    Uh, Top 10 ?

I have actually played 2 so far ... lol.

Sorry, I know most MMOs only from the outside, i.e. I have studied their design, esp their class design. That would be my favorite list:

    1. D&D Online. Ok, forget about the MMO. The ruleset is not really made for the computer, even less for MMOs, and its still far from perfect as well, but its still one of the most interesting and complex roleplaying rulesets out there. The idea of multiclassing, and more importantly to be able to customize your class, is what I think is central for a fun roleplaying system.

    2. Guild Wars has a great design that allows for near infinite experiments. Sad the rest of the game is "super casual", and its not even a real MMO. Still, I love this system a lot. Thanks to sharp limits (characters can only have 8 abilities) and a large pool of possibilities (hundreds of abilities per class; one can have one subclass which allows limited access to that other class abilities as well), crafting your class is a real "deep" science.

    3. Vanguard has a quite static class design (cannot customize them too much). But you get 15 classes and a couple subclasses (3 for Monk and Shaman, 5 for Cleric). And the classes are all very complex and the fight system is very dynamic and interesting. With the Blood Mage they have a class I've never seen before, and the Monk and Disciple have a very interesting "Jin" concept (you gain Jin from various abilities which can then be consumed by other abilities).

    4. WoW isnt too bad, actually. Even if I dont like the concept of classes that can change their functionality completely. IMHO a class should trade you advantages for disadvantages. Esp the WoW Druid seems to be able to do ANY job (tanking, healing, or damage dealing).

    5. Lineage 2. Again an really awfully static system. But L2 had some really nice and unique concepts, and I still miss some of that stuff in other games. The fun I had on my Tyrant ! Yeah, awfully weak class alone. But once you had a good party, it was the killer !

    6. Everquest ... hard to say really, as I failed to get any substantial information about it from the net. Seems to be a challenging game, and you definitely need a group there.

    7. City of Heroes/Villains. Sounds like an interesting concept, though I havent yet managed to get substantial info about it. And personally, I would never want to play superheroes. Or villains.

    8. Dark Ages of Camelot. Repeatedly praised as being most balanced etc. But all information that I could find about it looked absolutely not impressing at all.

    9. EVE Online. I'm not really a fan of skillbased systems, and all I know about this MMO doesnt really help, to be honest.

    1) Ultima Online.... played it on and off since beta

    2) Anarchy Online .... poor start but classic is now free to play

    3) DAoC.... enjoyed it for 2 years till the expansions

    4) Guild Wars.... a very good "drop back game " when you get burned out on your main MMORPG

5)EQ2... played for about a year till Guild died

    6) WoW..... got tired of end game and waiting for groups

    7) City of Heros.... fun at begining but lost interest half way

8)Earth and Beyond... now dead, played till the last great battle

9)Ryzom..... good game but poor support... now dead I think

10)RF Online or Archlord both free to play, both with problems but fun.

    11) just seen my old box of SWG.... great fun at launch,

Ok I know its 11 but could not leave off SWG :)

    FFXI

    World of warcraft

Phantasy Star Universe - Not an mmorpg, Online Action game

Phantasy star online BB - Not an mmorpg, Online Action game

    Cabal online

Hellgate London - Not an mmorpg, Online Action game

Guild Wars - I wouldn't consider this a full blown mmorpg, More like a Strategy online Action game.

Monster Hunter - Not an mmorpg Online action game

    Dungeon Runners

I only have 9 mmorpg's I like Even though I have played about 25 of them. Most are mindless boring lame Korean Grind fest games with like no story what so ever just Kill kill kill...  soooo I can't really pick a 10th.

The reason i like Multi player online action games is because they are much simpler, and quicker to level, Usually very casual and the elitist community that mmorpgs usually build up is not there, especially in Guild wars where every one has the best (Stats) gear in the game. Maybe not looks but all stats are around the same.

I really don't like these list threads, it just reminds me how many people haven't played asheron's call and knowing that if they played it when it came out it would be #1 on their list as well

    #1  Asheron's Call

I've tried over 10 mmo's but disliked most of them from the start, so can't really do a top 10. so heres mmo's i;ve been adicted to by duration.

    1. runescape (before full loot FFA pvp removed)

    2. guildwars

    3. WoW (for a couple of weeks)

    4. age of conan (for a weekend)

    My blog: image

  • severiusseverius Member UncommonPosts: 1,516

Played a great many mmo's in my time as a gamer.  Most of them wouldn't make my top 100 games list but for a top 10 mmo list, that is rather difficult.  Most mmo's are pure crap, sorry to say it and I know I will get flamed to hell and back for it lol.  Anyhow my top mmo list:

    1. Ultima Online - Pre-Trammel

-----Not my first mmo however it is the one that set the bar as far as I am concerned.

    2.  Star Wars Galaxies - Pre-Hologrind

-----Before everyone was chasing the moronic blue boxes there was a thriving community.  There were known individuals across all servers for entertainment, Trade Skills, PVP, RP, everything.  It was the ONLY game ever released that brought the hardcore pvp crowd, the hardcore rp crowd, the carebears, and the casual gamer into 1 game where everyone was able to get along with one another and enjoy playing in a virtual Star Wars Universe.

    3.  Lord of the Rings Online

-----I no longer play this because I am more a fan of the novels by JRR Tolkien then I am of the mmo genre and Turbine is taking a rock solid game and starting to damage the IP that they have a hold of.  All in the name of gaining more subscribers however, I think that they will drive more away.

    4.  World Of Warcraft

-----Blizzard took the pve content of EQ, and the many different clones, and refined it.  The game is accessible and has opened up the genre to a great number of people that wouldn't have played otherwise.

    5.  Neverwinter Nights on AOL

-----My very first MMO.  It used the HIGHLY successful Gold Box series platform developed by SSI and turned it into a successful albeit very expensive ($3 and change an hour or something like that) mmorpg.

8- Acheron's call ( loved the montly content and unique world , Skill point system FTW also .

9- Age of conan ( low in list because only did beta weekend but i found it nice and will probaly give it spin because i love aoc brutal world and with a great story.

Top 10... humm thats a pretty high number to think of considering after #3 they are just mmos you liked the concept of probably but didn't really enjoy the game... Anyway my 10 would be...

    #1: Ultima Online (years... lots)
#2: Dark Age of Camelot (2 years)
    #3: Shadowbane (6 months)
#4: World of Warcraft (3 months)
    #5: Lineage II (1 month)
    #6: EvE Online (1 month)
#7: Star Wars Galaxies (1 month)
    #8: Guild Wars (beta)
    #9: Asheron's Call (beta)
    #10: Everquest (beta)

As I guessed with me anyway after about #3 they are not really my top 10, I have a top 3, the other 7 i played yes but i didn't like them really just concepts from them, so they really shouldn't be there...

"Sticking with what works doesn't make good games, it remakes them, I quit playing that a while ago.
