MMO/PC Games:

  • 1. World of Warcraft
  • 2. RuneScape
  • 3. Lord of the Rings Online
  • 4. Final Fantasy XI
  • 5. City of Heroes

Only the top 5 available so far as far as I can see, I'd love to see their findings in full though.

...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.

From reading the article it appears that this is focused primarily on the US, am I right?

If so, then it's quite telling that even City of Heroes has more subscribers than any single SOE game.  How is it that Smedley and others continually refer to SOE as a leader in the industry?  I mean hell, it's been at least a year since I last logged into City of Heroes/Villains and even then it seemed like the game was vacant on the Justice server.

Its a safe bet $OE and its titles will be at or off the bottom of the last page.

Eventually, Kaz will figure out that SOE sucks because of it's utterly incompetent management, and he'll do something about it.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Well this should finally put to rest the idea that SOE is a "market leader" in the mmo industry. lol...they can't even get one of their games into the top five.

    Good game, Smed.

I've played WoW and currently play CoH.  I think both of these are simply fun and work well.  My kids have played runescape, and loved it, but now play CoH also.  I've heard great things about runescape from them though.  They had a ball.

Smed keeps searching around for the magic marketting format or target group to get the big bucks.  Just make the damn games work, make them fun and stop lying to people.  Can't see the forest for the trees that guy.

No big suprises there. I wonder if SOE would have made the top 5 list with all their subs. combined?

And then we'd have to wonder if those "active" subscribers were even aware that their accounts had been "activated."  A number of people have reported finding their accounts active or pending even though they haven't played an SOE game in months.  Does anyone ever audit SOE?  Man, if I pulled half the stuff these guys seem to get away with, I'd have been searching for a new career long ago.

Situation in Apr 2008 on actual paid MMO's (no GW free o play MMO's).
LOTRO on line dropped from 1.2% in Feb to 0.9% in April
Your list is far from correct in that they "forgot" the Korean Lineage series (I and II).
The biggest just keeps getting bigger.

Actually NPD based their research on hard market data (like published revenues), while MMOGCHART is using speculative "insider" info. So the NPD findings are more reliable.
