXI, it has a large player base, and very good game. But the only downside is that it takes a LONG time to level and you can't solo after level 15-20 (other than 1 class (beastmaster)).
But if you can wait, check out Dark and Light, it will be a pretty good and original MMORPG.

FFXI I would not consider it the game is to complex to level and the game is dynamics is hard to understand. Out of those 3 i would say DAOC why
DAOC-has been out the longest out of those 3 games
DAOC has best graphics and will have better graphics in catacomb expansion
DAOC-has a good mature community
drawback in DAOC is it takes forever to level like a year to get to level 50 and in order to solo you got to get a buff bot. If you are looking for a first mmorpg I would recondmend WWIIonline or City of Heroes both games have a excellent community and is easy to understand.

thank you all for the replies, I will probably look for City of heroes or Dark and Light, though I am still open to suggestions.
While I would prefer a Fantasy Based MMORPG, City of Heroes does look very good, and I will definiotely have to give it a try... Also, I've been looking at Saga of Ryzom, and it looks rather good thus far, any thoughts on it?
Thanks again,
FireBall
Runescape does suck, and yes I have given it a chance... to lvl 64... I'm not going back.
All right, I signed up for an account and am now downloading the beta client.. which is, I must say, huge (1 GB executable [install?]) Anyhow, do you knowif thee is any way to sign up for the beta test? Or when it is going into open beta? It says on the site I can sign up for the beat, but the link it gives is nonexistant..
Runescape could have been considered "average" IF they never changed to the HORRID 3d graphics which I don't consider 3d because of it's horribleness (I don't care if it's not a word).

I don't even consider RUnescape as mmorpg, its THAT crappy game. its just one another stupid online game, where tons of kids go play, and be l33t. 'cause its free. If you want to play GOOD REAL MMORPG, you have to p2p.
If you gonna play DaoC, be prepared to sacrifice lots of your free time for it. I've played it few years, and quitted half a year ago. Nowadays I play Neocron all the way.
City of heroes is just too simple to be a game . Atleats what I've heard, all you do is run missions, and missions and missions, beat monsters, is there even proper PvP in it ?
CoH and DAoC are good choices.
CoH leans more towards casual style of gameplay. So if you know you have only a couple of hours a week to spent playing go with CoH.
Well if you like anime I would recomend Ragnarok Online, you don't really have to grind much till level 83+
If you like fantasy-like games and intersted in clans, owning castles, being a ruler, going into sieges, flying in a dragon, then Lineage 2, but grind is pretty bad
If you like RO+Lineage then DAoC, graphics are pretty low but gameplay is nice
Final Fantasy XI is pretty fun for a while, but if you get bored of leveling then you can do some side quests and other stuff
City of Heros is fun for a short while, gets sorta......eh........after a week.......but pretty fun if you like superheros =P
If you want to wait out for a while for the other newer ones then try EQ2 or Pirates or WoW or my personal favorite which im expecting, Vanguard

Hm, all right, I'll have a lookg at Lineage 2 and Vanguard,
Thanks,

Just a quick note: Lineage 2 sucks.
